Actually, your MIL might be right... Over the summer, I went back home transiting through Mauritius. Before leaving Dubai, hubby bought nice bottles of Bourbon and Rum for FIL. We made sure that we could do so since Mauritius was not our final destination and we knew we had another security check point over there. Staff at Dubai Duty Free assured us that there would be no problem: we just had to go to a booth in the alley and staff would wrap the bottles securely in a carton box then seal the box. We could carry the box with us from Dubai to Mauritius but then for 2nd flight, were supposed to hand it over to the crew before boarding the plane (as you would do so for strollers or wheelchairs..). Well, it didn't happen that way!! At the security check point in Mauritius, before entering transit room, our bottles got confiscated! Turned out, rule is passengers can only buy liquid items at the last duty free before final destination (in our case, Mauritius) and staff at any duty free shop around the world are supposed to ask passengers if they are flying to final destination. After talking to a security manager, we were told that we could recover the bottles on our way back to Dubai: Kids and I would check all the way to Dubai, while hubby would need to check to Mauritius only, then go through imigration and customs, recover the bottles, put them in a luggage and check in the luggage to Dubai. Not having any receipt that we left our bottles with security (just our name and return flight details written on the box) we were pretty sure that we would not see those bottles again. Well, at our surprise, we did get them back a month later, following the security manager advice!!! Anyway, no excuse for not buying in Amsterdam!! As Dentro said, very easy to do so.

Hi everyone and sorry for late update! Well, I didn't get any confirmation with KHDA, even though I kept calling... So, at the end, we paid the 5000AED last week... didn't really have the choice, as it was the only school to give us a firm offer for September. Our 1st choice was Star school, but still waiting list. Now, am dealing with DS not accepting to change school... So sad for him :(

I know! Had same feeling at first... freaking roundabout! Now using it every day ;) Still no news from Khda about the registration fees... I guess I have to call again...

Totally agree with Tallybalt about the weather and crowd in France and her suggestions are great! Have also been to those places and would also definitely recommand them.

Hi Carymama, how about serviced apartments? There is this chain called "Les Citadines", clean and quite cheap, but not fancy at all. There are few in Paris at rather strategic places (I know the one in Paris 13eme Place d'Italie, right next to a mall with a supermarket, so you can also do grocery shopping if you don't want to eat out. The 1bedroom was quite spacious,. But as saintlouismama suggested, try VRBO or google serviced apartment or apart hotel, there are plenty of them and you could choose from there what suit you and your family the best. Places to visit in Paris: of course the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, le Louvre, Montmartre (but can be very crowded and overwhelming for children, so try get there early), a stroll in Luxembourg gardens, Disneyland for your little ones (and also for you may be! :)), have to take the RER, it's not in Paris but going East, not too far. Also, if you have time, versailles. Other cities to visit in France? So many!! If you go South, Saint Raphael is nice, les Gorges du Verdon beautiful with stops at small villages "hanged in the mountains". Well good luck with the planning! :)

Thanks for your reply Ukone! I called Khda yesterday and was told by a lovely lady that schools are not supposed to ask full payment of 1st tuition before start of the term. However, she couldn't give me an answer regarding the 5000 aed registration fees(it comes off the 1st term fees but still, it is non refundable). Her colleague was supposed to call me back... but haven't received her call yet. In your case, were the 4000 aed non refundable too? My son will be in Grade 1. May I ask your opinion on the school, the teachers? I have to say we are quiet sad to move him from his current school but we have to, since it's way too far for us now. Thanks Ukone and if anyone else has something to say about Greenfield Community School, please please do!

Thank you very much Ansie!! I've actually already looked into those schools' websites but was wondering if anyone could actually recommend one of the schools. Sorry, wasn't clear on my first post. But as you said, will have to apply everywhere and settle for wherever we will get a space!!
