Bulk cooking for working mums

Hi there,

I am a full time working mum who believes homemade cooking being the healthiest and sometimes the cheapest option for my family. However, I feel that cooking daily after work is depriving me from spending quality time with my family. I was surfing the net and found "bulk cooking groups", mainly in U.S who basically gather once a month and cook together a full month supply for their families to freeze.
I know what works in some countries might not work in others but do you think it could be a thought worth trying?

Thank you,

I am not working presently but I'd suggest cooking and freezing meals on a weekly basis. If you start with a menu for the week, you could probably be able to use one "meat" product in two different ways; eg make a big batch of mince and use it for lasagna and shepherd's pie. The potatoes you boil for the shepherd's pie can be doubled and used for croquettes etc. When I go away in the summer and DH is not able to join us, I usually cook 50-60 individual portions of meals and freeze so all he has to do is thaw and heat. It takes me a good 4-5 days in the kitchen but worth the effort as all DH can barely manage to make is rice.

I once belonged to a close group of friends who doubled up on their meals, packaged one for sharing and then traded once or twice a week. Saves everyone from a night or two of cooking and also brings new things into the home. Sometimes causes interesting discussions at the dinner table. Examples include but not limited to; children dislike something, Husbands prefer a dish another lady's way, someone uses too much salt or not enough...blah, blah. But, makes for an opportunity to giggle at times. Also dessert trading and sharing. Just an idea for some of you ladies who are well acquainted. I love this idea! Just like come and dine with me, but without the fuss of arranging a dinner party lol

I would highly recommend trying dinnertime.me! We have been using this service for the last month or so and the WHOLE family love it. I dished up a curry last night and the quote from my 6yo who is usually not fussed about food: "Wow, this is what you call super delicious"! DH and I almost fainted in shock :) Basically they deliver a box of ingredients together with the recipes for 4 meals for a family of 4 and you cook! Takes the pain out of shopping and more importantly (for me at least) deciding what to cook.

Not a mom, myself, but since I have been busy working at night, I've gravitated toward fish and veggies for dinner. I'll share my super quick and easy routine. I heat up the oven when I walk in the door, then unload my things, greet DH, change into something comfy, etc. When the oven beeps that it's preheated, I turn the cooktop on and heat olive oil in a pan. Then I wash some vegetables and take fish out of fridge. Set veggies to dry, and baste fish fillet with some kind of sauce (as of late, my favorite is chili paste whisked with a little lemon juice, some sugar free raspberry preserves and a dash of soy sauce). On the heated pan, it goes, to sizzle and seal in taste, while I put veggies go on the steamer. Return to fetch the fish fillet off the frying pan, and toss onto an oiled pyrex dish and placed in oven. I turn the oven heat off as soon as it's in. Within 5 minutes, fish and veggies are done. I Of course if there aren't fish fans in your house, this won't work :) I like Marroosh's idea, too. I cook chicken and steak 2X a week and store in fridge, to dish into fresh rice I steam daily, and play with the spices, pastes, and veggies. But dinner I like fresh :)

I am a bit sceptical of bulk cooking just from the hygiene point of view. However, I'm a great fan of cooking in bulk at home and freezing portions. Check this blog out for freezer cooking for slow cooker meals. http://melissafallistestkitchen.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/freezer-cooking-slow-cooker-meals.html

I am single too but I also like to cook for the week ahead. I have my hot meal at lunch time so I don't cook in the evening. So once a week I cook and freeze different meals. For example, I like mix beans with potato and tomato sauce, but spicy. It's vegetarian, but if you Split it up, add chicken or beef to half of it you have either a nice chilli or burrito filling. Just put on a tortilla or Arabic bread and add cheese. Also, you can get a mix of capsicum, courgette, broccoli and chicken . Split up and add a nice Thai Red curry with rice. Other part, add just grilled potato or sweet potato and you have a fajitas. This means you have hot meals for 4 days and you don't have to buy loads of ingredients. The good old lasagne or any oven dish really is easy to do. :Leave you space on the stove to make other meals. I spend 1 afternoon or evening cooking and them I'm done:)

Not sure how it would work as you would have pork/allergy/issues etc, also how do you all fit in the same kitchen or have enough pots?!. OP you should invest in a slow cooker (bung it all in the morning and come home and it is ready) or just do some cooking at the weekend, if you do 2 or 3 things at the weekend and freeze up portions of it (i.e. with rice etc for a meal) then it's just a case of bunging it in micro when you come home. Or be done with it and get a maid! :-p

It is worth trying! I'm single but even I find it frustrating to cook everyday so I end up ordering all the time, but then it's not easy on the wallet, and on my preferred diet. I looked online a couple of weeks ago and saw many groups in the US. They call it investment cooking or freezer cooking. When I searched any here in UAE, found none.
