International Schools
Expats in South Africa have a few choices with regards to the schools where they will send their children. In South Africa two types of schools exist, public and private. Public schools are the most cost effective form of education and follow the South African IB curriculm. There are four terms in a school year.
South African private schools also include international schools. Most private schools follow a three term calendar and are more adept to international standards. Residents Visa and Work Permit information

Work Permits
Work permits are issued only to foreigners where South African citizens with the relevant skills are not available for appointment. These permits are open-ended and applications must be made at any regional office of the Department of Home Affairs or nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad.
Quota work permits
For a Quota work permit, you must submit the following documents along with the BI-1738application form:
- A passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit.
- Payment of the prescribed fee.
- A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act
- Proof of financial means to cover envisaged living expenses during the sojourn in the Republic. This should be in the form of:
- bank statements
- cash available, or
- travellers’ cheques
- Medical and radiology reports
- A police clearance certificate from each country in which you resided for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
You must also:
- Lodge a cash deposit equivalent to the value of a return or onward ticket
- Submit certification from the South African Qualifications Authority confirming the necessary qualifications for the occupation
- Submit confirmation of the required work experience for the occupation.
- Register with the relevant trade body, if required by law
- Submit all required documentation for a spouse and/or children if they intend to accompany you
Within 90 days of admission, the holder of a quota permit shall submit to the Director- General confirmation of having secured employment within the category or class contemplated in section 19(1) of the Act and every 12 months thereafter, confirmation of continued employment within that category or class.
General work permits
General work permits are valid for the duration of the contract of employment. To apply, you must submit the following documentation:
- A duly completed application form signed by yourself, the applicant
- A passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit
- Payment of the prescribed fee
- A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act
- Proof of financial means to cover envisaged living expenses in the Republic until the applicant receives a salary. This should be in the form of:
- bank statements
- cash available, or
- travellers’ cheques
- Medical and radiology reports
- A police clearance certificate from each country in which you resided for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
- Lodge a cash deposit equivalent to the value of a return or an undertaking from the employer
- A contract of employment signed by both yourself and the employer.
- Original proof of qualifications and evaluation thereof by the South African Qualifications Authority.
- If the qualifications are in a foreign language, you must have the documents translated into one of the official languages by a sworn translator (and provide proof of registration of the translator)
- The original advertisement of the post/position as it appeared in the national printed media. The advertisement must comply with regulation 16(5):
- Reflect the full particulars of the relevant newspaper or magazine as well as date on which the advertisement was published
- Stipulate the minimum qualifications and experience required to fill the position
- Clearly define the position and the duties to be performed
- Measure at least 60mm by 60mm.
- State the closing date for applications
- Should not be older than 3 months at the time of application for a work permit. This period is calculated from the closing date of advert
Proof that all short-listed candidates have been interviewed in terms of regulation 16(4)(d)
A letter of motivation from the employer as required in regulation 16(4)(d)
A letter of registration, if required by a law, from the relevant professional body/board/ council or undertake to register with the relevant professional body, board or council in the Republic of South Africa, where applicable.
Full particulars of the employer including proof of registration with the Registrar of Companies
A certificate by the Department of Labour or an extract from the database of a benchmarking organisation stipulating the salary earned by employees occupying similar positions in the Republic of South Africa
All required documentation for a spouse and/or children if they intend to accompany you
A general work permit shall lapse if within 6 months of issuance and if every year thereafter the holder fails to submit satisfactory proof to the Director-General that he/she is still employed along with proof of the terms and conditions of the job, and the job description.
Exceptional skills work permits
Exceptional skills work permits are valid for three years only and to apply one you must submit the following:
- A duly completed application form signed by yourself, the applicant.
- A passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit.
- Payment of the prescribed fee.
- A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act.
- Proof of financial means to cover envisaged living expenses in the Republic until you receive a salary. This should be in the form of:
- bank statements
- cash available, or
- travellers’ cheques
- A cash deposit equivalent to the value of a return or an undertaking from the employer
- Medical and radiology reports
- A police clearance certificate from each country in which you resided for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
- A letter from a foreign or South African organ of State, or from an established South African academic, cultural or business body, confirming the applicant’s exceptional skills or qualifications.
- Testimonials from previous employers, if applicable, and a comprehensive curriculum vitae
- Other proof to substantiate the exceptional skills or qualifications, such as publications and testimonials
- A letter of motivation indicating that your exceptional skills will be to the benefit of the South African environment in which you intend to operate.
- All required documentation for a spouse and/or children if they intend to accompany you
Intra-company Transfer Work Permits
Occasionally, multi-national companies may decide to transfer an existing employee from a foreign branch to a branch in South Africa. These employees must apply for intra-company transfer work permits. In such cases, no proof of steps taken to obtain the services of a South African citizen/permanent residence will be required.
Intra-company transfer work permits are valid for 2 years only and cannot be renewed or extended. To apply for one you must submit:
- A duly completed application form signed by yourself, the applicant
- A passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit.
- Payment of the prescribed fee
- A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act
- Proof of financial means to cover envisaged living expenses in the Republic until you receive a salary. This should be in the form of:
- bank statements
- cash available, or
- travellers’ cheques
- A cash deposit of equivalent value to a return ticket
- An employment contract with the company abroad
- A letter from the employer/company abroad confirming that the you will be transferred to a branch/affiliate company in South Africa
- A letter from the South African company where you will work, confirming the transfer from the parent/affiliated company abroad. This letter should specify the occupation and capacity in which you will be employed and should also confirm that the maximum duration of employment will not exceed 2 years
- An undertaking by the employer:
- that you will leave South Africa once the 2-year period comes to an end
- confirming that your passport is valid
- that you will be employed in the position for which the permit is issued
- Medical and radiology reports
- A police clearance certificate from each country in which you resided for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
- All required documentation for a spouse and/or children if they intend to accompany you
Corporate Permits
A corporate permit allows a corporate entity (e.g. a mine group, farmer, etc) to employ a pre-determined number of skilled/semi-skilled/unskilled workers. There is no fixed validity period for such permits as the validity period is determined and stipulated by the corporate entity upon application. Applications must be made at any regional office of the Department of Home Affairs or nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad.
- To apply for a corporate permit the corporate entity will have to:
- Submit duly completed application forms signed by the applicants
- Provide a corroborated statement demonstrating the need to employ foreign workers and the number of foreigners to be employed
- Provide a job description and remuneration for each foreign worker
- - An undertaking to ensure that:
- the foreigner workers have valid passports
- the foreign workers will be employed only in the specific positions for which the permits are issued
- the foreign workers will leave South Africa on completion of their duties
- A cash deposit or guarantee for the foreign workers may be payable by the corporate entity or by the workers in the case of skilled workers
- Before the permit can be issued, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has to refer the application to the
Department of Labour as well as the Department of Trade and Industry, who will then approve the number of foreign workers who can be employed by the entity making the application. Upon receipt of the approved number of workers, the DHA will issue the corporate permit and authorisation certificates for each worker in terms of regulation 18(2)(b), then the corporate entity can start recruiting workers.
- Unskilled workers will need temporary residence permits to enter the country. Whilst skilled workers will need to apply for general work permits, although they do not have to comply with all the requirements as prescribed above (for general work permits).
Accommodation
The level of crime is higher in South Africa than many other countries, this is the reason that many people have to make some changes in their lifestyles in order to accommodate the additional safety factors. Many people choose to live in compounds and gated communities that have an armed security guard at the gate and are surrounded by electric fencing.
There are 4 main types of accommodation in South Africa:
- Compounds – known as complexes they can either have a communal swimming pool an tennis courts or have large houses with big gardens that each have their own swimming pool.
- Standalone houses – these houses usually have their own electric fencing and people tend to engage security companies and have sophisticated alarm systems in these houses.
- Gated communities.

