The area for selling the pork will eventually be a seperate shop attatched to the new store and work on it isnt anywhere near finished so it wont be available soon there. However when and if it comes and given that the C.E.O of Qatar airways holds licence for Q.D.C I sincerely doubt somehow that they will have the same problem getting it off the runway or through customs, LOL. edited by alee on 16/11/2011 edited by alee on 16/11/2011

Sorry to say this but we are also not fans of Doha,my husband also hates his job here and if things were better in the U.K we would not be here. ( Having said that lots of people love it, or is that the money talking) The entry into schools is a major head ache here be prepared for huge waiting lists and second, third or even fourth choices.

Hi we are at Q bel air which is also resonably close , its smaller than Bev Hills Al Rayan and quiet at the moment but there are some kids a three bed villa is 13000 unfurnished. There is a shaded pool etc and mini golf but no shop or cafe. Its an option , our daughter was at Sherborne and it gave good access to the school as well as landmark, west bay and to my husbands work , Good luck with your search

Hi I am sure kids will be absolutely fine as first time expats we arrived in Qatar with the same worries but our daughter had no problems settling in. She was 8yrs whn we arrived and went to Sherborne for 2 terms (then had change of class) then changed to dess and has now just completed 2 terms there. She has made friends easily at both schools and coped with the changes really well, Dess has been especially welcoming they are so used to children coming and going. Dess has a great timetable of after school activities (privately and school run) which are well organised.Information is sent out regarding these in the first two weeks of term so the children can sign up. We have a tennis coach come to the compound for private lessons but Khalifa stadium have aprogramme for tennis wannabes. Good luck with everything

The heat is a major factor at this time of yr but the main places I would visit are Souk Waqif, Museum of Islamic Art, Cultural Village, The Pearl and of course a shopping mall.

The shaded parking is now being added, its not the best for sure but its a good location for us. Greenery yep I agree it needs more . The compound is fine for what it is it, there isnt a compound here which I think wow thats great as it will always be temporary and never my true home

Hi Sophie Q Bel Air is on the new part of the D ring road right next to the American Embassy. I think the prices for semi furnished are 13000QR for large 3 bed villa 17000QR for 5Bed (they do furnished but not sure of prices) there is a shaded pool, mini golf course tennis court etc and the villas are relatively new bright, light and spacious.

Yes there are some dogs on the compound but as I understand they are always on the lead when out with owners and usually I only see them when peolpe are walking out of compound for exercise. Maintenance we havent had any real issues ,usually they come and repair things resonably quickly but I wouldnt say it was the best or worst. We have a 9 yr old daughter and there are other kids mainly younger and boys. the compound is filling up so hopefully there will be more soon.

Hi Puppylove We are at QBel Air, its a great location for us taking only 6-10mins to get to Dess and easy access for my husbands work. The 3 bedroom villa is more than big enough for us and the facilities are good.

School starts early and can vary depending which school you go to. My daughters school begins at 7.20 we live close by so can leave the house comfortably at 7.00. However at her previous school here we had to leave 45mins before at least so approx 6.30 so we were up at 5.30am (traffic can be terrible). There is no doubt she was ready for bed by 7.00 at the very very latest and to be honest I wasnt too far behind that. Im sure The combination of early mornings and Doha sun will wear out your son as it takes some adjusting too. It can feel like your forever on the road backwards and forwards to school. The Malls tend not to open till about 9.00-9.30. The schools I know mainly do pack lunch, the days seem to wizz by

Iwas unhappy with the standard of teaching, badly prepared lessons, chaotic, lack of school work produced, standard of behaviour , half the class regularly absent, lack of british celebrations, school hours too long and still they cany decide which hours to do, terrible journey too and from school, parking terrible, lack of basic facilities . These are just a few of my gripes and I have plenty of others and they are my views other peolple will have other views. I really think Sherborne has alot to do before becoming a Good school . My daughter was in year 4 (6 others left that I know of from her yr to go to other schools in Doha while we were there) and I wasnt prepared to wait for them to sort out there issues . We went to Sherborne because like you we couldnt get a school place at school of choice. If you need more info let me know and I will give you my email.

It took approx 18 months on the waiting list for us to be offered a place at Dess. We took the place and are all very happy with the school. The enviroment and facilities are good I would recommend it.

I know it may not be always possible but I think you really do have to come and visit the schools here to decide which school is the best for your child. Websites are a good starting point but definately dont make a decision on them as at the end of the day they are a marketing tool. I would from personal experience not recommend Sherborne.

Picklz Yes we did change schools after 2 terms and after 18months of waiting we finally got offerd a place at our first choice. Good luck with your move to Doha I have every sympathy its not easy, keep trying at the school you really like there is quite often alot of movement through the summer and places do come available. The school expatmum mentions sounds a possible but obviously its hard to tell untill its up and running what it will be like.

Hi Just to say if I had my chance again I would not have come to Doha untill my child was in school of my choice . It would have saved a lot of upset some of the schooling here is truly awfull. Some so called British curriculum schools are not even close to uk state standards

Hi Amy good luck with search yes Al Jazi is nice. Al Jazi have several compounds however the one in West Bay is Approx 22000 for a 3 bed villa they have cheaper options at Gharaffa. 3 bedroom I think is 12 or 13 but it is small downstairs with kitchen dining and living area all one and compound has next to no facilitys.

Lady T absolutely everyone does have there own ideas of what is best for their own child, and you are happy with Sherborne, however as a fully qualified teaching assistant and having come straight from the Uk where my daughter was at a good state school I can assure you the standard of education at Sherborne is definately not high whatever the test results!!. You say your daughter was one of the best on test results I guess you mean, one of the the best at Sherborne???

Hi my advice would be to look at the school really closely and decide what is best for your child. I arrived in April and we mistakenly choose Sherbourne it was an extremely bad choice and caused a lot of heart ache. This school is doing a so called Britsh Curriculum???? I dont think so !!! its not for British students, pastoral care is???. At best it would be a poor with very much to be improved in the UK, standards and facilities are rubbish. By the way my child, along with many others has now moved schools. Good luck

You will definately pay more at a hotel for the beach and I would say the facilities at cultural village were great for the kids. The 100QR is for adults, children are at a much reduced rate.
