Hi Ladies,

Just an fyi, I bought some Greek salad from Carrefour yesterday evening and came home to discover a dead fly inside. Please be vigilant and careful when eating anything from outside, this makes me nervous as when I went back to show the manager he said 'this is very common'.

In 14 years of living here I have never had bad meat purchased from C4, Lulu, MegaMart or others. Personally I find FFC (Family Food Center) meat good and reasonably priced, but they don't always have a great selection. Used to be FFC for meat, C4 for basics, Mega Mart for stuff from home (junk mostly). Lulu seems to have a pretty good well-rounded selection of most things these days.

The heat is one reason why I take a cool box with several ice packs with me in the hotter months when I go grocery shopping. Not least, I hate soupy icecream, let alone meat possibly turning on the way home. I still buy frozen chicken and fish at Carrefour - mostly because I can't see these items being any different from any other shop in terms of the odds of thawing refreezing etc. Definitely "inspect" your meat, poultry and fish purchases carefully = if you even suspect they are off, bin them. At least the bin cats will get some good out of them.

We have never had issues with meat purchased at C4 but have had issues with meat purchased at Lulu. However, I will not go as far as to say the store was at fault, as with the extreme heat we have at times here it could possibly be that the time between taking it from the cooled section at the store and transporting it to the fridge at home was too much for the meat. One thing I have learned here is to never eat meat that someone else has prepared unless I know that they have similar standards to mine. There are so many ladies that I work with who have come from other regions of the world (Ghana, Nigeria, some places in Africa, etc) that seem to think that it's completely okay for meat to be at room temperature for extended periods of time before and after cooking. This goes against everything I have ever learned about safe food handling, and has led me to believe that my "westernized stomach" simply can't handle other people's food standards.

I bought mince from C4 after which my whole family was sick (throwing up, stomach upset); this was around two years ago. Never bought there again. It was around the same time when C4 was having problems with the meat section. I buy all meat/fish at Lulu Gharaffa and never had any problems.

I also buy from C4 as they offer low fat ground beef. I always make sure cooked well and have never had problems. Having said that I buy all my other meat and chicken from Lulu in Garaffa.

Cal_Hob don't throw it out unless you have a reason to suspect (see or smell) that it's gone bad. Like kimmc3 I've been buying mince at C4 for years -- never had a problem. edited by RachelA on 31/01/2013

I've been buying Aus or NZ minced beef and lamb chops from C4 for the past four years and I've never had any problem with it so far. The fish however, has often been old/borderline 'off'. I think the meat at MegaMart is quite good, but it's really pricey.

2x! try at least half a dozen at each outlet not counting the times the fish counters or the vegetable stands have been shut down at any c4 outlet by the MoH in the past 5 years. I would not buy minced anything anywhere including my home country - I mince it myself so I control what and the quality of the product.

I bought some minced beef at C4 a while ago - when I used it the next day it was clearly rancid. I took it back to show the manager of the butchers' section and he couldn't have been less interested. To my knowledge c4 have had their meat section shut down twice for unhygenic standards, so your story does not surprise me. Sloppy practice and disinterest in customers is a recipe for disaster. I don't buy meat or deli produce from C4 for this reason.
