I know how you feel - I moved to Abu Dhabi straight from university in the UK a few months ago without ever having been to the UAE before. I'm not going to deny it, it was hard at first because I didn't know anyone.
Luckily though, there is a lovely bunch of people in Abu Dhabi who are very welcoming and, although they were hard to find at first, there is a younger crowd. Most of my friends are mid-20s to early 30s.
If you would like to meet up and have a drink (or two), let me know! I know AD's got a bad rep for being boring and slow but there is definite fun to be had - you just need to explore a bit.
