Suffering from debilitating migraine? Have you seen specialists over and over again only to tell you that there is no cure from excruciating migraine attacks? Tried every type of painkiller out there but nothing worked to prevent frequent attacks? Maybe it is in the food you eat!
Doctors agree that diet, as well as other factors, can trigger a bad headache or migraine attack. Depending on the person suffering from it, triggers may vary from scent of a strong perfume, flashing lights, lack of sleep, hormones, the list goes on. But knowing what type of food can trigger a bad attack can help you tremendously.
1. Avoid cheese.
Cheese is rich in tyramine, an ingredient that forms the breakdown of protein. As food ages, the amount of tyramine also grows. Some people may be sensitive to tyramine and would not even know it. Theforefore, cheese, as well as other food that have been preserved for a while, should be avoided in order to stay away from headaches.
Example of cheeses that can trigger an attack are blue cheeses, processed cheese, mozzarella, cheddar, and the list goes on.
2. Avoid preservatives in food such as the evil nitrites.
Headaches happen when there is increased blood flow to the brain. For food that are preserved with nitrites, people who suffer from migraine attacks should avoid eating canned goods, prepacked or read-to-eat food, and other processed items because they contain a large amount of nitrites.
3. Avoid excessive chocolate.
While some may argue that chocolates can be good for headache sufferers, too much of something can be bad. Therefore, try to limit intake of chocolate because many headache suffers identify chocolate as their trigger culprits.
4. Too much caffeine or absence of it.
As contradicting as it may sound, too much caffeine can induce a headache as well as absence of it. There is, what we call, a withdrawal headache and it usually comes in the form of headaches. For some, a strong cup of coffee is their best remedy for a bad headache. The body works in different unique ways so try to pay attention to what works and what does not when it comes to headaches.
5. Avoid any food that will give you brain freeze.
For people who don’t get headaches, brain freeze can pass after a few seconds but for those with migraine, it can go on to a full-blown migraine attack. Therefore, it’s best to avoid getting brain freeze altogether to stay away from migraine attacks.
How else can you manage a migraine attack?
Keep a food diary or a migraine diary in order to find out what your trigger is or are. It will help you avoid getting frequent migraine attacks. For some people, cold packs help by placing it on the carotid pulse right over the frontal part of your neck. You can also find that placing an ice pack on your nape (back part of the neck) can be helpful as well. Most of all, do not forget to hydrate all the time. Dehydration can trigger nasty headaches so sometimes all you need is to hydrate and your headaches might just go away.
