Hi, I moved here 18 months ago with two daughters then aged 13 who had just finished yr 8 and 17 who had just completed yr 12 in UK. We found a school which did the same exam board and the older one did year 12 again coming out with much better results than in UK, not the same subjects so it wasn't because of that, and has just had fab results in A level mocks. Socially she was fine with redoing it because as OP says, the age range is huge within the years. So in my opinion repeating the year may be the best option , good luck ?

Hi there, like Oldtimer my daughter had this aged 4 or 5 and I also went to see a homeopath, I had never done this before and have never needed to since but I could not believe within a few weeks EVERYTHING had disappeared. There is no way it could have been 'mind over matter' because my daughter was so young and had no real idea what was going on other than answering a lot of questions to the 'nice lady'. Good luck with it x

Hello Ladies my lovely husband has managed to accrue 3 traffic fines in the year since we have been here and we need to renew our vehicle licenses and so he needs to pay them, one is the type where you have to appear in person. Can anyone tell me where exactly you need to go to pay them, is it the police station or and RTA office, when I look on the Dubai Police site it just keeps trying to get me to check the fines which I have already done. Also as both our vehicles are in his name am I right in thinking he needs to clear the fines before mine can be renewed? TIA x

Hi everyone I may have the opportunity for a brief visit to Miami next week however when I look at the weather it looks as if it is total thunderstorm weather, v humid, hot and rainy at this time of year. Would anyone from there be able to comment if this is the case or is it one of those places where it does rain but usually clears up. I've looked on AcuWeather etc but they seem to focus on the rain and humidity which doesn't bode well!!! I would be going just for a relaxing break (while husband works lol) not a sightseeing trip. TIA x

Thanks ladies. I don't really have time to get a new one now but I feel ok that we can leave and return for the one trip I am planning. Once we get back I'll apply for the new one. Really helpful info as usual:)

Get her a uae driver license, you don't need to insure her if she drives your car after obtaining a uae driving license. Your insurer will cover her automatically , but in case of an accident if she's at fault you will have to pay 10% of your car fixing cost in addition to the excess and that's it. All of us (me & my brothers) drove here as minors, one of my brothers is only 21, he's been driving for 3 yrs now, he had his share of minor accidents. All the cars he uses are registered under my name, one is insured by AXA & 2 are with RSA , claims were straight forward. All those under 25 or those with a driving license less than 1 year have to pay the 10%. Just keep in mind that her driving license should be renewed yearly until she turns 21 then she gets a 10 yrs driving license. Hi thanks for all the replies. I checked with RSA and this info widkedangel is exactly right..... I now have to decide if I can pluck up the courage to let her out there :\:

I found the thread, thanks for that. My issue is really with the age, has anyone had experience with insuring their teenager to drive their car on a UAE licence converted from own country licence? Thx

thanks for that, I will look, I spend ages on this site sometimes and haven't noticed it before, trust me to not look just before I post  I have had her license converted though so she is a full driver if that makes sense....

Hi I came last year from the UK with 2 daughters, aged 13 and 17. We were unbelievably anxious about it and my 13yr old didn't talk to me for months before the move, I'm not kidding. Anyway, apart from the very beginning of school (nervous first days) they have absolutely LOVED it, the 13yr old took a bit longer to settle, maybe half a term, but now she couldn't wait to get back after our 6weeks in the UK for summer. I was a bit worried about the dress codes for teenage girls but they seem to have been completely at ease adapting. Schools, mine are both at DESC and love it, with improved academic result too. I couldn't comment on any other schools. Good luck

Hi, I moved here a year ago and we used a Garmin for a while but tbh the Dubai government RTA app is fabulous, it works on gps so doesn't use any data and has not let me down. Good luck

Just a small comment. I went to sign up for Shop and Ship a week or so ago and when I got to the bit where they asked for 45 dollars, or whatever it was, to join I thought no way and just left the page. About 5 days later I got an email offering to join for 5 dollars.... glad I waited!!

Thx for the advice FF. How did the travel councellor work? Do you pay them a flat fee or do they get commission only? Hope you don't mind me asking :)

Hi Ladies I'm hoping my family and I, husband and 2 daughters 18 and 14, can visit Sri Lanka once the schools finish but I am new to this part of the world and so don't really know where to start, I've looked on a million websites but really would like a good travel agent to give me some tips on an itinery, where to be based etc. I think we'd be happy to move about a bit but some of the schedules on tour websites seem too packed, we want a bit of down time too. Can anyone recommend someone to help? Thanks loads

Hi Everyone We have some friends visiting this weekend and want to go out for a Friday night 'brunch' type meal, ie all inclusive , can anyone recommend good places, somewhere on SZR would be ideal. If it's in the entertainer or on Emirates Platinum, even better :) Thx

Hi, I also would totally recommend Cara. We went recently and at first I was a bit intimidated but then really quickly felt so at ease, no pressure, just a lot of guidance. They are really busy evenings and weekends so I would recommend going on a weekday fairly earlyish. My friend is coming here next month and she is definitely going to take her design and get one made by them. Good luck :)

Hi there. I am on HRT, Premarin and I did struggle to get them. My doctor wasn't sure if she could prescribe it, then virtually no pharmacies stock it. I think the pharmacies need a special licence to import it. Anyway, I was told that one hospital in Dubai has the licence and luckily for me also the Emirates medical centre (staff) has stock so I got some there. My impression from the doctor was that the pharmacy knew where to go even if they didn't have it.

Hi, just wondered if anyone had really good mosquito deterrent for outside in the evenings, I'm planning for visitors to be outside and last night I was out for about 10 mins and got eaten alive by them!!! I've tried the coils but they are fairly localised and not really for a large area. Thank you x

Hi there. I moved out in September and we did opt for the starter pack and over all I would say it is worth it. The bed linen, quilt and pillow cases are really good quality, towels too, cutlery is a bit flimsy but fine for back up and the pots and pans, knives etc are fine, I'm still using them even though we have our own stuff now. It also has things like washing up liquid which just saves the hassle of dashing out immediately. Price wise it is good value for money I think. You do need to note that the bedding is only for one bed and so when I arrived with 2 teenagers we still needed to go to Ikea for extra bedding and towels on that first day, just what you need!! Good luck with it all x

Hi I have not been in Dubai long at all and need to cover all my large windows. I've had a guy out to quote and he has quoted for six pairs of really large curtains with pull string (2m x 2.50) three of which are for our bedrooms and are blackout lined. Two blinds (kitchen and office) plus shortening and moving 2 pairs of cheap Ikea curtains we bought for the emergency move in, fitting and all track etc for 4500 AED. I was worried I'd been ripped off a bit cos rather than barter I got him to add an extra blind and the alterations in the price but now I feel better that I have got a good deal. He came to the house with loads of samples (contemporary fabrics) and they have been made in one week. However...........they are being fitted tomorrow............lets see what they look like when they're in, lol :) x

Hi I bought a Bompani elec fan oven with 5 gas rings 5 weeks ago and I hate it. It takes forever to heat, the grill seems to just warm stuff through and when you have the oven on the dials for the gas hob reach boiling point and are REALLY dangerous!!

Thanks for that info, I will get in touch regarding the bus when the school admin is back in after summer holidays, I have put on the application that we do want the school transport. Regarding the shoes I can now convince them that the 'uniform' route is the best one.....teenage fashion being the overriding concern with them!! Looking forward to the changes, once we have got over the massive hurdle of the move!! xx
