Hi Max Something in your last post concerned me. Is there a medical reason they have said in advance they will need to take your baby away? I know its best for baby to stay with mum at all times and I was concerned about over intervention here in Dubai. I'm currently doing ante-natal classes and raised this with the midwife. She said there is a tendency for this in Dubai unfortunately but there is absolutely no reason for it. If everything is healthy and normal the baby should be with mum. No exceptions. They don't need to go to the nursery and they don't need to be taken away from you for checks and tests. At the very least if the paediatrician won't come to you, and do whatever he needs to do to the baby while you're there, your husband or another member of your family should go with them. I don't know the full story though - maybe there is another reason they are suggesting this? In any case, I'd raise it with them at some point and let them know your concerns / preferences. It seems we do have to speak up and fight our corner a little in Dubai for what we feel comfortable with.

Hi girls They'll be shutting this thread down if we don't get posting - its been so long! Thanks for reinvigorating Max. Whoa, its getting tense isn't it? 6 weeks to go for me and I'm starting to really look forward to it now. I feel ready...ish. I mean, I'm still terrified about looking after a newborn and the challenges we're about to face but I just can't wait to meet my little man now. I feel like I know him already. We have prodding competitions and everything. I must admit, I'm going to miss being pregnant. I know that might be sickening to hear for some of you women who have had really tough pregnancies. But I've had a really easy and happy pregnancy so there is part of me that will miss it when its gone. Max - on the stretch marks thing, I haven't got any at the moment either but a friend of mine had her first last year and she didn't have any visible while she was pregnant. Then when she delivered they were all over her belly. She was livid. Guess its just the luck of the drawer. My husband keeps telling me if I get them I should wear them with pride and asking if I'm really that vain - it's like he doesn't know me at all!!! My sister in law was induced in the UK last night so we should have a new member of the family shortly. I'm sure she was induced early, not sure why though. There must be a reason. Unless there is a medical reason why (like you Max), I'm avoiding induction if I possibly can. Junior will know when its time. Just hope he's not lazy and like a lie in like his dad! I think I'm pretty much sorted with everything else though. Still need to pack the hospital bag I guess but I'll do that in the next few weeks. Get the essential things in anyway. Or the things I'm more likely to forget! So, here's a question. What is everyone's thoughts on naming a child after his father (if its a boy, obviously!)? It's a big thing in the city where my husband is from and he's always said he would want his first born son to be named after him. I do like the name BUT - his dad is also called that too! I'm torn. I know its important to him, but isn't it a bit ridiculous? Plus, I've seen the trouble it can cause over the years when you call the name and the two of them answer, or letters come to the house and they don't know who its for. We were starting to think of other names but then one of his friends said that his first born son would be named after him, and I could see it in hubby's eyes that even though he sees my point, its just important to him. Its a dilemma. I think even if we agreed on an alternative name, once Junior is born and he sees him, he'll want to name him after him. Just curious to hear what other people think. Like I said, its a nice name so I'm not dead against it. It's not like he's called Albert or something. Apologies to anyone thinking of naming their child Albert. Its a nice name, really.

Hi A1984. Just double check the airline website for baggage allowance. We went home at Christmas and brought a ton of stuff back with us including the stroller, bassinet, car seat and car seat base. Although saying that, we were travelling business so we had 40kg each. I know Emirates in particular don't count the weight of a stroller - and they also give you a little extra baggage allowance if you're travelling with an infant. So you may have a little more than the 30kgs. http://www.emirates.com/english/help/faqs/FAQDetails.aspx?faqId=391781