Driving License
If you have been granted South African permanent residence, you must convert your foreign driving licence to a South African one within a year of receiving your permanent residence permit.
If you fail to convert your licence within one year, it will be regarded as invalid.
You can also apply to convert your driving licence to a South African one if you hold a diplomatic permit but don’t have a permanent residence permit.
If your licence is not in one of the official languages of South Africa, you must get a letter of translation of the licence by a competent authority.

Your foreign driving licence will be converted if:
- the licence is valid
- translated into one of the official South African languages
- the licence is accompanied by a letter of validity obtained from the relevant embassy and a translation if the licence is not in an official language of South Africa
- the licence has your photo and signature.
What you should do
Go to the driving licence testing centre (DLTC) in the province where you obtained your permanent residence.
Complete the Application for exchange of a driving licence form (DL1) at any driving licence testing centre.
You must submit the following:
- an acceptable identification as required by South African legislation (e.g. identity document (ID), temporary ID, valid South African passport, or foreign passport with permanent residence permit)
- four black-and-white ID sized photographs
- current foreign driving licence
- proof of permanent residency in the Republic of South Africa
- proof that you were not a permanent resident of South Africa at the time the foreign licence was issued (for example, you can produce a passport, permanent residence permit or visa)
- a letter of translation of the licence by a competent authority if the licence is not in one of the official languages of South Africa
- confirmation from a driving licence issuing authority that you have a valid driving licence (stating the codes and relevant categories of vehicle that the person is permitted to drive) that has not been cancelled or suspended
- in case of an International Driving Permit (IDP), you must submit the driving licence on the authority of which the permit was issued
- The driving licence testing centre will issue the driving licence if it is satisfied that:
- you are the owner of the foreign driving licence
You will hand over your foreign driving licence or driving permit when you receive your South African licence.
You will not be required to undergo a driving licence examination but an eye test will be conducted on site before the exchange is finalised.
Healthcare
It is very important that all expats have a good medical health insurance and hospital plan in South Africa. There are government hospitals, and while they have some of the best equipment, they are often over crowded. Private hospitals are very expensive and patients must either have a medical insurance policy that will cover the cost of treatment or must prove that they can pay for the treatment.
