Hi I'm originally from Buckinghamshire too. We lived in Doha for a year and now in Dubai. My children went to compass school, there are three campus locations. Be prepared that traffic is bad and the driving is shocking! Once your husband gets his visa then you can apply for yours and the children and only then you can get a driving licence. Good luck

Nina, That's great to hear your contract has come through. The school situation is sounding worrying. I have also looked for online schools in the past, but at secondary level - I am not sure what is available at primary level. May be worth checking that your husband's company would be prepared to fund any private home tuition you decided to hire in lieu of school? Have you a date for moving yet?

Hi romain That's what I think we will end up doing.... So far every school we have tried has said they are full. It seems like it will be easier if we are out there and can view them in person, I seem to be just hitting a brick wall at the moment and I'm loathe to keep handing money over to find out that we are nowhere near able to get a place. It's encouraging that you just went for it. I am thinking if We look for property in the Al Waab area it may centre us around a few school possibilities? Where are you living and what school did you end up getting into? I agree it's so disheartening for kids to take an exam and not get a place. I have twins and don't know what I would do if one got in and the other didn't? Best Nina

Hi Ninac we took a chance and came out here and then drove round the schools that had places after having spoken on the phone. Luckily my seven year old got a place at our second attempt. He took a test at the first and failed ? It seems that is the norm to assess them and then offer the place which seems harsh when they are so young!

Wow that's great to hear. We got out official contract a couple of days ago. We have applied to Park House and DESS. DESS say they have no spaces and recommend we don't come until we have been offered a place at school. It's not that easy though. We are all slated to be out there from 1st Dec. So I have to hope that one way or another we get a place somewhere!! I have been given details of an English real estate agent out there by a mutual friend. So will contact him and keep you posted re: Al Wabb. We need a 3 bed and it looks like we can get something for around 17.000riyals pcm :)

Hi Nina, I am in a similar position - my husband has been offered a job in principle, we're just waiting for HR to get back to us to finalise details. Government workers only got back from their Eid holiday on Wednesday, and now it's their weekend; I believe that's why progress has been slow over the last fortnight! We're from Derbyshire and have 3 kids. All will be in secondary by next September and I will have to stay here in the UK until my daughter has finished her GCSE's (and of cause done her graduation ball!), so my hubby will go out before us. At least it will give us time to build up a few savings, get the various permits sorted out , get through the school application process and my hubby can check out the accommodation. We are also looking at compounds in Al Waab area. I've heard there's a little less pressure on accommodation and schools right now because there have been a lot of lay offs in the oil industry - I guess it wouldn't harm to contact the schools and check out the situation. If you do have to home school for a while, there's a well established home schooling support group 'Doha Home Educators' - they have a Facebook group and a more private online discussion board. Let us know how you get on. Hopefully things should move forward for us both this week as everyone will be back properly after the Eid holiday tomorrow. ?. It will be nice to step out of limbo land and have a firm decision!

I would strongly suggest the first thing you do is secure places for your children before deciding where to live. Places in good schools can be very difficult to secure (some people wait years for their preferred school) depending on the year needed. Once you have a confirmed school placement, then you can decide which commuter battle you wish to engage in. The school run or the one to your husband's employer. Commutes that would take 20 minutes on a Friday morning can easily become an hour or more during rush hour here. Traffic is dire and getting worse with all the construction going on and most of it is scheduled to last at least a year and probably longer (i.e. the airport is still not entirely complete, although open, and is now nearly 10 years behind the initial planned schedule). Depending on the PRO at the employer, you may be waiting for your and your children's residency permits to be processed for several weeks up to 2 months (they can't be processed until your husband's has been completed). The Supreme Education Council has ruled students cannot be enrolled until they have their RP in hand. Some schools may allow the student to enroll if the RP can be shown to be in the works. If you do a quick search on here, there are others who have direct experience in dealing with the schools. My advice, start calling now. Thanks marycatherine.... We are still waiting for my husbands official contract so have been loathe to hand over money for school applications in case it all goes belly up! We have had a couple of calls and emails. Park house and Sherbourne are looking like great schools for us, but Sherbourne much more expensive. I have a call planned with them next week so I can understand a bit more. As much as I would like school sorted before accommodation I can't see it happening.... Maybe we will just find a compound between the two! Thanks for your advice re the RPs. My husband is going to a government owned company and his boss believes it to be quicker but one thing I am learning is that what they say is not always what happens and when they say it will..... Just the culture I guess of mañana :)

There are lots of British schools but places can be tricky . Apply to several as places may not be readily available .

Hi Ladies I'm new to the site.... I'm from Buckinghamshire in the UK and it looks like we may relocate to Doha with my husbands job. I know zilch about the area other than my googling. I've been to Dubai but not sure how it compares. I need to find us somewhere to live. We have five year old twin girls and also a British school. We think the timing will be approx Nov. so all in all.... Some advice would be excellent and to meet some fellow expats for advice when we come for a reccie would be a bonus :) thanks in advance! Hi Ninac, I am Burcak from Istanbul Turkey. I'm living in Doha since June with my husband. We have no children yet. Because of these I have no idea about school sorry. But I can give you some advice for living areas. First you need to decide living place, compound villa or apartment? Second you need decide rent a house furnished or unfurnished?(You can find both of them easily) Compound villas ( I 'd seen.) are old and huge but you can find new and small one.All compound have swimming pool, sport halls and playgrounds. Some of have special beach. It would be more comfortable for your twins find a new friends and play freely. There is no traffic no noice. For Apartments I suggest The Pearl to you. The Pearl is Marina place. You can find more information in here http://thepearlqatar.com/main.aspx lots of foreign people live in here. Like me :) All building in the pearl have swimming pool, sport hall and playground. you can go to private beach with your familiy at the weekend. Other options for apertment is Beverly Tower is located in West Bay city center. You can find more info in here http://www.regencygroupq.com/beverly-hills-tower.html I think thats all enough for you at the beginnig :) If you want ask anything you can write me.I am here :) I hope thats useful for you.
