The Golden Globes red carpet was taken over by a black dress code which supported the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and the Time’s Up campaign which helps provide legal aid for victims of assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.

However, Blanca Blanco, Meher Tatna and Barbara Meier received online backlash and criticism for their decision to wear colour to the awards instead. They obviously didn’t get the memo! As most actresses and actors wore black, it appeared that the three women had chosen not participate in the silent protest.

With their dresses standing out on the red carpet more than any other, we’ve explored the reason behind why these women didn’t wear black to the Golden Globes.

Blanca Blanco

Blanca Blanco has certainly received the most online criticism for her velvety red dress with a daring cut-out and leg slit. However Blanca Blanco explained to Refinery 29 “wearing red does not mean [she is] against #timesup movement,” it is just a colour she loves wear! She continued by saying “I applaud and stand by the courageous actresses that continue to break the circle of abuse through their actions and their style choice.”

Blanco also defended her dress choice on Twitter by arguing that “The issue is bigger than my dress colour… Red is passionate.” And had a message for those who criticised her as she pointed out that “shaming is a part of the problem.”

Barbara Meier

German model Barbara Meier also chose not to wear black to the 2018 Golden Globes, as her colourful sheer skirt with embroidered fabric and feathered accents, stood out from the black dress code.

Barbara Meier explained via Instagram that the Time’s Up movement is an extremely important initiative, nevertheless it is her choice to wear a colourful dress. She wrote “If we want this to be the Golden Globes of the strong women who stand up for their rights, I think, it’s the wrong way not to wear any sexy clothes anymore or let people take away our joy of showing our personality through fashion.”

She believed that she should not have to wear black to be taken seriously “US women should shine, be colorful and sparkle. Just like it is our nature. In my opinion this symbolizes our freedom and our new strength. But to make clear: A lot of bad things happened and should never happen again!!!”

Meher Tatna

Meher Tatna, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, also wore red to the Golden Globes, however she did accessorize her outfit with a Time's Up pin to show her support of the campaign. When asked about her decision not to wear black she explained that it is customary in her Indian culture to wear a festive colour during a celebration and as it was the 75th anniversary of the Golden Globes she wanted to celebrate.

Yet all three women emphasised that they were still in solidarity with the meaning behind the black dress code.
