Oooh, an Icee would be so perfect in this weather! I would put on at least 10 lbs, though, if I had them readily available because that's all I would want to drink! laurelm, I think you have more than made up for not seeing most of the US by moving 7,000 miles away to a place that most people in the US probably couldn't find on a map!!! lol I haven't been to Shakespeare's yet (there are so many things I have to do!!! I need to start making a list!) but these AWA events sound really great -- and I do love my coffee! (and Icees!) That sounds fabulous, I definitely think we should all meet up.

Charlotte -- not too far from G'ville! My brother lives there -- he moved after he finished grad school so we would go all the time.

You said ya'll! Love it. You must be from the south somewhere. We moved from NC -- before that, GA.

I've been here almost 4 years and have yet to attend an AWA event but truly want to! I also have yet to meet many fellow American women which I'd love to do. I'm back in the US for summer if anyone needs anything from Target ;) edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012 Oh, how I miss Target!!!!

The SMCCU sounds really great -- I'm not sure if we'll be able to attend or not (husband's work schedule) but it sounds like fun! Who's going?

I forwarded the email to you that I received from them! I'm definitely planning on attending one of the general meetings and one of the meet & greet meetings, if you're thinking on it -- let me know! I *may* even do one of the "summer gal" events, if I am feeling outgoing & adventurous enough.

My daughter will be attending GEMS in the fall. We all went for a visit on the last day of school (husband, daughter, myself). My husband has done a lot of school visits over the past year and this is the one we decided to go with. Obviously, I can't say for sure because we haven't had any experience from attending during the regular semester, but I will say that I was very pleased with what I saw, and we're very much looking forward to the beginning of the school year! (I just love seeing kids in uniforms and ties -- could they BE any cuter????)

Tina McFadzean runs this fab cooking camp for kids called Little Chefs Dubai. My kids have done it for three years now & love it. She's been featured in Time Out & also does after school clubs at JESS & Safa School. Her remaining summer dates are 29 July- 2 August, 5- 9 August, 12- 16 August, 19-23 August, 26- 30 August, Sunday- Thursday 9 am- 1:30 pm. 050 4583015 Here's a piece on her in Time Out: http://www.timeoutdubai.com/kids/features/27153-dubai-cooking-classes-for-kids This sounds so fabulous -- I think we're going to do it! I checked out the Time Out piece and her Facebook page. Where is the old Metropolitan Hotel? I keep hearing it as a point of reference, but I have no idea where it is!

I think it has been quite some time since there were any plans for water on that side of ET, I understood this had been shelved some years ago. I don't think they would be flattening/compacting sand if they were going to dig it up for a lake? The last mention of it on the construction websites was that the sand was being compacted for a carpark?.. I went to Tips & Toes the other night and it was FAB!!! Been traipsing to a little salon in Satwa for the last few years so there was a huge difference, nice warm water for hair wash & nice and clean etc - it was heaven!!! And on our doorstep!!! yaaaaaay!! What all did you have done????

Hi amkcbrandon Are you in Tower G too? My daughter would love someone to play with as it's still a long time till school opens. We arrive around the end of July, hope to see you then. I think I read a previous post of yours......we were also in the states...husband for 10 years and me 3 years......London too ! edited by dxbmum3 on 07/07/2012 We're in Tower F -- so not too far from you at all! :-) I'm sure you're swamped with getting things ready for your move (there is NOTHING I hate more in this world than packing!!!) but whenever you have some free time, please email me! [email protected] I would definitely love to meet when you arrive! Ladies, I'm trying out "Tips & Toes" tomorrow, so I will let you all know what I think! I haven't tried Valery yet (but I do love the paper their service menu was printed on, if that counts for anything!) Totally excited about everything that is opening up in this area -- my hubby & daughter and anxiously awaiting the opening of "Ming Bowl" -- they love some Chinese food!

Hi ya and welcome to Dubai. I like yourself am a newbie well I've just completed my first year here so I'm sure I'm not the best for any kinda of advise. I feel for you with your daughter but she will be grand once she meets someone. Unfortunately my daughter only almost 6 and my 2 boys 13 and 14 so not much help to ya but there are so many children over here it won't take long. We came the same time as you this time last year and found the place very overwelming. Ramadan is hard, we spent most of the time at the pool to be honest the mall r hard work when u can't stop to get a drink r food. So we leant that after our first visit. Don't venture out for something to eat at iftar it can be crazy with queues of hunger people. Lots of places do good deals around this time and water parks etc stay open late so it not so bad especially as you won't have gotten used to Dubai life as yet. Are you living in excutive towers? so are we we just moved here last month so just trying to get used to things ourselves but it seems good What school your daughter going to. Then you'll find out about playmates etc everyone does it over here ESP when it's this hot but unfortunately lots of people will be gone home for the summer Anyway let us know if ya need anything Xxxxxxxxx My daughter will be attending GEMS Wellington. My husband's visited twice and then we brought our daughter there on the last day of school for her to see things. We were all very pleased with it. Now to just find some summer camps for her to do and after school activities! My husband moved into our new apartment here in Executive Towers a couple of months ago and now my daughter and I have been here for 2 weeks. I really love it so far! It's been nice to have time to work on my tan (which I supposed I will be doing all during Ramadan!). There's still so many things to do around the apartment, though! I hate moving!!! But I'm now finally (almost!) unpacked. edited by amkcbrandon on 04/07/2012

