Dangerous Blonde, great that the Iftar was a success! Wow, did you really make your own sambosek? I would've cheated with frozen or ordered from a restaurant! You can add salt to the frying oil to stop the eggplant absorbing so much. SEY, I made the Maggi Kabsa per your instructions, using a 900g fresh chicken cut into smallish pieces and 3 cups jasmine rice and 1 pkt Kabsa seasoning. I think I messed up with the water, rice was a tad mushy. Didn't brown the chicken in oven. My maid was inspired to add a topping of sauteed raisins and fried onions. Only 1 of my kids ate it. Even though I come from an ethnicity that is famous for using spices liberally, I found the Kabsa seasoning over-powering for the quantities of raw ingredients used, all I could taste was the cloves, cinnamon, cardamom. Will adjust next time.

I have an idea of how to do it with caustic soda but i don't know where to get it here... I'd really appreciate if u can help me..DH used to be a high school science teacher here, he suggests you contact one of the scientific supply places in Bur Dubai behind the Karama post office or in Deira in the warehouse area opp Hamarain shopping Ctr. BTW, there was an article in The National about an Emirati lady in Liwa who figured out how to make soap from date seeds from Internet tutorials and lots of trial and error.

Marina this is an amazing recipe for fall off the bone juicy lamb. Jamie uses shoulder but leg works fine too. You'll have to substitute red wine vinegar with something for the gravy - I would probably stir in some red currant jam or use some cranberry juice. http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/lamb-recipes/incredible-roasted-shoulder-of-lamb-with You can get red wine vinegar in all supermarkets here, it's just labeled as red [b'>grape[\b'> vinegar.

I recently noticed proper clothing donation bins outside the mosques in my area. Previously I would leave garbage bags full of clothes in the ladies prayer areas of mosques! There are charity shops here but not the first option. I recently discovered a new one behind the Choithrams in Karama.

Nice to know that the cannons are still being fired. I sort of assumed that they stopped that practice in Dubai from the time of the second gulf war. Sharjah TV still shows the cannon being fired at Iftar time.

By "fully integrated" do you mean "built-in appliances"? Of course they are sold here in Dubai but not in the malls! You will need to drive around the city: Jacky's on Airport Rd in Deira, Salahuddin Rd in Deira, Universal Appliances near the Aviation Club, Juma Al Majid (local agents for GE appliances). You could also go to a custom kitchen cabinet place like Kitchen Concepts in Deira near the Maktoum Bridge, Kitchens & Beyond on Sheikh Zayed Rd, etc and they will find the appliances for you. You can buy an upright freezer from Carrefour or the Jacky's branch on Airport Rd.

I've stayed at Al Maha and Banyan Tree in the desert. At the time of booking I explain that I want the most private villa plus pool on the property. At Banyan Tree they wrap an opaque cloth around the pool if you request it. I stayed a weekend at a friend's chalet in Cove Fujeirah. While the villa has a pool, it's not private-- you see everyone and they can see you!

Personally I would send my children to Research Science if I lived in that area. I've had friends who've sent their children to both schools. I only have one friend who is truly happy with Creative Science, but she is more keen that her kids do Qur'an memorization and not that bothered about the rest of the academics or how she is treated by admin. Just have to warn you that Creative Science admin and teachers prefer to communicate with parents via e-mail.

Did anyone find the Maggie Kabsa mix? I'm still looking.I haven't found in the shops recently, plan to look in C4 in Mazaya Ctr. BUT I found 1 pkt in my cupboard when digging out a Maggi broccoli soup mix for today's Iftar! Will try using SEY83's method since the Maggi instructions just look v wrong. Hope my little boys like it!

If you know Sharjah, there's a warehouse there called Toros. From Dubai, you go to Al Wahdah Rd, take a right turn just before Sara/ Villeroy & Boch Ceramics and you'll be on a side road with the warehouse to your left. They carry all the Lebanese/Syrian/ Palestinian dry groceries. You can also try Geant, and Lifco (Lebanese Fruit Co) Supermarket on Sheikh Zayed Rd next to Coco's and Al Zahra Medical Clinic. Wafi Gourmet will have it but may be a tad more expensive. I married into a Lebanese-Egyptian family. Personally I prefer the fresh moulokhia but my Arab husband hates all kinds of molokhia, go figure!

I just got back from 2 weeks in Singapore, man that place is more expensive than Dubai! For the first 3 days we had a lovely time because we got the conversion rate wrong, then we used the credit card and wham! reality hit us. Heck the only thing that was cheaper was my toddler's Nuk pacifier chain, at Dhs 12 instead of the Dhs 19 charged in Dubai. I will still complain about the sudden increase in the price of carrots here. From Dh 4.95 a kilo to Dhs 8.99 in 6 months is just wrong!

Plenty of white collar families live in that area, mostly expat Indians and Arabs. There's a Spinneys, Choithrams, Shoemart within walking distance. A bit shabby round the corners but fairly okay and safe.

Do let me know how else can I use it. can i use it to pour it on the cake after frosting it with buttercream? but the problem i face is that u have to melt it very carefully otherwise the oil separates from it. it is more sensitive to heat than the hershey choco chips. also when i melt it its nice and smooth and thin but i cant pour it on the cake coz itz still warm for the buttercream on the cake. if i leave it to cool a bit it starts to harden and is not easily pourable in one go!!! what do i do? You can do this two ways: 1. Split your cooked cake in half, horizontally and just use the buttercream as a filling. Then put the cake into a springform pan the same size and pour the melted coating choc over it, then into the freezer to harden. It looks really good! 2. Frost the cake with buttercream as normal, then freeze the whole thing for 4 hrs. Remove and immediately pour the warm melted coating choc over it. Quickly smooth then return to freezer.

OK, my suggestion is waaaay downmarket since DH likes to "keep it real": Automatic Lebanese Restaurant. Beach Rd, Jumeira and opp the Ramada Hotel in Bur Dubai. The place isn't fancy and your meal will be interrupted by lots of little kiddies but the food is amazingly authentic and consistently great. Did I mention, it's also very good value.

I think he charged me 1200aed for 6 fillings (yes :-( - oh the shame) and x-rays, scale, polish etc over 3 visits. I have heard of people paying nearly that for just 1 or 2 fillings Wow,thats a really good price. I was charged dhs750 for only one filling at a dentist located in Jumeira. Almost fainted when I got the bill as I pay out of my own pocket. Now I just avoid all Jumeira dentists as they all seem to be a rip off.Depend where u go :) Drs Hadi & Hoffman in the Beach Ctr charge lower prices.
