Eggplant does fantastically well in the summer humidity, heat here, I had an explosion of baby eggplants in mid and late June 2 yrs ago. THis was in sandy, not very well-fertilized soil too. The current eggplant bush also has its blossoms falling off, but I have hope that the approaching humidity and heat wave will kick-start its fertility, LOL!

Be careful with mint,it can go mad with runner roots. I always plant mine in a bucket and plant the bucket in the ground. It does like water but don't overwater it . I had mine in semi shade. Thanks for the tips! I went ahead and planted the seedling straight into the ground, in a semi-shaded area. So far it's alive and healthy but not growing anymore either vertically or horizontally. The rosemary seedling, which I planted at the same time in a more shaded area, has finally begun to grow vertically. It looks healthy and eager to grow some more.

there is a huge one near the creekYou mean the Shindagha C4? They have great prices on veggies and fruit (much cheaper than MOE C4) and generally well-stocked, but they don't carry as many European/American imported items as the MOE branch (Fritos chips, Dr Oetker fondant, some canned and condiment items). My new fave C4 is the C4 Market in Mazaya Ctr. They carry most of the European brands found at MOE, and I like the store layout and lighting.

Yes. Only available thru prescription. I got my open-ended (ie not dated) script ages ago from Dubai Community Health Centre. Cost was quite steep, no insurance company will cover psychiatric meds here. Think upwards of Dhs 180/ box.

Pronovias - I would have pulled my teeth out rather than let there assistants loose on my daughter. Nasty is all I have to say about them - but I wont include the Eastern European assitant in that. Sadly though the day I went to make the appointment she was going out to luch and I was left in the hands of 2 other who were just down right nasty. The dresses were lovely but they were all a variation on the same theme - they were almost identical to each other. This is where I thought she'd have found her dress as everything she'd liked on line was Pronovias but the lack of different styles meant there really wasnt anything to chose unless you were sure you wanted the mermaid/bootylicious/fishtail look. My daughter thought she was sure but as it is - she went for what she said she'd never consider. :D Congratulations you and your daughter found a great dress :) I had to quote you only because my best friend got married in Dubai four years ago and she and her mother had the SAME experience with Pronovias! I think she got her dress either from Bridal Room or Wedding Shop in the end, and with a discounted price tag!

Yes! I just saw these on the websites for Al Bayader and Falcon Pack! You may need to buy in bulk quantities though. Falcon Pack also has a retail store (in Sharjah near the University area) you can walk into. Google for the details.

Another Tefal pressure cooker user! I have an 8L Clipso. C4 puts them on special offer during Ramadan. Not sure how the nutritional value is lessened, since there's not much moisture loss. I have learned since, that you pay more for a brand that has a better seal on it. My parents have a Fissler and almost no water evaporates out the pot during cooking, while I have to add 1/4 cup extra liquid to account for water evaporating out as steam in my Tefal pc. <em>edited by Apricot on 04/04/2012</em>

Pigeon hair & body wash (union coop) for shampoo, Dove sensitive bar soap, Bioderma Atoderm body lotion, Zincast (C4) barrier cream. Occasionally we have to use Desitin (USA) for nappy rash. Johnson's UVA/UVB SPF 50 sunblock for children (union coop). Also use Himalaya Herbals antiseptic cream for minor skin cuts, relieve itchiness.

I do. My 20 month old sleeps next to us but may wiggle closer to me at night. I have started putting him to sleep for daytime naps in his toddler bed in his older brother's room, it has worked well so far, and I plan to eventually move him ther for night-time sleep. I moved the older one when he was 15 months old.

CuppieCake, my neighbors and I take our toddlers to My Gym on the Jumeira Beach Rd. The classes are mom and baby from 4months onwards. DS2 is 20 months and a bit shy, the staff were the most professionally trained Asians I have encountered, they understood just how much to interact, when to back off, how to gain my son's trust. The class and the layout of the play room changes every week, the songs and dances are fun, they also incorporate the odd bubble machine, puppet show, simple magic tricks to conclude the 1 hr class. They are also prepared for first aid (my son kept bumping his head or falling off the slide in enthusiasm).

