What does your calendar look like this month? If it’s anything like ours it’s almost entirely devoid of plans, as December’s glut of festive fun makes way for the bleakness of January.

Maybe it’s because you’re giving up booze for 31 days. Maybe it’s because Christmas cleared out your bank account. Maybe it’s because it’s too darn cold to think about leaving the house for anything non-essential.

Whatever your reason, the desire to hibernate is strong right now, which means it’s time to put away the party dresses and pull on your pyjamas.

But, really, everyone knows that staying in your ‘jammies all day has a tendency to make you feel like you haven’t achieved anything – even when you’ve managed to binge-watch a whole series on Netflix, put on a face mask AND catch up with all the latest celebrity Instagram posts.

What you really need, to fool yourself into thinking you actually got dressed today, is loungewear.

A step up from PJs, loungewear sets are soft, comfy and oh-so-easy to wear.

Usually comprised of a long-sleeved top and jogger style trousers, these slouchy separates are perfect for days spent primarily on the sofa, accessorised with a pair of slippers and multiple cups of tea.

However, much like the athleisure trend, when everyone started wearing yoga gear to brunch, nowadays loungewear is heading outside too.

The latest casual fashion offerings are so stylish that bloggers are wearing them out with trainers or even heels (they make the perfect airport outfit too, FYI).

And no longer are ‘twosies’ only available in a palette of beiges, greys and whites – bright colours and animal prints mean these sets are totally on trend. Plus, luxury loungewear brands are making heavenly cashmere and Merino wool pieces that are way too fancy to only wear at home.

So, whether you’re working from home during the week, indulging in a lazy Sunday or catching a flight for some winter sun (lucky you), here’s our pick of the best loungewear sets and separates in the shops…
