How To Keep Your Diamond Engagement Ring Sparkling Like It's New

To say that Dubai is a city of glitz and glam would be a huge understatement. Everything here is flashy and over-the-top. And your diamond engagement ring should be no exception.

A sparkling diamond ring is one of the most alluring sights to behold – however daily beauty routines with creams and moisturisers can quickly make your diamond engagement ring loose its sparkle. Few people have time to regularly visit their jeweller for a polish and shine; so, what’s the best way to safely clean your engagement ring yourself to ensure that it always shines?

Here's some expert advice on how to clean your engagement ring and diamond jewellery, with instructions on what to do and, of equal importance, what not to do.

If your diamond engagement ring has been dirtied by a buildup of common everyday items, which is the case for most people, such as make-up, lotion, moisturiser and hairspray, then you’ll be able to clean your engagement ring yourself and get amazing results.

Get a cup of warm, almost hot, water and mix it with soft dishwashing liquid, such as fairy liquid, or liquid hand soap. Place your ring in the water and leave for around 15-20 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, take your engagement ring out and very gently brush the ring with an old soft toothbrush preferably with the ring in the water. Once finished, rinse your engagement ring in clean warm water and dry with a clean soft towel. If required, repeat the process.

If your ring has been subject to hard outdoor use and has a buildup of hardened mechanical grease, the gentle home cleaning process may not be enough and you might need to visit a trusted jeweller for a professional clean. This is unusual, however, so always try the gentle home cleaning process first.

What NOT to do

1. Never use industrial cleaning products, baking soda, dishwasher powder (used in dishwashers), chlorine, bleach, acetone, detergent or toothpaste. All of these products could have a detrimental impact on your diamond engagement ring.

2. Do not clean your engagement ring too vigorously as you may dislodge or loosen a diamond as a result. Additionally, using a rigid brush, wire brush, or any other type of abrasive cleaning material will have a negative impact on your jewellery.

3. Do not use boiling water as you may burn yourself in addition to causing the metal to expand and contract too quickly.

4. If the gentle home cleaning solution does not work always take it to a trusted jeweller to be professionally cleaned.