Hi girls. Thanks twosilverfish and Lyndy for your comments. I guess expat life can be a little lonely at times but we're all doing this for one reason or another. This is my first pregnancy too so its all pretty daunting but its great to have a forum like this where people are having similar experiences. twosilverfish - I do have skype set up and speak to family pretty regularly, but its just not the same as just having them around is it to experience things as they happen. Still a god send though! Mums and Bumps groups are pretty much out for me at the moment because I work full time and then, if they do end up setting up a Saturday session, the weekend is the only time I get to see my hubby at the moment so trying to make the most of that. And thanks for your suggestion on the doula. I have thought about it after someone else's recommendation but I really don't think its for me. I'm not really too worried about the birth and think I would much rather it be an intimate affair between me and my husband. Not really sure I would feel comfortable with someone else, who I don't really know that well, being there. I haven't got anything against the idea of doulas and totally get why people decide to have one but just don't think its for me. Hi Lyndy. Welcome to the UAE. Bet its a bit of a relief after living in Saudi! I am with Dr. Josza at Healthbay and will deliver with him at City. But I believe the other obstetrician at Healthbay delivers at American too so I guess that's who you must be under. I haven't met her so I can't comment on what she's like. But I can say that I'm a huge fan of healthbay. Its a lovely clinic, very organised, very relaxed. They have a team of western trained midwives (many of whom used to work in the NHS) who are all worth their weight in gold as far as I'm concerned. My doctor agreed quite early on that I would just have the major appointments with him and I could just pop in to see the midwives for the regular checkups, and at them appointments, its great to just be able to chat with them about your fears or frustrations. They're amazing. I've got my antenatal classes booked in with them but don't start them until March. I think if you search through this site you will find that most mums seem to favour either American or City and you can read lots of birth stories and experiences from both of these hospitals, the majority of which seem to be positive. It's all down to the vibe you get from the place though. There is lots of choice in Dubai so I wouldn't worry too much. The one thing I would say about being at Healthbay instead of direct with the hospital is that the appointments seem to be easier to come by and it is a much more relaxed environment. You're never left waiting, and nothing ever feels rushed. That's just going off feedback I've read on here about some people's experiences of the hospital ante-natal care though, not personal experience.

Max - Just wanted to let you know, the lovely ladies at Expatwoman have an offer for 10 pound off the Essential Babycare DVD's I mentioned in my last post. Just noticed it on their homepage. Well worth a look for first time mums. Again there's nothing on birthing though unfortunately (although I'm more worried about what comes after the birth!). Oh and we got the BT video baby monitor back in the UK and we've tested it here. Its fab Uzzizach - what a relief that the insurance companies have sorted themselves out with Mediclinic hey? I was waiting to hear the news as well as I'm with Alico and was planning to deliver at City. Now I know I can stress free again - well unless something else comes up between now and April! I suddenly felt like I'd gone all heavy last week. At my last appointment a few weeks ago (when I was at 25 weeks) I'd put on just over 4kgs in total since the start of the pregnancy. Got another check up appointment next week and feel like I'll be told that's doubled. I don't feel like I'm needing to eat especially more and still eating healthy and pretty much managing to do my usual workout routine but there's no denying Junior's growing. Fast. It's exciting though isn't it. As long as he's staying healthy and happy that's all that matters. Does anybody else stress about what things you are doing in your pregnancy that might affect your baby's personality? It's daft I know but everytime I get angry or frustrated (which is quite frequent for me living in Dubai) or upset (had major wobbles last week as hubby is working in Saudi 5 days a week), I feel like it will turn Junior into a stresshead. Like I'm setting him up for emotional issues. Silly isn't it. Its that whole nature vs. nurture argument. What do you girls think? How much does your pregnancy shape the way your baby will turn out? Finding it tough to be away from family back home at the moment. Anybody else the same? I think its because hubby is away so much though too. It sucks. You want your pregnancy to be really important and get lots of attention and for people to realise how HUGE this is but there's nobody around to share it with. I literally go days and days without even talking about it. Its like I'm not even pregnant. Just feeling sorry for myself I think. Well girls, I hope the third trimester is treating you well so far. Keep smiling

