Sugarbeach, nice idea, but very expensive no? Mind you, with the salaries some of these maids are getting as it is. Had one round today earning 2,600 (salary of 2000 plus various allowances including for being on the PAlm with no transport). Liked her a lot but don't think we can afford her.

I don't think flexibility is a big ask at all, the majority of people I know (myself included) require flexibility so it can't be an unusual job requirement. Maybe you struck it unlucky with your recent maid. You just need to be very clear from the outset that it's your way or the highway - in a nice way of course :) Good luck!

You might want to consider the option of having a full time paid sponsored by explorer/howdra, saves a lot of the aggro.

Desert Rose - yes that is one thing I am checking on/stressing at interview, that I want the maid back to sleep in her room at night. Regarding hours and flexibility, our contract (the standard one from immigration) just says hours/duties as agreed. I think we should add something to say flexible hours as required. There must be maids out there that don't need or want rigidity and are happy to go with the flow and finish earlier or later depending on circumstances. The one I've interviewed already has been flexible with hours according to her current employer, and one I'm seeing later sounded very willing on the phone. There seems to be an excess of supply at the moment, with many families wanting to,wait till September to recruit, so maids will have to be flexible.

KH there seem to be lots of maids with employers returning home at the moment, so might be a good time to pick up someone who is recommended. If it gets to the autumn then I think I may try an agency as you suggest and for the reasons you mention. Hopefully then we may get a year or two without demands!

Thanks ladies. Starting interviewing again this afternoon! Love having a spotless house, so going to brave it again, this time with a bit of wisdom behind me. I've learnt so much about maids recently, so fingers crossed things work out next time. You might have better luck by getting someone through an agency who is new to Dubai, rather than someone who has been here for a while and has a list of demands as long as her arm. You can still do interviews over Skype or the phone, and agencies like Howdra/ explorer can offer face to face interviews once the candidates have arrived.

Its what I would only ever agree to. And how will you manage to word the contract so you have room for maneuver in it? You always need room for maneuver given how some of these women would appear to be Philadelphia lawyers.

Yes, all done and dusted. And after all the doubts, questions and nerves it all went very well. She went and packed thinking she was going to her sisters, ie being released by us to find another job. Part of the way down SZR she worked out where we were going and said we should have told her as she wouldn't have run away! But we didn't know that did we?! As it turned out she said she was relieved to be going home and really seemed quite happy. We definitely did the right thing. She asked me why we'd chosen that route and I explained about us being responsible for her until she leaves the country or finds another sponsor, and she accepted that. So we are happy not to be worrying about what she is up to in DUbai that we may be held accountable for, and she is happy back home - a positive end to the story. Whether or not she will have learned not to be rude and demanding with her employer is another matter though! She may not get the chance to demonstrate as none of her three employers will be providing references for her. Now to find another maid and be VERY clear, in writing, right from interview what is required, and not agree later to any deviation from that agreement. Thanks so much for all your words of wisdom ladies, and apologies that it all became a bit tedious!

We've had a maid go ballistic. Very unpleasant, terrifyingly violent in fact. People should take all the steps they can to protect themselves, their families and their home.

Yes immigration will look after her if you're early. Does this mean she doesn't know she is going and you are planning on telling her when she's about to leave for her sisters house? If so it might be better if you could send her on an errand (perhaps to the shop?) then pack for her whilst she's out, put the suitcase in the car, then when she gets back from the errand just say you're all going out and tell her she's going just as you pull up to the airport. wow... do people really do this ?? Pikachu, some of the maids are so very desperate and they know that once they return home that it will be near to impossible to get back to the UAE. They will accuse their sponsors of many kinds of things, anything at all....just not to get on that plane. You would think that they would have thought about this when they had a good job, but unfortunately plenty of sponsors allow them to get away with bad behavior and they do not believe that they will really be sent home. There are plenty of maids out there looking for work because the sponsors will not cancel their visas, as they want to treat them like human beings. Unsuspecting expats will hire them and the circle continues.

Oopsiedaisy - and do you honestly believe that a maid is allowed to get away with, lying through her back teeth in accusing the family of absolute falsities including mistreatment, abuse and therefore, through no fault of their own, the husband is usually being hauled before the police and judges in a court? All because we have the right to return her to her country of origin through their lies and deceit? When will people realise that maids are beginning to know their so called rights if they abuse, in any shape form or manner, their employers loyalty and trust - and mostly, because they do not get want they ultimately want! edited by Alaingirl on 24/05/2013

To add- when I had to have the maid leave after the contract finished I was told so many different stories from her- the aunts in Abu Dabi that she wanted to stay with under our visa and many more. The day she left she seemed happy and said she needed to take care of her ill father in the Philippines. We hugged and I thought we left off well. At the airport she also had a ticket for Iran unbeknownst to me. She was unable to use it and suddenly turned. She threatened and cursed at staff and demanded the police be called. When they spoke with her you would not believe the accusations she made about our family. She winded up being police escorted on the plane. I'm sharing this to just be mentally prepared for other possibilities and mainly to add that the police were very nice and helpful. I think that is why other ladies on here are warning you about the notice. I'm not sure what she was planning but it must not have been legal with us. The ladies are also telling you to make sure someone is there with her at the airport for any possibilities. I understand how some may be baffled but sadly a lot can happen Good luck

It's a horrible thing to have to do Pickachu, you're not wrong. It's a last resort. There is no other alternative that doesn't put us at risk. I cant have her in the villa arguing and making demands, making our home miserable, so she has to go. You know the lady and what could perhaps happen when she finds out she's not got what she wants.....a way home or on to a new job her way. Of course its not palatable the way things might have to be done but this lady had shown she is good at manipulating things and you are right to be on your guard. I hope everything goes well for :) You seem like a very fair and decent woman. edited by DesertRose1958 on 24/05/2013

[ wow... do people really do this ?? Agree Pikachu, I find it very condescending and disrespectful that people think they can treat human beings this way. This whole thread is bordering hysteria if you ask me. I totally disagree. If you have spent close to 10000dhs on sponsorship fees, then the maid breaks the contract through stealing, mistreating children, etc then you need to get them away from your home and end your liablity towards them in the quickest, safest way. If a maid works hard, doesn't break her contract then of course it would be totally inappropriate but in some instances it is the best thing to do. The OP (maids forum) was about the maid not mentioning she had left the house to see her sisters. Not about stealing or mistreating children. And even if a maid does, that is no excuse to sink to the same level. We shall have to agree to disagree

Yep, unfortunately have been there and was absolutely the right thing to do. She went crazy and it would have been a terrifying journey if we had told her before we set off.

Agree - We are both going. Can't give her minutes notice as she will need to pack, but only long enough to do that. Is it right that immig can take care of her if very early? Timing is dictated not by flight time but by time she makes a move to go to her sisters for the weekend.
