Doha Metro Tracks Expected to Be Completed This Year

The Doha Metro tracks are expected to be finished by the end of 2017, making the metro possibly operational by end of 2019.

Doha Metro Tracks Expected to Be Completed This Year

Qatar Rail has announced that they’re aiming to hit a milestone in 2017 by finishing the tracks for the planned Doha Metro by the end of the year. Last September, they completed the tunneling.

Doha Metro Tracks Expected to Be Completed in 2017

The company expects to finish around 70 per cent of the public transport project this year. This means finishing track installations, giving key operator contracts and receiving the first four out of its 75 driverless trains. As part of the first phase, there are 37 stations currently under construction.

The company already started installing electrical equipment and finishing the stations’ structure in the past few months. They’re focusing on a cost-effective approach, wherein they try to sustain their future operations by using property development, advertising and retail.

The Doha Metro will be connected to two other rail projects – the Lusail light-rail line expected in 2020 and a long-distance passenger and freight service to the GCC.

The metro will feature:

37 stations and three lines all connected at the Msheireb station:

  • The Red Line North has 18 stations from Al Wakra in the south to Lusail in the north.

  • The Green Line has 11 stations from Al Mansoura to Al Riffa via Education City.

  • The Gold Line has 11 stations from Ras Bu Abboud to Al Aziziyah.

Quick distances: There will be an average of 3 minutes between stations.

Automated fare collections: There will be contactless systems that allow passengers to have a card that they can top-up with fares at the station or online.

Platform screen doors: There will be separate doors between the tracks and the platform as a safety barrier. This is an important addition to any new metro system.

The Doha Metro is expected to be operational by end of 2019 or beginning of 2020.
