Everything There Is to Know About September's Birthstone Sapphire

The September birthstone sapphire is one of the rarest gemstones on the planet. They are formed of the mineral corundum, the same mineral that July’s birthstone rubies originate from. The obvious difference being that rubies are the red form, and all other variations of corundum come under sapphires. Corundum is a very hard, tough and stable mineral it is the second hardest mineral after diamond, unaffected by acids and most environments. This makes sapphires a popular gemstone and the most stable to use in jewellery.

Sapphires are most commonly known for their beautiful deep blue colour, known as cornflower blue sapphire or Kashmir sapphire being the most valuable of its kind. However, they also come in plethora of colours such as pale pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and brown, these colour variations are known as fancy sapphires. The colour of the sapphire varies due to where it is mined. The largest source of sapphires is found in New South Wales and Queensland Australia, which usually have a dark and inky appearance. They can also be found in the disputed Kashmir region of India and Pakistan, and tend to be the typical cornflower blue. Another popular source is the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.