Hi Girls Well, my due date is 3 months exactly today. Scary stuff. Although hubby is definitely hoping Junior stays put for a while because he's got exams at the beginning of May. bunintheoven - I got the Uppababy Vista. I love it. It is pretty big compared to some others but I quite like that though - some other trendy prams out there look a bit flimsy I think. Like I said we got a pretty decent discount at John Lewis so it made it worth it for us. Plus we flew back at Christmas business class using airmiles upgrades so we could make sure we had loads of baggage allowance and then just checked everything in. It was no problem at all (that was the full stroller system, car seat, car seat base and both our suitcases) - and we still had allowance left over. If you can travel reasonably economically with what you take, you should be able to bring the pram back with you as checked in luggage. Don't forget, most airlines don't actually charge for prams - just because the child happens to be in your belly shouldn't make any difference! Regarding the whole shopping for baby thing - I hear ya sista! The first bit of shopping we did was at Christmas because we knew we needed to take advantage of the cheaper prices in the UK. So we got the pram, a bunch of clothes and a baby monitor while we were there. Now we're looking at stuff over here I'm shocked (as I always am) at how expensive everything is. And to add insult to injury, when you look at some stuff over here in say Mothercare, they always have the UK price sticker on it too, you know, so you can see just how much more you're paying. Still, we've bought a few bits, and managed to get a cot and mattress last weekend. Not in the sale mind (there is literally nothing decent in the sales), it was just a decent cot for a decent price in Mothercare. The whole sleeping arrangements things is a bit of an issue too. We've got the cot and think we'll try and encourage him to sleep in that but if he feels unsafe in the first few weeks, I think we'll just use the bassinet from the pram system. It's safe to use overnight and has a breathable mattress etc. Might just sit that in his cot until he's ready to do without it. I think we planned on having the cot in our room for around the first 6-8 months ish. Just for ease of convenience for me more than anything with night feeds etc. I'd like to move him into his own room after that ideally but we only have a 2 bed apt - the spare room is set up for guests and we do always have about 5 or 6 separate lots of visitors each year (might even be more once Junior arrives), so I wouldn't want to get rid of the spare bed and change it into a nursery. But at the same time I feel tight just shoving his cot into the corner of the guest bedroom. Don't want to move though either. We've lived in the same place since we moved out here, we love the location, the apartment, we're paying a good price and the landlord seems to be a pretty decent guy. Stalemate. We might have to just suck it and see (which is what I seem to be saying about a lot of baby related issues). I still can't complain really about any pregnancy related ailments. Sure, I'm aching a bit more and finding it increasingly difficult to sleep, but I can't complain. I've had a pretty happy pregnancy so far. Lets see what the third trimester brings. I'm just anxiously awaiting news at the end of this week as to what the insurers have decided to do about the City Hospital price rises. Mine is one of the ones kicking off about it. I must say a 5-6% increase doesn't sound too out of order to me? I know what you mean about the baby moving pinkbutterfly. Mine's constantly on the bounce but I love it. Whilst hubby's working away, makes me feel like I've got a bit of company. The only book we bought was one called "First Time Parents" by Lucy Atkins. Its like a bit of an idiots guide so it doesn't come across as preachy or opinionated. I'd definitely recommend it. Oh and hubby's reading one called "Commando Dad". Cute. I also got that set of Essential Parent Guide DVD's for Christmas. They are definitely worth having a look. Well, think I've rambled enough. Good luck with the third trimester ladies.

Hi A1984. First of all, I'd love to tell you to try and calm down - but that would make me a hypocrite because I was a rather paranoid fool throughout my first trimester thinking of the million things that can go wrong - so I hear ya! It sucks not to have insurance in Dubai but its not totally disastrous. If it helps, I had a friend who had a baby last year without insurance and she said in all she probably ended up paying around 30k (which included all ante-natal and the birth). I think if I was in your position, I would try and pay for the insurance now just to give yourself a little piece of mind but its all down to your personal financial situation. Do be careful about the UK situation. You are no longer classed as a UK resident anymore and are therefore not eligible to use the NHS services. Now I'd say if you did decide to give birth there, they would probably never find out, but I did read that they were clamping down on this and I heard one of those friend of a friend stories recently who delivered in the UK and because she didn't know of the rules, she was freely telling the staff in the hospital that she lived in Dubai and ended up with an 8k bill at the end of it all. You might be able to dodge the system but that's a risk in itself too. Plus, everything Dangerous Blonde said is true plus I think there are benefits to be taken from giving birth in some of the best private hospitals over here (compared to some of the stretched maternity wards in the UK). Good luck with everything but just try and think, if you have to pay a bit to get a healthy, happy baby, then it will definitely be worth it.