Hi everyone, my husband has just signed the lease on an apartment in J tower and I'm really looking forward to joining you all in early August. I will be moving with my two teenage daughters and newborn baby so am really hoping to link up with some other mums! For now I have a question about orthodontists though. One of my daughters has braces and I'll need to find an orthodontist straight away ( preferably before I arrive) to take over her treatment. I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Thanks (love the updates about shops opening btw!) http://britishlasikdubai.com/blc/ We've just started treatment for braces at The British Lasik and Cosmetic Surgery Center with Dr.Eyad Hamade. My daughter really likes him so far! I've been pleased, so I would definitely recommend, from what I've seen at this point. My husband has some cosmetic dentistry done here as well and is extremely pleased with the results (Dr.Ahmed Habashy). We've all had cleanings done with him as well.

Hi Everyone Super duper excited ! We're moving to Dubai in July.....family of 5. We've been to Dubai twice a year for the past 4 years, so not so new to Dubai ..... but I guess living there is different ! Two days ago my husband, while in Dubai, rented a 4 bedroom podium villa in tower G. Just looking for some info as this is a new tower. Are there any issues with this tower as it is new ? Can't find much about it. We were originally looking into places in Jumeirah, but the houses just seemed so old....and the newer ones were out of our budget. I liked the look of the podium villas online. There's so much info on this thread ! Would love to meet up with other mummies and children..... I have two boys and a girl ....11, 10 and 8. I've already read a lot of posts on the executive towers....thanks for all the information...I'm going to be a regular here ! edited by dxbmum3 on 22/05/2012 dxbmum3, I hope to meet up with you when you arrive! We just moved 2 weeks ago (my daughter & I joined my husband, who's been here already for a year and a half). I have an 8 year-old daughter as well (she's soon to be 9) but she would love to make a new friend! Let me know when you're in and settled -- good luck on the move!

Hi everyone, I'm a 19 year old, expat girl who doesn't post on here very often, but I'm being brave :) I reside in one of the towers and I've read this thread with interest and noticed lots of families moving in. I know that a lot of people have maids, but not everyone does. So I thought I'd introduce myself and let you all know that I'm available for babysitting if you need it. It's so much nicer now that people are moving in and the shops are opening up, it's feeling much more homely and less like a ghost town. Oh and the sushi place is great, expensive, but verrry yummy! I should stop drooling and get back to studying... EnPointe, would love to get to know more about baby-sitting! What's your email address??? My husband and I are definitely looking forward to some adult nights out on our own!

Hello, everyone! I've been doing a little lurking around the website & forums for the past 8 months or so (ever since my husband and I decided we would be moving to Dubai). He's been here for a year & a half, and my daughter (who will be 9 in a few days) and I arrived 2 weeks ago! We're finally getting settled in (sort of) and making our way around the city. We moved from the states, although we spent a year in London before that (my husband seems to love to move around for work). It's so nerve-wracking being in a new city (let alone 8,000 miles away from home!) but I am truly excited to be here (mostly because our family is finally reunited again after such a long time apart!). I'm thrilled to get to know all of you and hear the advice you have to share, both from seasoned professional and newbies like myself! There's so much do to: new doctors, dentists, piano teachers, dermatologists, schools, salons for massages or manicures and pedicures, where to get the best margarita (I think this is the longest I've gone without one!), shoe shopping, finding all new products since you can't always find your favorites from "back home" (especially because it will be a major experiment to keep my hair from going flat and frizzy in this heat!) --- just everything! My to-do list seems never ending. And why is it I can never seem to hang my pictures up on the walls (on my own) in a new place that looks as pleasing as it does when I have my mother around to help give a 2nd opinion?!?! So -- tell me everything I need to know! I would just love to get out and meet some other moms, and I would love, love, love for my daughter to meet some new friends. She is so lonely for "back home" and all her friends, her uncles, and her grandparents (we're all very close) and in the 2 weeks we've been here, she's cried more than I've expected and it's broken my heart! I definitely don't want it to be a long, sad, or boring summer! So how many of you are just on the boards? Have a lot of you actually gone outside of the boards and met in person? Kids meet up together for playdates? Anyone shop together at the mall or do the coffee mornings or hit the beach together? Also, random question -- but I'm dying to know -- how do things go for you during Ramadan? What's it like? My husband works a lot, but I stay at home -- so it will just be my daughter and me over the summer, until school starts! I'm looking forward to getting to know the city and figure out my way around., but more importantly -- getting to know all of you -- hopefully on AND off the boards, and anything you wish to teach me!!!!! Off to read some more posts, learn my way around the boards, and do more research!!!!!
