This Is What Pancakes Look Like In 10 Different Countries

Pancakes around the world

Nothing beats the satisfaction of waking up to the sizzle of hot batter in a pan. The sight of fresh-off-the-griddle pancakes is filling enough make you happy on a crappy morning and that is the case - everywhere around the world.

A little history lesson reveals pancakes are actually the staple Palaeolithic fast food. It''s almost impossible to track down the countless ways it's eaten in different parts of the world.

Since Pancake Day (known as Shrove Tuesday) is right around the corner we decide to do track down the most delicious ways pancakes are tossed, filled and devoured around the world.

1. America – Classic Pancakes

This is as classic and easy as it gets: The traditional recipe is a mixture of all-purpose flour, sugar and buttermilk with preferred choice of toppings — including whipped cream and berries.

2. England – Pancake With Sugar and Lemon

Brits prefer their delicately rolled pancakes with a dash of lemon squeeze and golden syrup.

3. France – Crêpes

The French may have called dibs on this delectable version but the world isn’t far behind. Crêpes are large, thin pancakes made of swirling batter. The flatbread is then wrapped around savoury cheese, melted chocolate or sautéed vegetables.

4. Malaysia – Apam Balik

Apam Balik in Malaysian means folded pancakes. The dish is a mixture of rice flour blended with a sweet peanut butter filling.

5. Sweden – Raggmunk

Pancakes and potatoes — a winning combo! Swedish make these crispy potato fritters that are a cross between hash browns and pancakes called raggmunk — a popular side dish to go with meat and fish dishes.

6. India – Uttapam/Dosa

A widely popular dish in India = these thin rotis are made from fermented rice and lentil batter and are usually served with spicy potato stuffing and curry.

7. Finland – Pannukakku

The Fins love the custardy version of pancakes. The vanilla infused batter is topped with berries, cream, jam, and/or powdered sugar.

8. Japan – Okonomiyaki

The Japanese version is called Okonomiyaki, that translates to ’how you like’ or ‘what you like’. This savoury pancake has a shredded or chopped cabbage in the base but beyond that, you can add whatever you'd like to the batter.

9. Russia – Blinis

Made with yeast and buckwheat flour, blinis are small and thick pancakes often topped with sour cream and fish. They are often served as appetiser at ceremonial gatherings.

10. Uganda – Kabalagala

Pancakes in Uganda are all about bananas. Relatively smaller and thicker in size, these sweet patties are made of mashed ripe bananas and flour then deep fried till golden brown.
