The ExpatWoman Guide to becoming...

The Ultimate Superhero!

With Comic Con being one of the biggest annual expo's in the UAE and worldwide, it's no surprise that expats and locals enjoy getting dressed up time to time as their favourite superheroes. So let us help you!

Okay, so it may have been your childhood dream... To become your favourite, ultimate superhero! Be it Batman, Superman or Thor. But nevermind them, why not become your own superhero. Whether big or small, adult or child, male or female, the feeling of putting that mask on is empowering. And a lot of fun, too! Plus, with the Middle East Film and Comic Con being one of the largest expo's to happen annually in the UAE and also across the world - hello, San Diego? - where better to debut your alter ego? But first things first, there's basic items you need to get started becoming awesome.

Build the Basics

The Ultimate Superhero

First, you're going to need clothing. Nobody will ever understand why you're a naked superhero, and you can't rock up to Comic Con naked. So - spandex and lycra are the answer! You're never going to be able to show off that ripped body and superhero muscles without some tight clothes. Plus, nobody needs baggy clothes getting in the way when they're fighting off the bad guys and with these materials, you can make a leotard, a full-body suit, just pants or just a tee shirt. The creativity is endless. These materials are also beneficial when you need to hide your alter ego while living your normal, everyday life.

If you really can't be doing with the snugness of lycra and spandex, opt for full length leggings and a long-sleeved tee shirt to create a more 'I'm awesome and too cool for spandex' look. You can use block-coloured clothing to achieve the same look as lycra.

Hide your Identity

Superhero Mask

As a superhero, it's very important that you hide your identity from potential enemies and villains! So you need to get your scissors, glue or sewing kit ready in order to make the face of your ultimate superhero. Now remember, this will be the face splashed across the front of tabloid papers and the Internet so make sure it's memorable, but in keeping with your alter ego.

There are several methods of making a mask at home. The first one being, making a simple paper mask. Hold a piece of sturdy cardboard to your face, and measure and draw two dots where the edge of your eyes are, and where your nose is. Draw the shape of the mask you want on the cardboard, using the dots as reference points as to how big you should make your mask. You can do all sorts at this point: have small ears, large ears, a slit for eyes, two separate eyes, big eyes, small eyes, teeth, you could even add fangs to the bottom of it! Make sure to punch two holes so you can add some string or ribbon that will hold the mask in place using your ears. Then decorate how you wish!

Alternatively, you could use tin foil and tape, or even paper mache! Everybody loves a bit of cutting and sticking with PVA glue, right?

Decorate your masks with sequins, felt-tip pen, whiskers, fabric, feathers, leather... There's plenty of options!

Fashion a Cape

Superhero Cape

Now, let's make it clear - you don't have to have a cape! We are well aware that they can prove a bit of a hazard if you fly to close to an airplane, or run through a burning building and what not. But you can't deny the powerful feeling of wearing a cape. It's cool. And they're easy to create! Make a cape from any rectangular piece of old fabric you have lying around, such as an old sheet, that you can cut up. Felt also works really well as cape material, and is inexpensive in most craft stores! Drape the fabric over your shoulders, and make dots where you want the corners of the cape to fall. Warning: make sure it's not too long that you will trip when running after the bad guys - because that's not a cool look! Cut out the shape of the cape using a ruler to help, and then decorate!

Have you thought abour your name, thus, your symbol too? Attach your initials or symbol that represents your alter ego superhero in the center of your cape. Felt works really well for this! Use a hot glue gun or velcro strips to attach. Once complete, now's the best bit: attach the cape to yourself! Tie the fabric in a knot, attach velcro strips or even sew string, ribbon or shoe laces!

Flaunt your Foot Gear

Superhero Boots

Your outfit will slowly be coming together now. You've got your clothes, your mask and maybe even a cape. Now what will you run around in? You have to ensure you get the best footwear to gain optimal running speed, jumping height and dodging-moves speed. You may opt for a traditional black pair of boots, tall or short. Or add a pop of colour to your outfit with a bright colour! If you haven't got the time to be popping to the shops - because you know, somebody is trapped and they need your help immediately - then try the duct tape method! Just put on a pair of your inexpensive boots or shoes that you already have, wrap some plastic around your feet and then start wrapping with the duct tape. And it can be any colour you wish. We know that you have super speedy arms, so wrapping shouldn't be a problem, and you'll be running to the rescue in no time.

Show Off your Superpowers: Complete your Identity

Superpowers

Now to complete your look. At this point you're probably looking like an awesome, ultimate superhero anyway. But it's nice to give the finishing touches! So decide what your choice of weapon is, or whether you have tools that you need to complete adventures, or something to protect yourself? Afterall, Batman wouldn't be Batman without his belt, and Captain American wouldn't be Captain America without the shield. Keep in mind that your powers will determine everything about your superhero alter ego. Consider all of your talents, skills, or knowledge when deciding!

Also think about what kind of superhero you want to become - to help feed the homeless, stopping crime, helping the police, or helping stray animals? Remember though, that every superhero has a weakness of some sort. It's inevitable and it sucks, but it's in the job description. Maybe you'll want to pick something you won't run into very often...? Just a thought! You'll need an origin story, too. Every legitimate superhero has one.