Hey girls. Happy New Year. Its going to be a mad 2013! How's everyone feeling? I've grown loads over the last few weeks. Not sure if its baby or Christmas turkey though! Anyone else finding it more and more of a struggle to sleep. My ribs start getting sore halfway through the night and then I spend the rest of the night tossing and turning trying to get comfy. Its driving me nuts. Maybe I need a new mattress. I didn't have quite as much bother on my mattress at home over Christmas. What a nightmare with the whole insurance/city thing ay pinkbutterfly. I've had the same panic this week but I've seen a letter that City (Mediclinic) sent to their partners stating that it was proposing to introduce a 5-6% increase and all the insurers were informed of this 6 months ago. I hate dealing with insurance companies. It always seems they'll do anything they can to get out of paying for things. And now if they go on a reimbursable basis at City, I feel that will only be worse. Don't want to change my doc though, and he only delivers at City. My philosophy is, if we have to spend a few thousand to get a healthy and happy baby and have a good experience, then its worth it. You'd probably spend more than that on a weekend shopping trip! We got our stroller/car seat while we were at home. Hubby's mum works at John Lewis so she got us a massive discount. We went for the Uppababy and I love it. Its built more for hot weather which is great. It was fun bringing it all back in boxes on the plane though. Going to try and brave the DSF this weekend, see if there are any decent deals on cots. Although in previous years experience with DSF its always seemed to be pretty poor. Now we know the *** of the baby its made everything more real. I totally get why people choose not to know during pregnancy but we always wanted to. Trouble is, we don't like any boys names. That seems daft doesn't it out of the million names you could choose. Its not even like we each like different ones and can't agree. We both just don't like any. I can see registration day being interesting. Its great to hear how everyone's getting on.

Hi Girls Its good to hear everyone's doing so well. I'm at 22 weeks now and the little fella (yes, we know its a fella), is doing somersaults and backflips. Its great to feel the movement. My husband felt it on Friday too - totally blew his mind. We went for the 20 week scan (morphology scan I think the doc called it - technical name) at the weekend and it was amazing to see the little one. He's probably recognisable as a human being now which is exciting! The doc mentioned to me about the GTT at the weekend, but to be honest I'm not going to bother. When I saw the midwife at the clinic a few weeks ago (who used to work in the NHS), she said that they just do it as standard here because its private healthcare, but there would be other signs if you've got the start of diabetes and 9 times out of 10 testing as standard is just not necessary unless you have other indicators. I just told the doc, I won't be silly about it but I'm doing well, I'm eating healthily, I'm exercising and there's no history of it in the family. If I start to feel unwell or things change then I'll definitely go back and have it done. But its not something they test as standard in other parts of the world so I'm happy to follow that. How excited is everyone for Christmas? I go home on Friday and can't wait. The hubby has been in Afghanistan all week so that's put a little dampener on the Christmas excitement. He was supposed to return back tomorrow but he's just emailed to say he's coming back today. Waaaahoooo! Let Christmas commence! Take care everyone over the break. It's going to be a big year next year!

Hi Baslaefx1 Dr. Josza used to work in American Hospital a fair while ago but now he works out of Healthbay Polyclinic and delivers only at City. I'm currently pregnant and chose Dr. Jozsa as my OB. He's had lots of positive feedback on here. I obviously haven't gone through the whole birthing process with him yet but so far he has been pretty amazing and I couldn't recommend him enough. He knows his stuff and has a fantastic, warm personality, and importantly for me, is pro-natural birth. However I'm sure I've read on previous threads women who have had c-sections with him and were delighted with the whole process. I can recommend you get in touch with him when you're back. City is also an excellent hospital and Healthbay have a team of western trained midwives on staff. The place has a really nice feel about it. Good luck.

Hey DB Just wanted to let you know I had my NT scans and tests yesterday. Everything is looking good which is a huge relief. HOWEVER, got a bit of a shock when I was told Alico doesn't cover the NT scan or the Papp-A test! Sounds like you had a lucky escape moving insurance companies! Makes you wonder what exactly they do cover. The 12 week checks are standard you'd think! Makes you think what else they might not cover. You're so lucky to have unlimited antenatal coverage, even if the coverage you have for delivery might not quite be enough. Anyway, just wanted to give you a quick update. Hope you're feeling well.

Hi Girls Had my 12 week scan yesterday (although I'm just over 13 now). All looking good. I'm soooo relieved. Doc even gave us an idea what gender he thinks it is, although it is only a best guess at this stage. So we've finally been able to start telling people and its such a relief. There were lots of tears yesterday telling our folks and siblings. It all feels exciting now. Even my hubby has got a sudden rush of excitement has can't stop talking about it where before we were both a bit subdued about everything. Starting to think about how to deal with work etc. which will be a bit of a headache. Well, hope everyone's feeling well. I'm hoping to get a bit of energy back soon and go skipping into the second tri!

