A stunning pair of pear shaped diamond earrings has been sold by Sotheby’s in Geneva for a mind blowing record-breaking price of $57.4 million – whilst this price would make most of us dizzy, the pair were expected to fetch upwards of $70 million.
This pair of lovelies were mined in South Africa and are called Artemis (pink) and Apollo (blue). The weigh in at a sizeable 16ct’s each.
CEO of Fergus James, Fergus Appleton, commented, “These colored diamonds are exceedingly rare so it’s unsurprising that they went for such a price – they are truly one of a kind pieces so sellers can pretty much charge what they want for them. The Apollo diamond is rarer so sold for $42.5 million whilst Artemis sold for $15.5 million. This is primarily because blue is rarer than pink – what this does demonstrate is an intense appetite for rare coloured diamonds of a level we have never seen before.”
Well, who would pay this sort of money for a pair of earrings we ask? We’ll probably never know as the buyer decided to remain anonymous.
