Life From London to Abu Dhabi

Meet Lindsey Parry, the writer who swapped the cold and drizzly life in London for the hot and steamy weather in Abu Dhabi...

I’m/ We’re living in:

Abu Dhabi

A bit about me:

I’m a writer and I also have my own blog at ArabianNotes. where I write about life in the UAE, particularly in Abu Dhabi. I moved to the UAE from the UK back in 2006, to Dubai and my partner followed me out a bit later in February 2007 when his job was due to start. He came out to visit me over Christmas the first year after I had moved and we got engaged on the beach and then married a couple of years later, again on the beach in Dubai! We’ve also recently welcomed a new addition to the family, a baby boy earlier in 2015.

How long have you lived there?

I’ve been in Abu Dhabi for two and a half years now but in the UAE since 2006.

Why did you move?

We moved here for work. I’d always wanted to live overseas and a perfect job opportunity came up when I was living in London so I applied, was accepted and the rest is history!

What are the summer months (Jun-Aug) like in your part of the world?

Very hot and steamy!

Is summer (Jun-Aug) the best time of year to visit?

The best time of year to visit the UAE is in the winter, the cooler months from October to April are still very warm and just generally much more pleasant in terms of the temperature.

What do you enjoy doing with your time in the summer?

It’s a great time to go away on holiday to find more bearable temperatures elsewhere in the world, but when staying in the UAE there’s still lots of things to do over the summer months. There’s a summer festival every year in Abu Dhabi with lots of events and activities taking place around the city and the shops usually have some pretty good sales on too!

What’s the highest temperature it can reach in your summer time (Jun-Aug)

It gets very hot and often reaches the late 40s or early 50s (degrees Celsius!).

What do you love the most about this time of year?

I’m not sure it’s the best time of year to love because of the heat - but the UAE is a fabulous place all year round! I love it here!

What do you like the least about this time of year?

It gets so hot that you can see the humidity in the air at night - it looks like fog and feels wet on your skin if you walk outside.

What do you wish you’d known before you moved?

I wish I’d known how good life could be out here so I could have moved sooner! There are so many wonderful things about living here, not least the country’s geographic location which makes it very easy to travel almost anywhere in the world very quickly and easily!

Anything else you’d like to share with us about your expat experience?

I always say to people who ask me about living overseas to just do it – give it a go, what’s the worst that can happen?! If you don’t like it, or it doesn’t work out you can always go home, and having given it a go you won’t spend the rest of your life wondering what if…
