Hong Kong has a long coastline that is full of twists and turns with many bays and beaches. Many of them are well sheltered by mountains nearby, as Hong Kong is a mountainous place. As a result, large waves seldom appear at the bays, making them suitable for swimming.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department - LCSD, manages a total of 41 gazetted public beaches in Hong Kong. With the exception of 4 beaches that are temporarily closed, shark prevention nets have been installed at all the remaining 37 public beaches, of which 10 are in Southern District on the Hong Kong Island, 9 in Islands District, 6 in Tuen Mun District, 6 in Tsuen Wan District and 6 in Sai Kung District:
