We are moving to a new place after living in the present home for two years. However our landlord says that we have to have the whole house repainted, fill in the nails we used to hang pictures, ensure all bulbs are working etc. He is asking the same of anyone who is leaving the building. I want to know if this is the done thing in Doha?

Go to the rental commission and ask them what the leaving procedure is (take your lease with you). If they say you are in the right - file a complaint. Otherwise, you're on the hook I would say.

It just says in our contract that we have to return the house in the condition in which it was occupied (does not specifically state any of what he is demanding). This was a new building two years ago. I think he is taking undue advantage of holding the deposit cheque because the apartment is in good condition and even the wear and tear of paint is only in areas where we have put furniture. And to think that he has never maintained the building and our basement parking spot has been blocked by a water tank requiring repair since November. I guess we will have to go with what he is saying because we want the deposit cheque back. Thanks for taking the time to reply ladies.

We're also in our 3rd villa & we've never been told to repaint. We do fill in the holes & leave the place neat, but as GinaM says, the places that you move into are nearly always completely minging & take ages to clean. Unfortunately the landlord probably still has your deposit cheque, so the ball is always in his court :\:

We're onto our 3rd villa in Doha and haven't painted one of the ones that we've left (in fact we've basically just walked out...they've always been filthy - other than the current one - when we moved in so have always said "we're leaving it in a better condition than we found it"). It is a pretty standard thing around the world that the landlord is responsible for things like the painting of property. Perhaps the holes in the wall they could get away with asking you to repair but if its not in your lease then I dont' think they have a leg to stand on re the painting.
