The mentality some people have, including probably the gardener's boss is: "they had it much worse back home". So you are supposed to believe its ok to mistreat people like this just because its better than home and its illogical to compare with people like us.

The laws protect tenants from huge increases and evictions; but that is pretty much it In every other sphere, the ball is not in their court and the whole system is against them: Tenants pay the agents, yet more often than not the agent acts on behalf of the owner Tenants are expected to cough up 4 or 6 months rent, by taking out a loan if necessary Tenants are not protected against owners who dont pay service charges, depriving access to parking levels and so on. Tenants are sometimes at the mercy of the owners when it comes to visa renewals, as if the owner does not offer title deeds, it is difficult to get the Ejari contract done In almost all properties that we saw, the owner had refused to clean it up before renting it out and refused to repair broken windows, tiles, toilet bowls. So much so that the only properties that seemed worth taking were brand new ones. Many owners' mindset seems to be: "I not pay for cleaning, maintenance, i want 200k in 1 cheque and if you dont pay 300k next year, i want you out"

Yes its awful, and no nothing much can be done. Remember how an iguana was stoned and people actually wrote in and defended it by saying "we are not Discovery Channel type of people". There was supposed to be petitions and what not, did anything actually happen after that, I doubt it.. Some people might be mentally disturbed, but as long as they hurt animals, its ok. Politicall correctness means you cannot say anything more

For Indiana it would be most convenient to transit via Ohare So you can choose DXB-Heathrow-Chicago-Indiana on British/AA combo Alternatively you can take a direct on Etihad to Chicago or JFK, but i think 15 hours on a daytime flight will be too much with a toddler

My impressions were: Good location compared to many towers in JLT Room sizes were quite small but layouts for many 2 bds were unique and nice All rooms have top to bottom windows, so plus is that rooms will be well lit Negatives would be high cost for curtains and rooms facing SZR or South side will get very hot in summer as sun shines directly on them after 2pm because there are no towers ahead of it.

Such comments sounds inapprpriate but i can realize where they are coming from. Entire families are killed, wedding parties are bombed, children are blown to pieces and the only reaction they ge is "tsk tsk, that is what war is like". So maybe people who have lost close ones that way may feel bitter.

No one I know has had an allowance or wage increase. It will come crashing down again. Yet most agents we dealt with said people are getting large salary raises which is one reason rents are going up.

'the owners are abroad and are some super wealthy Afghanis that put their money there after the US announced its withdrawal from that country'. ... something i hinted at couple of months back; "Investors" from Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, Egypt etc form a large number of cash buyers, and apparently in some countries no one bats an eyelid if a person with an official salary of 10,000$ can amass hundreds of millions of $ in a few years

. It amuses me how the newspapers in the UAE say that recessions abroad do not affect the markets here? Really? Wow, some people really suffer from short term memory. . They said that in 2008, even in October/November, people were cheering the Atlantis opening as some sort of proof that the recession will never hit the region.

We are trying to sell our place and what these agents keep telling us is that they have a "serious cash buyer". Also as the keys are with us they all say that their client is traveling this evening/tomorrow morning so they want to view the property NOW. So from a seller's point of view ALL the buyers seem to have lots of cash and travel a lot :) Let me gguess, they carry their cash with them all the time in a briefcase

Just this weekend I saw 5 huge road accidents involving 2 or more automibiles. They really need to lower the speed limit. 120-140 kph is way too fast for the amount of cars on the road now. It was fine 10 years ago but as the population is rising, the speed limit should decrease. Back home in Chicago the highway speed limit is 55 and you can go at 65, which is 100 kph. Going from here to there it seems slow but it's definitely more safe and you can keep the car in control. One main reason accidents happen here is people dont keep sufficient distance or change lanes abruptly, both of these can be lethal at 100 or 130kph. The speed limits are fine the way they are IMO

I just came online to post the info below . gonnae be really confusing...think it'll be old Emirates Road and new Emirates road. We're in a compound just off bypass road and difficult enough to direct taxis here..gonnae be even worse now. there is a lot of this in auh. 1 road with 5 different names...... 30th/khaleej al arabi/airport road/arabian gulf st/mussafah road..... and 2nd is ....... i could go on.... and on..... Airport road was almost always the Rashed bin Saeed Road (th eone that starts from Chamber of Commerce and goes past the Carrefour. Calling the Khaleej arabi road as airport road must be a relatively new phenomenon

The DXB to Atlanta flight gets tons of American subcontractors working in Iraq/Afghanistan. I only bring this up because the testerone level on the plane can be a bit high and the bathrooms quickly become a mess. The quality isn't Emirates but it was ok enough. Very interesting; this is something i noted as well though i am not sure whether they were subcotnractors or military personnel. I guessed as much as most men were quite well built, and people were generally dressed more casually than what you would find on a more civilian crowd. At the risk of sounding like a psychologist, some did have slightly edgy//stressed expressions which is natural

