| Last updated on 27 June 2017To drive a vehicle in Singapore, you must possess a valid Singapore driving licence for the class of vehicle that you want to drive. This requirement applies to all citizens and permanent residents of Singapore and also foreigners who are residing in Singapore for more than twelve (12) months. Foreigners who reside here for less than twelve (12) months must possess a valid foreign licence and International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by an authorised body in their country of origin e.g. the Automobile Association (AA). If an International Driving Permit is not available, an official translation of your foreign licence in English is required. Driver from ASEAN member countries only need to possess a valid driving licence issued by the relevant driving licence Authority in order to drive in Singapore without IDP.
First Driving Licence Tests
If you are applying for a driving licence for the first time there are a few tests you have to pass. You have to pass two theory tests and one practical test in order to obtain a Singaporean driving license.
- Register an account with any of the test centers in Singapore.
- Book a test for the Basic Theory Test.
- Pass the test and immediately book for the Final Theory Test.
- Practice driving and pass the final theory test.
- Pass the practical driving test.
- A driving license will be issued to you.

Classes of driving license
The Singapore driving licence is categorised based on the following classification of Motor Vehicles:
Class 1 Invalid Carriages.
Class 2B Motor cycles not exceeding 200 cc.
Class 2A Motor cycles 201 cc - 400 cc.
Class 2 Motor cycles exceeding 400 cc.
Class 3A
(a) Motor Cars without clutch pedals of unladen weight not exceeding 3000 kg with not more than 7 passengers exclusive of the driver; and
(b) Motor tractors and other motor vehicles without clutch pedals of unladen weight not exceeding 2,500 kg.
Class 3
(a) Motor cars of unladen weight not exceeding 3,000 kg with not more than 7 passengers, exclusive of the driver; and
(b)Motor tractors and other motor vehicles of unladen weight not exceeding 2,500 kg.
Class 4A Omnibus
Class 4 Heavy motor vehicles of unladen weight exceeding 2,500 kg which are constructed to carry load or passengers.
Class 5 Heavy motor vehicles not constructed to carry any load and the unladen weight exceeds 7,250 kg.
