The temperatures go from one extreme to the other with the mercury hitting the 30s and above in the summer and then plummeting to well below -30 degrees Celcius in the winter. Bring plenty of books to read during those cold winter months - and read more expat advice right here.

Nationals from certain countries including the US and the EU may enter and stay in Mongolia visa free for a limited period. Other countries, including the African continent, Middle East, most of Asia must acquire a visa from a Mongolian embassy or consulate in their home or host country. The Mongolian embassy in the UK has a list of countries with visa waivers: embassyofmongolia.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=71&lang=en
There are 13 types of visas: Diplomatic, Official, International , Business, Private, Tourist, Work, Investor, Immigration, Religious, NGO, Student and Media visits
Documents required:
- Passport with a validity date at least six months beyond the end of the applications intended period of stay in Mongolia
- Completed visa Application Form for Tourists with one passport size photo,
- Travel itinerary, hotel reservation and insurance are preferable
- For extended stays in Mongolia, this would normally employment with a Mongolian company. A 30-day work visa can be converted into a multiple-entry work visa through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Consequently, expats must apply for a long-term residence permit, valid for as long as the work permit. These permits are usually appled for by employer representatives on behalf of the expat employee.
Driving License
Expats may use their domestic license in conjunction with an international license to drive legally in Mongolia.
The road conditions in Mongolia are challenging to traverse. These are poorly maintained; some traffic signals are broken, street lighting is inadequate. Locals and residents are undisciplined with their driving.
Healthcare
The facilities and services in Mongolia are not up to Western standards and are very limited. Medical institutions are found in Ulaanbaatar; outside the city there are very few. Emergency healthcare is also limited. Medications are scarce so expats must stock up on essential personal medications and prescription drugs as these will not be available in the country. Cash payments are to be expected; expats are advised to obtain a comprehensive health insurance that can reimburse cost of treatments and even medical evacuation.