DS1 is enrolled in the Arabic-English section at Chidrens Garden Jumeira. We are v happy with the Arabic teachers. DS1's Arabic is ok (he and his mummy have been learning together!), but now he chatters and sings to himself in Arabic occasionally, which is what DH and I wanted him to achieve! He also imitates his teachers when playing with DS2 which is awesome insight into their teaching and disciplinary methods (thankfully nothing amiss). I do a bit with him at home like struggle through reading Arabic storybooks, answering his questions in Arabic, carrying on conversations in Arabic until I start talking to him in Spanish by mistake. (Not Hispanic, studied the language at school from a young age.)

If the A/C unit in the cold storage warehouse malfunctions, esp in the Dubai heat, that's like a huge amount of ice cream with wonky icy texture which cannot be sold due to public health issues. Surprisingly (or not) you can get horrific food poisoning from refreezed ice cream...Dthat's what I meant to say. Considering the price of whipping cream, double cream milk, I find the cost of making at home sort of equals buying my fave brand. I do agree that home-made strawberry (using frozen Egyptian strawberries) and chocolate (C4 dessert chocolate) are worth the effort.

You might need to go the tailoring route. Ask the employees working the textile corner in Lulu's Barsha (1st floor) for a nearby recommendation. There are small tailors hidden among Satwa, Al Quoz, even Jumeira that can knock up a simple boys shalwar kamees, provided said boy can be in attendance for the measurements, it's an easy pattern. Get material that's at least 50/50 poly-cotton, doesn't need to be fancy Japanese cotton, though that will be more comfy and cooler in heat. Ask for elastic in the waist rather than the traditional woven draw-string closure.

Good reputation. Arabic is strong throughout. Do note that many teachers in the girls' high school section (English Lit, math) are male, often Western. My American friend sent her youngest daughter there from a govt school for 11th and 12th grades. Her daughter found most subjects challenging, except for the math/ science (more rigorous in govt schools). Edited to add that the daughter is now studying Architecture at AUS, on dean's list. Another friend praises the kindergarten and primary sections for their Arabic curriculum. <em>edited by Apricot on 30/03/2012</em>

Toyota...hands down best AC on the market...in any country. ETA: Although...our Volvo with ventilated leather and AC in the front seats was pretty unbeatable. Greenish I think we had the same make and year Volvo estate! I got a Mazda CX9 7months ago, the a/c in the back is SO much better. I chose the Mazda CX9 over a lot of fancy "baby" SUVs like Lexus RX, BMW X5 (only because its rear a/c and rear passenger leg room are awful, defeating purpose of family car), Audi. It has a wide back seat so an adult can sit btwn the two car seats in middle row, good rear leg room in middle row, a great a/c w individual control for passengers in rear, my primary school aged nephews n nieces sit comfortably in the third row, same good boot space as the Volvo estate with the third row folded flat, LATCH and iso-fix car seat points, and the driving experience is that of a VW Golf (my first lovely car) or BMW, not a truck (Honda CRV, Prado, Nissan) or pillow (hello Touareg and Lexus RX). After sales service is great too.

Yes, yes and yes. I resisted for as long as I could (only because it's quite expensive, and I'm a self-taught cake decorator) but I truly learned a lot from my instructor. The first course is quite intense with a lot of homework to bring prepared to class, but very worth it. Having said that, there was one lady in our class who clearly didn't get on with the instructor. She allowed her personal emotions to prevent learning much, and was noticeably absent from the last class upon whose completion all participants receive a qualification certificate.

. Also, some of you suggested staying in Santa Barbara - would that be nicer to stay in than Carmel? Heck yes, esp if you're traveling w teenaged kids. Carmel is nice but more geared to the over 40s, or young couples in lurve. Keep in mind that the Pacific Coast Highway is pretty but it takes AGES to get places. Sometimes the road is closed at certain stretches for repairs, and the alternate route can be very long. The Gilroy outlets are off Hwy 101, a fair bit off the PCH, just so you know. Great America is an amusement park with great roller coasters. Next to it is a strip mall containing a good branch of TJ Maxx, has a better clothes/ accessories selection than that found in the Gilroy outlets! Have fun!

