My gardener had an accident on his bicycle, and broke his wrist. They went to Rashid hospital, but his boss was ony prepared to pay 200dhs for visit/xray. He is not prepared to pay for plaster. So my gardner's friend, has tried his best to use a piece of flat wood, and news paper to immobilize it. The bandage is made out of teatowel.

I gave him a message to have his boss call me. I am worried aboutt complaining because I do not want his gardener to lose his job, but at the same time, this guy is 19 yrs old, and if this arm does not heal properly, it could giuve him grief for years to come. He wil lonly ever get a job diung manual labour, so this is important.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get his boss to do the right thing without the gardener's job being compromised??

To be really honest, perhaps it's best if you run him to hospital and get some new x-rays done.

I agree, well done SuzyDuzy. Unfortunately I don't think the bosses words ring true. If your gardener was meant to resting then what was he doing at work? And even if it is 'just' a sprain, why has his boss not provided a bandage or wrist guard? He shouldn't have to make do with a homemade splint. Anyway, you've done as much as you can and at least the boss is now aware that clients are watching and concerned for the welfare of their gardeners, hopefully it will make him treat them better even if it's only to avoid upsetting clients.

Suzy I came back to this to apologise for being the vinegar that was missing from the gardeners bandage. I could have said things in a much better way but I didnt and there is no excuse and Im very sorry. I currently have my boy with a badly broken arm that has needed 2 surgeries, being re broken, grafted and plated -moving his fingers has never veen a problem - even in the recovery room.

Yesterday, the gardener did move his fingers....???? I fractured my arm when i was 7 and didn't realise for two weeks until i collapsed in an handstand so wiggling fingers is not really a sure sign :) I had fallen and removed half the skin off my knees so all my pain focus had been there.

I have just read parts of this thread but wanted to say SuzyDuzy that you have a big heart, well done - so many of us comment but don't act. I just hope he doesn't try riding his bike for a while. edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/05/2013

So Bossman just came.... he actually was very nice. I was VERY careful about being judgemental and said quite simply that I was concerend about his gardener's arm, but didn't really understand exactly what was wrong with it because of the English problem. He said that it was not broken, and the doctor said he needed to rest, no work, but it should get better quite quickly - so sounds more like a sprain. I asked which doctor, and he said they took him to Rashid the same day, did an x-ray - but no break. I kind of insisted, asking a few times about the x-ray and him not having a break.... but he insisted that it was not broken. Yesterday, the gardener did move his fingers....???? Bossman also told me that this gardener was the nephew of HIS boss, so 'no problem'... I am not entirely convinced, but this man appeared to be genuine, so I am going to hope and pray that he was. So I will go out and buythe gardener a wrist guard which has a metal piece and to immobilse it, and the velcro for strapping and hope that if indeed, it truly is broken, then at least this will be better than nothing. Worst case, if it is a bad sprain, then this will also help.

Did he ask you for help? Does he know that you have addressed this to his boss? He didn't ask me for help.... I am the one pushing and asking questions because it is just not right. He is young, innocent, probaby does not know his rights. His gardener friends are all talking about it and saying that the big boss man doesn't care, but this one I am waiting for might. I gave my number to give to 'small' boss man and the gardener was quite OK about it. In that case, unless you are prepared to take on the costs yourself, I think you should stay out of it. Wouldn't you be furious if someone went above you with the intention of helping and instead caused your dismissal? This could totally backfire and you would be to blame. If you truly want to help, just give him the money or take on other poster's offer to help...getting his manager involved without him knowing is really unfair. This is exactly my biggest fear.... the other gardeners are quite happy for me to speak with the boss, and he himself seemed quite ok with it - he was going to give me the number yesterday when I asked. I am prepared to pay..... He has arrived..... Good. Its good of you to say you will fund this if you have to, and if you do have to, it really only will be the upfront payment. edited by DesertRose1958 on 02/05/2013

Hi Ladies - wow thank you to those ladies who have offered to help. 1. My friend advised against me taking him personally for liability reasons. You know sometimes you try and help someone and it could back fire....I tend to agree with her. Does he has visa, should have heatlh card (but doesn't) etc...could create problems. Do they think I sponsor him then... 2. Her gardener works for the same company as mine, and we have now organised for the boss man to come to my villa to speak to me. He is on his way now.... 3. I am very concerned about his losing his job if I raise too much of a fuss. Their English is not fab, so not so easy. I am continuing however, to try and get some results. If Rashid is indeed free, and the Bossman will not take him there, then I will give him the money for the taxi. Apparently he did go to a clinic, and they already paid dhs200 - so they did not want to put out the money to pay for the rest.... anyway, I am waiting for him to come to my viila now. It is my birthday today, and this is something I really want to see fixed today....would be a great gift! Good on you for acting on this. You could also drive him to the ER and drop him there? No need for you to go in? Yes, or it could just be seen through from beginning to end. Then perhaps the gardener would think it was his birthday. He may even go as far as to think all his birthdays have come at once - having another human being care for him and get him the help he needs without any thought of what may happen to me if ......... edited by DesertRose1958 on 02/05/2013 Suzy I came back to this to apologise for being the vinegar that was missing from the gardeners bandage. Hi, all treatment at Rashid as an outpatient at emergency is free. That includes putting a plaster on. My son broke his arm and we went there to get treated. HE was x rayed, diagnosed, the bones were manually realigned and then a plaster was put on. He then went for another xray to check that the bones were back in the correct place. This was all done free of charge. Unfortunately he then needed surgery which we did have to pay for! I am not sure why your gardener thought that therre would be a charge for this. This information is very valuable - thank you (sorry that he needed surgery)...

Send him to belhoul hospital. I will get my sister to bandage it. She did her residency in ortho so would know how. AND she will not charge him......though I wonder why you dont just take him to Iranian hosp or some place close yourself, its faster, more humane and you wont get him into trouble. He does after all work for you indirectly. I had asked a friend of mine if I should take him to the hospital and she said not to - could get complicated... she suggested we pay for a taxi to get him there. I am hesitant to send him in a taxi because will he use that money wisely? He does seem to have his head on his shoulders, but I don't know him all that well as he has only been working for me for about 5 weeks - he took over my normal gardner's position while he went on vacation. His English is poor, so I am not sure he understands everything I say. I printed a picture of a plaster for a broken wrist and told his boss to call me. I'll see what happens tomorrow and take it from there. He does not have a health card.... SD, This is just so sad. Although im not sure why ur friend has advised against taking him to hospital. In any case please do update us if Rashid Hospital worked out. Incase you will be collecting money for treatment please let me know as I wud like to contribute something too. edited by mks on 02/05/2013

The mentality some people have, including probably the gardener's boss is: "they had it much worse back home". So you are supposed to believe its ok to mistreat people like this just because its better than home and its illogical to compare with people like us.

WOW can some not read, this is terrible SD. Does anyone have anything helpful to say about the labour law here? What does the law say about treatment for an employee, anyone know? Is there anone this poster can call to get the employer to take his man to hospital and pay for his treatment? I'm sure the OP will pay for a taxi but will the treatment be free at Rashid or does this gardener have to have a labour card? Will the employer be liable or the employee? Poor chap, this is terrible stuff.
