I wasn't born in the UK but have lived here from the age of 2 and not as easy as requesting a birth certificate from country of origin either..
Certificate of neutralisation is good suggestion but I figured my passport is surely confirmation enough... I think my potential employer is perhaps just being overly cautious... Glad to hear you haven't needed it in your relative experiences.
