Interesting, I see of course letting them grow out of control until they are bigger and wider than the house looks ridiculous! They also are incredibly ugly, they do not regrow on old wood and so become bare at the base, in addition they poison the surrounding soil and nothing will grow within several feet of them.

I for one am glad they're getting rid of Damas trees. They grow incredibly fast as do their roots. We had so many problems from our neighbour's Damas trees shoving their roots through our sewage pipes. We weren't the only ones either.

Don't get me started on these awful bushes!! Our neighbour who backs onto us has Leylandii right across the bottom of her garden which of course are also at the bottom of ours. They were about 15 feet high last summer and my DH went round to speak to her about the possibility of having them taken down and a fence out up instead. She refused point blank. After some "discussion" she eventually had them cut down to about 8 feet but they are still causing problems for us. We are just waiting for Scottish law to change which could mean that they have to be removed. We have even offered to pay for the removal and erection of a fence to no avail. She then had the cheek to put a mesh fence on our side (but still within her boundary) to keep her dog in!!

Leylandii are great for privacy, but not sure they would cope with the heat. Fast growing aswell. And they are even more hated in UK than Damas trees in UAE! And they wouldn't grow in the soil, let alone the heat. Best to stick to Neem trees or treliised climbers, Just curious, why are Leylandii hated? Because they cause a lot of conflict between neighbours... there is even an association in the UK representing 'victims' of malicious planting! I saw a documentary once showing how some ppl had deliberately placed leylandii trees around neighours' homes to block their view. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-15018807

Hi, Some of you may know or have read about the new regulation, that all Damas trees in Dubai must be cut down :( See link below: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/sudden-death-for-thousands-of-trees-in-new-dubai-1.1024077 We had a few in our garden which have now been removed :( and are looking for advice on which type of tree would be best to replace the Damas tree. The new type of tree needs to offer privacy between our villa and the neighbours which means its needs to be high in height, with minimum leaf mess and preferably no flowers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! x We planted a type of ficus to screen the neighbours -it likes the heat (some ficus dont go well in full sun so you would need to ask the nursery which one is the right one) . This ficus is very bushy/dense and has grown quickly. They can get very tall. There are also neem trees which are relatively cheap but they might spread and drop their leaves (same with the delonix/flame trees). edited by gopies on 23/04/2014
