One of the best things about World Pancake Day in the UAE, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is that it's the perfect excuse to tuck into a stack of delicious, steaming hotcakes.
But if the traditional fluffy pancakes or lemon and sugar toppings aren't cutting it for you, we found some flippin' delicious alternatives that will have you piling them high.
Have a browse through our top 8 best pancake ideas and recipes for some Shrove Tuesday inspiration this February 25.
8. Okonomiyaki pancakes
Ideal for those who prefer who want to dig their fork into a savoury pancake, try the Japanese okonomiyaki hotcake.
Translated to "grilled as you like it", these stacks are made from a typical flour and egg base mixed with shredded potato, cabbage, soy, ginger, and your pick of meat/proteins. You pretty much have free reign on toppings, such as honey sauce, mayonnaise, or spring onions.
7. Sweet crêpes
Originally from France, these large, thin pancakes are a sweet way to celebrate the occasion! Crepes are made by swirling a thin layer of the batter in an oiled pan. The pan must be titled in a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly, then flip to the other side.
Often best served with chocolate, strawberries, chopped bananas, maple syrup, honey, or whipped cream.
6. Ice cream pancakes
It might be Shrove Tuesday, but that need not limit you to one type of dessert. Try adding a scoop of your favourite ice cream on top of a steaming, fresh stack of pancakes and some pieces of fruit.
5. Ombre pancakes
Bored of the typical golden brown pancakes? Kick your regular hotcakes up a notch by making them ombre-coloured, like this plate of gorgeous pink ombre pancakes topped with fluffy marshmallows and frosting.

4. German pancakes
Also known as "Dutch babies" in the US, German pancakes are bowl-shaped delights made by pouring pancake batter into a cast-iron pan over a stove, then baked into an oven, and it puffs up like Yorkshire pudding.
Try the German spin this World Pancake Day in the UAE with cherries, sliced apples, or other chunky fruit compotes. You can even go the savoury route with classic ham and cheese.
3. Dosa pancakes
A South Indian classic, dosa pancakes are wafer-like, savoury, vegan dishes that are made using fermented rice and lentil batter. They are also often stuffed with a spicy potato curry - for those seeking a savoury pancake with a hot kick this Shrove Tuesday, don't miss out on this one!
If you're not keen on a heavy pancake, try the Sri Lankan version of these hoppers, made with coconut milk and rice flour, then stuffed with flavourful sambol, chutney, or fried chicken.
