Smoking is one of the tough habits to kick. I have seen friends and family struggle to quit smoking. Some may even succeed for several months to years then fall back on the saddle. In this case, they would have to start from zero again, which is why most of them fail once they try the first time and do not succeed.

Why choose to quit smoking?

Women who become long time smokers manifest signs of aging earlier. For example, teeth become grey and nicotine-stained. Hair becomes less shiny and eyes look tired. When it comes to physiological health, smokers produce mucous more and develop a chronic cough that never goes away.

While some women smokers claim that smoking keeps their weight down, it is because the act of smoking provides an oral satisfaction, which suppresses their urge to reach for something to munch on. Nicotine also raises the metabolic rate, which enables women to burn calories faster than their non-smoking ladies.

The long road to quitting requires a lot of will-power but what people fail to recognize is that their diet while quitting also matters. However, this should not entice smokers to further stick to the habit because while losing weight is coveted by women, the consequence outweighs the benefits.

Choosing to quit smoking is difficult especially when quitters realize they gain weight easily right after they do. The nicotine withdrawal and depriving the body of oral satisfaction will enhance cravings to nibble on something—mostly the easier and the tastiest—crisps, sweets, biscuits and other sugar-loaded food.

Here are some healthy alternatives to avoid the cold turkey junk food binge:

Eat Lots of Vegetables

Rich sources of Vitamin C, which aid in the repair of damaged cells, therefore also damaged tissues. Example of dishes that can be prepared are baked aubergines stuffed with mozzarella, stuffed or roasted peppers, vegetable casseroles, spinach quiche, carrot and cucumber sticks and the list goes on.

Eat More Fruits

Berries are excellent source of antioxidants such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. Aside from this, they are also loaded with Vitamin C that are necessary to fight aging, rehydrates skin and provides the necessary nutrients that your body was deprived of while you were smoking. Your filling of fruits can also curb sugar cravings when you're trying to quit cigarette smoking.

Remember that quitting does not have to be a one-time successful journey. You may relapse but if your will power is strong enough there are a lot of people who have successfully kissed the habit goodbye. If you have success stories, share them with us to encourage fellow ExpatWoman to quit this habit.
