We are moving to Dubai in a few weeks time and I'm looking for a language therapist for my 2 year old. He has been diagnosed with a speech delay here in the UK but will not have time to start the sessions he's been referred to before we go. Does anyone know where I could take him? Thanks!

Bilingual children invariably take longer to develop clear speech but catch up and frequently overtake. Youngest children also often talk late for a different reason. Has their hearing been tested and found to be normal? Do they comprehend instruction? Can they make their needs known? Whilst waiting to see a SLT use lots of singing - nursery rhymes - as rhythmic speech is easier for children to replicate. Make sure you are not anticipating needs too well - don't automatically hand over/do what they want, give them a chance to ask. Most importantly don't get too hung up on their speech and how it compares as the tension and anxiety this causes can exacerbate any pre existing problem. I assume you are reading lots and lots of books to them and have them facing you in their pushchair so they can see you speaking to them?

Sometimes its difficult to know what is normal and what is not..But a cue is to check if he or she is doing well in other areas. Its really worrying that more and more children are going to be diagnosed and' labeled' wrongly in the present Dubai. 3 years is so young to expect kids to act big and wipe their noses in school and talk non-stop. Not for majority of children anyway. My brother did not say a word until 3 years..only nodding. My granny then asked my mum..if his hearing seemed okay? and he was socialising well..all others were positive. This was over 30 years ago. Today he is a Consultant Psychologist and who knows if it was present day...He might not have gotten admission into any school at all! I think its kind of a sad situation that children are going to be forced to grow up so quickly way beyond the neurological capabilities of most of them..a practice that will only end up feeding more clinics for these children. All in all, each child has to be evaluated on so many different basis, keeping a keen eye is useful and if ever any behaviour or better still behaviors seem odd, to ask a doctor. May God be with us all as we work out the best thing for our kids.

Im sorry but this is just ridiculous! How can a 2 year old have a speech delay? Whoever sold you this is telling you complete BS. If he was 4 and still struggling to talk then yes get a speech therapist but there are so many ponzi 'specialists' out there who will tell you whatever. My youngest son only started to really speak at 3 where as my oldest started talking very young. They are all different. Dont stress yourself so much with all the 'specialists' . Let your child be a child and develop at his/her own special pace. appetiser what happened when it came to school assessments here and your 3 year old could hardly speak?

Thanks everyone, all your posts makes me feel better. It seems like the school assessments could be a nightmare though, eek! In Sweden, where I'm from, kids don't start school until they are 7 and most can't read or write before then! They still turn out ok though... I will definitely mention that he is trilingual and I'm sure it has something to do with it bit then again I have a friend with a 14 moth old bilingual girl who is talking non stop. It's so difficult to know what's " normal" sometimes.

In an ideal world a child would have all the time to catch up on speech but not in Dubai. By three if he is not chirping away on assessment day he won't be in any school. We had speech issues with our first born (we are bilingual) and on his assessment day at jebel ali primary (when he only just turned three) he was turned down and the lady told us on our face that she cannot understand anything and he should be taken to a speech therapist. ( talking of unwanted free advice). Needless to say his speech did come in next 8 months but the stress we went through with all the pressure from all directions, wouldn't wish that for anyone.

I had to put my 5 penny worth in here - my grandson who has an English Father and Chinese Mother didn't say a word for the first 2 years although he understood everything we said to him. He did a lot with sign language too. He went to China for a month and was completely immersed in the Chinese language with the family over there. Apparently, he had to share his Mummy's bed in China because when he got to our house, and saw the sleeping arrangements suddenly said "I want to sleep in Mummy's bed". A huge sentence for his first one! Up until then he only said Mamma and Dadda. Give your little one time, it takes time to digest three languages. I'm sure he speech will come - when he's ready. Good luck.

Thank you, I will look into those places! There's a huge waiting list here as well; 18 weeks was the latest I heard ( although it's free). He has been making a lot of progress lately and he comes from a trilingual home so I'm not too worried for him but it would be great to get some extra help. No one has picked the up the point that your child is trilingual. Many multilingual children can take a little longer to communicate fluently. You say your child signs, so maybe that is a less frustrating way for him to communicate until his brain can comprehend and communicate in three languages. If you feel there are issues when you arrive here then there are speech therapists around who can help and give you a second opinion, but do tell them he is a trilingual two year old!

I really don't know as I have no previous experience with children... But if you compare him to other kids his age he seems to be lagging behind quite a bit. He can't put two words together and uses a lot of signing to get his point across but he clearly understands everything in both languages. I will probably have him assessed again once we've moved. Thanks everyone!

He has been diagnosed with a speech delay here in the UK but will not have time to start the sessions he's been referred to before we go. Does anyone know where I could take him? Thanks! So how much does a 2 year old have to speak? My almost 2 year old is a very happy child but isn't talking yet apart from a few words and a few abbreviated words but I'm sure she will talk in due course. My brother as well as my friends little boy didn't start talking until they were 3 both are non-stop talkers now. I find 2 very young to introduce a speech/language therapist and believe that in sensitive children the delay might be even longer due to the additional stress they are exposed to. I personally would seek a second opinion.

I visited this organisation Sensation Station at Ibn Battuta this week http://sensationstation.ae/what-we-do/therapy-department/speech-language-therapy/ and it was very professional and child-centred. In addition to Speech Therapy they do Occupational Therapy and MultiSensory work as well as having educational psychologists for assessments and diagnosis. They are also very transparent on their rates and prices - its on their website. Hope it works out to be what you need.

I hate to say it but I know more people that have moved back to their home countries because their children have speech troubles than any other reason. Speech therapy in Dubai has huge waiting lists and costs a fortune.

hi, it would be best if you could bring some report or something documenting this diagnosed speech delay so that you are not made to wait here, for him to turn 3, before any therapy is started. there is always a wait list for therapy...so you can start putting his name in Rashid pediatric therapy center( it's closed for summer and would reopen in september) and kids first medical center. there are others also but i dont have any experience of them. do bear in mind...speech therapy is not covered by insurance over here and could be quite expensive and varies from center to center. in Rashid an hour long therapy session would cost you 400 dhs. reports and assessments are charged separately. Hope you find a good therapist for your kid.
