If you get a copy of the Explorer Guide - Qatar Live Work Explore, there is a map in the back. Doha does change rapidly though. We purchased one before our move, and found it informative. You may be able to get one at Waterstones, if not, Amazon.

mmm, Tamieg1 - good point.......that's a problem. At the moment, we don't have school places, and from what things are looking like, we might not have places even once we move there, it might be home - tutoring for a while. (I am a qualified teacher, so that's not soo much of a problem) but... All the school places I have enquired about are full and with waiting lists, so we are applying anyway, I am also applying because it would make sense that if the girls are going to a school where there is a secondary and primary on the same campus, I may as well be teaching in the same place if possible....here, I drop them with my mum, so that I can get to school early, but over there, that won't be an option.... Geez, this is all so complicated....in the meantime, having exhausted the school research I thought I'd turn my attention to more exciting things like looking at houses! But thanks for the tip... I need a big map so I can plot all the residential areas and all the schools and try to work my way around! It is logistically a nightmare though! I need school place, accomodation and a job offer for me to land on our doorstep on the same day! They're all so inter-dependent...

oh yes, tamieg1 is totally right. we actually chose riviera gardens because the work/school/home triangle was perfect. DD went to the kindergarten, and now will be going to ACS which is about a 5 minute drive from the compound. its just a bonus that the compound is very nice too :-)

You might want to consider schools before accommodation - for example if your daughters end up at Parkhouse, you won't want to be doing a school run from the other end of town (where Riviera Gardens is)

Ah, thanks Kitsune, it's just so hard trying to imagine what these places are really like, all the photos online look great (well, nearly all of them) but you can't really tell what a place is like just by the photos. I like the idea of green, from what I've seen, there's a lot of tightly packed housing and concrete from road - pavement - walls of the house with nothing growing insight! I live in a market town in very green countryside in the UK so that is something I will miss.... (mind you, I won't miss the weather, 15 degrees and it's been raining non stop for 3 weeks! summer in England! I'm considering turning the heating back on!) Really appreciate your insight, thanks, I'll check it out. :)

i live in riviera gardens and love it alot. it has an indoor swimming pool (and a massive outside one too), wich means you can swim all year round. if you have kids, thats a bonus. especially when we cant be bothered to leave the compound for something to do on a weekend. it has a shop, and a really really good hairdressers. plus more than one little kids parks scatttered around on different street corners. it also has a kindergarten. and its green (for doha) all the front gardens have proper trees in. the houses are set further back from the road than in other copmpunds and the majority of the houses are single level, so it feels more open and like a neighborhood than other places. but, its doesnt have a tennis court. or a resturant or cafe (i know some other places do). but as that suits me, im not bothered. good luck in your search :-)

With 2 daughters, aged 14 and 8 - A budget of 20,000QR a month Knowing nothing about 'nice' areas, busy roads or undesirable neighbors (with the exception of the fact that every-one wants to live in West Bay Lagoon - and we'd be lucky on our budget to be able to find somewhere) I have been searching on the internet, but without actually being there, it seems impossible to choose... My DH will be there in September, we probably won't arrive until Jan 2013, but I'd like to narrow down the search and get some idea of where we might be moving to.... I'd really like to hear from people who already live in Doha and get some recommendations on where the nicest villas are.... Any advice, good or bad, gratefully received!
