Can I also make a suggestion? If these are stray cats then you can call Feline Friends Qatar (I think called Cats in Qatar here run by a lady called Kathy Bowen) they run a neuter scheme whereby they neuter the cats and re-release (once kittens big enough) then at least its keeping the population down. When the kittens are more than 4 months they can also be neutered and hopefully they no turf wars will start as well.....just a suggestion to more poor cats living on the street and trying to find somewhere safe to give birth!

you can squirt the toms with plain water in a water pistol, harmless and they'll hate it.

please don't spray pure or even 50:50 vinegar [b'>on/at[/b'> a cat, although not poisonous to eat it is an [b'>ACID[/b'> and could seriously burn/damage their eyes and hurt their noses if it came into contact (spray it in your own eyes if you don't believe me). Spraying it on your doorstep or where they have pee'd is fine, it evaporates quickly and has the added bonus of deterring ants and other creepy crawlies too.

yes, it needs to be about 50/50 vinegar and water. also, it takes a while to work. within a week or so of spraying every day we only had 2 persistent toms. and those little beggers i sprayed sometimes 4 times a day if i could catch them. and that took a couple of weeks. but now, like i said, i only spray very occassionally, i think every 3 weeks or something, and they all stay away. good luck!

Jill did you use straight vinegar or diluted? I tried it as well (5 new furry friends at the moment!) but I think I might have made it too weak. On a separate note I've definitely seen mothballs in the past week, think it was at Lulu Gharrafa in the cleaning aisle.

Well we tried the vinegar trick and last night and for once there was no meowing at the door. But in the morning a new cat was sitting on top of the car! edited by JillMV on 24/07/2012

I was talking about this thread with some girlfriends at lunch, and another idea is - Moth Balls - apparently cats hate them! So you could stick some in the garden... Not quite sure where you would get them in Doha though!! Ha Ha!

water pistol (just water in it not vinegar) to spray the cats. Get the anti-cat spikes from Daiso, they are plastic mats that are not comfortable for the cats to lie on and will keep them out of the garden and pot plants, they can also be used to keep birds off windowsills. I do like the idea of Ausgirls sign, you'd need to get a bilingual cat to write it out for you though. ;)

It defintely works if you spray with vinegar and water - use a water pistol for accuracy.......it doesn't hurt them just scares them away!!! I like cats but I don't like it when they use my garden as a toilet. I have kids and it is no fun when they want to play outside and the cats have been....

How about a sign saying 'Cats welcome here, lots of kids to play with'. They are very contrary and probably won't want to come then. :):) I used to use citronella to keep our puppy away from chairs that looked like they needed chewing.

also, if you have toms that have sprayed and you can see where they have done it, applying the vinegar/water directly over the mark also helps, as it 'erases' their territory. sort of, if you see what i mean. it took a little while, but now i only spray every couple of weeks, they keep away the rest of the time. we used to call it cat wars in our house!

.....*goes off to make up a vinegar spray bottle*....... Thanks for the tip Kitsune :-) Will spray round the driveway as well to see if that stops the blighters climbing all over car and scratching paintwork.

Those sound easy snd worth trying! The cats definitely never come to the back garden where the dogs hang out! The front area isn't enclosed though, so the dogs can't roam free there. edited by JillMV on 23/07/2012

I had unwelcome cats in my garden and read up on 'natural' deterrents, citrus peel & eucalyptus oil (&i think black pepper) were listed as things cats don't like. I haven't had one in garden for a while, not sure if these have worked or whether me 'enthusiastically' shoo'ing them away any time I see them has meant they have got he message??!! If the dog was in the garden I assume (?) cats wouldn't come in or would run away.....

We have a very small patch of garden in front of the house. Apparently there's something very attractive about it to cats because in the last three months two different mamas have decided to birth and raise their kittens there. I was so happy when the first group moved elsewhere- but then they were replaced with second family! Although the kitties are really cute, they're driving my dogs insane because they're just outside the door meowing--- which then gets the dogs barking- and in turn sometimes wakes the baby. Does anyone know of a good humane way to discourage these cats from making a home at our front door? Any herbs that I can sprinkle on the soil or something? Have the dogs go to the bathroom there?