Hi. Thanks for the info. V. interesting. I'm with Alico and my standard maternity coverage is 20k. Its all on a direct billing basis, which although is hassle free and means I haven't actually paid for a thing myself, I also feel it means I'm losing track of what's been spent so far on my insurance. However so far everything is going swimmingly. Just eagerly awaiting the NT scan in a couple of weeks. I know the standard cost for normal delivery at City is 11.5, an extra 2.5 for an epidural if needed, which leaves 6k. And I got a list of the full run of antenatal appts from Healthbay which ran up to around 13k (including the early ones I had). Clearly more than I bargained for. And that's not including any antenatal classes etc. which I get I will have to pay extra for. I don't mind that, its just whether I'm having appointments unnecessarily so the healthcare providers can make a little extra cash. And it does kind of worry me that this is all based on normal and healthy outcomes. Any other outcome and it could wipe out our savings. Obviously trying not to think about that but still, you feel like you need to be prepared you know? Still, thanks so much for the information. Its good to get some comparisons. So you've just got the last trimester to go! How exciting. It'll be nice to go through this stage (and the first few months with new bubs) while the weather is fairer. Hope everything keeps going well for you.

It sure is all very confusing isn't it. Different places offer different things I guess. I know the doc I am seeing at Healthbay will also be doing the delivery at City. And they sort everything out for me in terms of registering for the birth etc. at the hospital. So that's something I don't have to bother with. Healthbay do seem to be quite good at offering the full package. As well as the obstetricians/antenatal/delivery care, the team of midwives also offer antenatal classes and post natal support. Which feels more similar to the kind of care you would get in the UK and makes me feel a little more at ease (obviously all with separate costs). Well good look all. Let us know how you get on with your next scans.

Hi Girls. So good to hear everyone's updates. Things are going well for me (I hope/think). Not feeling any nausea or much of anything really. Keep thinking I must have imagined the whole thing and it kind of makes the worry worse but I've actually had 2 scans already so far and both have shown a healthy happy heartbeat. maxmistry - I read on another thread that you were struggling with which docs/hosp to choose. I've gone with Healthbay Polyclinic for the ante-natal care. My decision was based more so on the midwife care they offer (which is all British lead). The place has a really nice feel to it and the people are all super nice. I'm with Dr Josza who is lovely and has really made me feel at ease. He only delivers at City which kind of made my choice for me on that score but its a good choice, I know its one of the best hospitals in the city. My biggest worry at the moment (apart obviously from the fact that everything goes OK with the NT scan etc. - which is in 2.5 weeks time - and by the way, while I'm on the subject why does time go soooooooo slow when you're just waiting around for these scans to tell you everything is OK), is in the cost of things. I work full time and have what I think is a fairly standard insurance coverage. But I've added up what the total ante-natal care plus 'normal' delivery is at City at it still comes to more than my insurance offer. I'm from the UK with the free healthcare so this is all new to me and I'm paranoid that private healthcare will always try and rip you off. This is my first experience with both healthcare in Dubai and private healthcare in general and, although I'm grateful to have had my two early scans, they obviously come at a huge cost and I'm sure they weren't both necessary. Its so difficult trying to weigh up what's absolutely necessary for your care for the associated cost. I don't want to sound dismissive about the level of care I need (what do I know) but I don't feel like I'm hitting the happy medium. And then if anything goes wrong (touch wood), which most insurance companies won't immediately cover, it could literally wipe out all of our hard earned savings from the last few years (especially when you read all the horror stories of NICU bills between 100-300k). Sorry, don't mean to be so negative and don't want to stress anyone else out thinking about this stuff. I think I need to stop reading horror stories in the internet! We've not told anyone yet. Going to wait for the scan in a couple of weeks, at which point I'll be at around 14 weeks. Its really difficult though. We just feel like its the sensible thing to do and as all our friends and family are back home its not like we have to lie to them on a daily basis trying to keep it secret. I know if that were the case we probably would've cracked. Just need to get these next few weeks out of the way and then I can move on to worrying about the birth and then how we're actually going to raise a child! Delight!

Just took a test last night - positive. Eek! Seeing the doc tomorrow. First for me and pretty terrified (even though it was kind of planned). Worked out the due date for end of April
