Thank you so much for your reply. We have a really small garden so I do not think wooden compost works. We also have a lot of cats in out compound so I am worried about these cats raiding the compost. We have had to put number of sprinklers to keep them out (unsuccessfully). We have been using vinegar and baking soda for a lot of cleaning and its is working.

I am struggling with gardening and recycling in Bahrain. It would be really great to get help from people who have been here for a while. I have found both Jassims and Manazil to be really overpriced for the simple things. I have tried the nursery on Barbar Avenue but have not had much luck with getting things together, simple things like getting untreated lumber or rain gutters. Please can some help with these things?

Thanks for all the info. We have just started composting and it is going well. I love the idea of air con water. I never thought of that but will now do it. There is no easy fix for cats but these things have work for me: lemon peel and lemon juice (good for plants and cats don't much like it) black pepper and cayenne pepper mixture garlic (this also keeps away a lot of pests) water shooting scarecrow (this is also great for random workers just walking on the property) I hope this helps.

Avaa, We spent a lot of time worrying about cats and rats re compost bins. But neither bother it. We have been composting for about 3 years. Cats are carnivores, so they won't be interested in composting vegetation. Still haven't found a way to keep the cats out of the garden in general though ;) Al Nooh, the lumber shop on Janabyia Highway is the best place to get lumber. I believe that most is untreated. My DH shops a lot there ;) Rain Gutters, I have no idea. Not sure why you would need them? We also have large pails that we put under the ac drains outside and use that water for potted plants. You would be amazed how much water pours out on a daily basis.

have you looked in your organic foods and cafe store for a compost bin ? here in dubai they have one with a lid on it and that would keep cats out/ smell out etc. We have a similar one and its works great - only don't put large twigs in it or you get air pockets that make that bit go horrid ! thats also where you should get a regular stock of eco cleaning stuff - I use all of that range. too lazy to make my own stuff. good luck !
