Once upon a time, on a snowy winter night, a cool mum decided to treat her 6 kids with ice cream – for breakfast! Her then-outrageous treat was so tempting that the world now celebrates it as ‘’The Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.’’
Now, any sane person with a slight interest in nutrients would tell you that filling up your belly with sugar and dairy first thing in the morning is far from healthy, but one study claims otherwise.
In November 2016, Yoshihiko Koga, a Japanese professor at Tokyo's Kyorin University proved that eating ice cream in the morning increases brain activity.
Here’s what exactly happened: Scientist Yoshihiko Koga divided people into two groups. He fed one group ice cream then asked both groups to take a series of mental tests on the computer. The lucky people who chowed down on ice cream right after waking up performed tasks more quickly and accurately than people who didn’t – hence proving (doubtfully) that our brain performs faster when our bellies are filled with deliciousness.
Koga’s study made headlines, causing kids to dance in joy and leaving parents to fear the consequences.
The sceptics around the world weighed in. Some argued that eating breakfast of any kind, whether its eggs, bread or ice cream will increase your brain function as opposed to an empty stomach. Some reluctantly agreed that a high glucose meal will boost mental capacity considerably compared to a fasted brain.
Now the question is – should you eat ice cream for breakfast?
According to experts, one experiments isn’t enough to counter centuries of research that all concludes on one note: Sugar Kills. But for the sake of pure happiness, you may trade your oatmeal cereal for a scoop of ice cream... Just this once.
