Thanks for that. I don't send money back but I will warn my housemaid who does it regularly. I can't say I am surprised. I have been asked for the wrong amount in Starbucks twice. The only reason I know what the exact price should be is because I always order the same thing!
I regularly send money overseas. I use the money exchange counters to do this. Normally when I send money, I use large notes. So if sending 1000QR, I use two x QR500 notes (not intentionally, just how its worked out). All good so far.
A few months ago, I went to send money, but this time the amount was made up of various denominations. So, filled out form, handed over cash, he put it in the counting machine, filled out forms, tapped away on his computer then handed over the slip for me to sign. When I looked at the slip, it was 50QR short than the amount I wanted to send. So I queried it, assuming it was the sending charge, which I had wanted to pay separately as I wanted the full amount to be received. But the counter guys said no, that was the amount of money I handed to him. So I said, no, that’s not right, I know I gave you QR1000. He said no you didn’t. I was a bit stumped. I mean, its my word against his. There are no cameras in the booths (like there are at carrefour for example over the tills) and he was so sure, I thought cripes, maybe I really did miscount. So I put it down to lesson learnt, really must count properly next time etc.
Anyway, fast forward to yesterday, and my maid went to send some money, so I asked her to send some for me too (maids honesty is not in question here at all). She calls me an hour later, in a panic, because guess what? She handed over the full amount having counted it herself beforehand, and having written it all down (she is more organized than me) and the same thing happens. The counter guy denies that she gave him the correct amount and that she must have dropped it or miscounted. She argues with him for a bit, but like when it happened to me, its her word against his and she eventually has to move aside for the next customer.
Moral of the story? When you go to the money exchange, count out the notes aloud, one at a time to the counter guy so he cant pretend he got a different amount. Also, try to stick to large denominations, so its easy to see if one goes missing.