Definitely the Exploratorium in San Francisco as well as Haight-Ashbury. I got stuck into Amoeba Records and ate a fabulous Thai lunch, poked through the Free Tibet shop and the crazy fabric store. Might be fun to drive past Google, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett Packard, Yahoo, Facebook corporate head offices, Xerox PARC, the labs involved in the Human Genome Project, they are all located in Palo Alto/ Mountain View/ Sunnyvale, 35 min south of San Francisco. Ano Nuevo Beach Preserve has elephant seals, you can view breaching whales (seasonal) from Point Reyes National Park (north of San Francisco) or the coastal town of Davenport (40 min south of SF). Monterey Bay Aquarium is lovely.

Out of all the food items they sell here, I find it strange that ice cream is so expensive even the one liter containers from supermarket. Why is it then? I even find imported ones from UK and US even cheaper than the locally made brands. Strange indeed.Ice cream is a nightmare to ship and store before it is distributed to supermarkets. If the A/C unit in the cold storage warehouse malfunctions, esp in the Dubai heat, that's like a huge amount of ice cream with wonky icy texture which cannot be sold due to public health issues.

No, she lives near the Aquarium, so she lives on the opposite side of the highway from Al Nahda/ Al Qusais. I lived in Sharjah many many years ago. Once you find a social group, you will be fine. THE beauty salon was Amwaj Salon, now between the Aquarium and the Carlton Hotel. I even did some aerobics classes there! Qanat Al Qasbah is much improved now, as is the Sharjah Ladies Club (esp their spa). There's a great florist off of King Faisal Rd called May Flowers, reasonably priced and tasteful!

Emirates Environmental Group office on Beach Rd, just before Beach Centre do an official collection each Saturday morning. A friendly employee will offer to weigh the bag of recyclables for you. Their recycling bins are understandably more organized than most others. Or if you want a less touchy-feely experience, you can just dump the bottles in a designated recycling point. Never seen cash-redemption for recycling. Even the older recycling "reverse-vending machines" in the petrol stations just gave you prize-draw vouchers, so Dubai ;)

They do reconstructive work. Rashid Hospital is a better hospital to have surgery done at than Dubai Hospital (only because of internal beauracracy issues, the surgeons tend to rotate between the 2 hospitals but they're a bit unhappier at Dubai Hospital). If you have access to them, the Armed Forces Hospital and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi tend to attract more prestigious surgeons.

Err, I like a bargain, so I go to Pretty Lady Salon behind Dhiyafa/ 2nd December St. I have a fab lady there who's been waxing me for nigh on 6 yrs. She's also a dab hand at eyebrow threading. I won't post her name because she's busy enough! I will mention my lovely hairdresser, Eva, who, when she finds out I've booked a waxing session, books me a hair cut or blow dry immediately afterwards! I often regret it when I go somewhere in Jumeira for waxing. They may use Lycon wax, but the regrowth reveals that their technique ain't as good as my lady in Pretty Lady.

This nursery had a staff upheaval earlier this academic year, in October. The original nursery director who had helped set up Aga Khan Early Learning Center (who is an awesome educator) left for undisclosed reasons, then a month later, the Arabic teacher who she had hired, also left the nursery. I no longer have any contacts there, since the parent I know decided to move her child to The Children's Garden Jumeira at that point.

Is the biryani too spicy for your kids? even though you only use a couple of tbsns? My little boys are 2 and 3 - what do you think? (they have not really been exposed to too much spice). My boys are also little, nearly 2 and nearly 4. We don't eat much spice either. I only stumbled upon this discovery when I took along DS2 to a friend's home, and she had made chicken biryani using Shan Sindhi Biryani spice packet. DS2 wolfed it down. DS1 wanted plain yoghurt on the side. I enrich biryani and most stew recipes by adding 200g each of a changing assortment of diced veggies like carrots, koosa (little green marrows), green beans, eggplant, turnips (even raw beets sometimes), winter squash, cauliflower, broccoli stems. This is the best way I can get veg into my kids. I make a Greek Pastitsio that is very popular with the kids using a recipe from Amy Sedaris. I wish my kids ate mashed potato, I keep cooking them Shephards Pie and Fish Pie and they just spit it out! DH is veggie so I end up cooking a minimum of 2 main courses anyway!