I researched this quite a lot as have had some awful companies over the years here. I went from several recommendations on here for a company called FlyMovers. They were absolutely superb and so reasonable. We really could not fault them in anyway and were full of praise for them (which for my DH is VERY unusual). Professional from beginning to end and performed a miracle getting a particularly difficult piece of furniture upstairs! You can contact them on 050 9312914 (Ali). Thank you for the recommendation, I have contacted FlyMovers and will be using them this weekend I will let you know how it went Glad it went good for you; but for us it was a disaster, and to top it off, they are very evasive once they have done the move. Pleasure! Good luck! Dont be put off when they arrive in an unmarked truck and no uniforms because that means nothing.....IMHO it just goes to show the extra mark up (and less service) for a uniform and some branding. Hope the move goes well :)

Neither would I; damaged a furniture making it useless (loss of 2000 dhs) Unable to dismantle a 6 door cabinet properly; loss of 3000 dhs No point in saving 1000 dhs if you end up losing 5000 dhs And on top of all this they are not apologetic, and evasive as well. I was thinking that the fancier movers charge for branding; not at all, far better to use people with actual carpenters rather than a group of porters unable to use an electric drill

A good place to live in as its cheap, plenty of shopping and eating opportunities. There is a permanent Dallas vs Houston battle, and while people might be slightly friendlier in Dallas, Houston has a more global feel to it The summers are also more humid but nothing bad if you have survived Dubai Austin and San Antonio are 3 hrs and Dallas is 5 hrs . Nowhere is Texas is terribly exciting and does not have mountains you can drive to in a day trip. But it is a good and stable place to live in

I am not sure how i missed the 2 reviews below, and i wish i had as they were an absolute disaster, breaking furniture, refusing to accept responsibility, and being incompetent overall. They, or at least the ones that came to us, were porters, not carpenters or whatever they were claiming to be. This explained why they were unable to use electric tools for dismantling and assembling furniture. And of course, what happened was that a few hours after they left, a large door of a cabinet fell off by itself from 2 foot high, and could have easily injured people standing near it. Their response: "oh, this must have been damaged before, otherwise why will it fall off?" erm, maybe because you were so imcompetent that you wanted to use a small screwdriver to reassemble 6 door cabinets ? They broke 2 handles of the same glass cabinet and had the gall to say "this broke by itself, not our fault" The washing machine sprayed water all over when they had finished "installing" it. And the icing on the cake was they were unable to move a large cabinet claiming it would not fit in the lift. An actual carpenter who came later fitted it easily by removing the corners. But of course if you have small screwdrivers, you will not be able to do it. So we lost the entire value of the cabinet as it was sold for a dirt cheap price.

Sorry I cannot accept any excuses like people are too stupid and do not understand the iguana is harmless. I am sick to death of people wanting a nanny state that gives them absolute guidelines on how to breathe. . Well you would have guessed what people want when you read letters and comments saying "i urge the authorities to" "have signs showing how to enter a metro", "force installation of speed limiters in all cars", and so on. There is another school of thought that indirectly justifies torturing animals. Just bring up the issue, either in person or on the web, and you will see them say "when x number of people are killed in a war no one cares, and people are going nuts over an animal".

1.5 hours the air conditioned Dubai Metro, even in the heart of summer, without water, is not a hardship. Maybe for you, not for everyone. Not every person has the same tolerance levels. In summer, air conditioning alone does not mean you do not need to drink water. I agree with the rule on food, but not water. People here by and large exhibit extreme disdain towards throwing their own garbage; a trip to any natural place confirms that, so a rule is needed even if it causes hardship. I can understand the water bit, as people may start drinking soda, juices, and it will be difficult to monitor.

Try Thrifty, they are more relaxed in some of their policies so might be in this matter as well. I think the police requirement is not true; I was told that rental companies need to hand over credit card numbers for all customers to police, (which is why they took a photocopy of credit cards), and i did not believe them

I'm being driven mad by agents inflating prices too and also sick of them listing properties that actually are not on their books. . And then they show attitude when you ask for a property advertised the same morning (its not there, it got rented long ago)! Previously I had found Rootlands real estate slightly better than the rest; the agent i dealt with i sno longer there but the others are reasonable, they deal with JLT/Tecom. Morya RE had a workable website till last week, we were dealing with them but did not go through . But the fact their site does not work now will make me wary

This greed makes me sick. how can anyone, particularly people with kids ever be settled when greedy landlords and agents too are trying to throw us out and our kids have to be once again moved, leave their friends behind and be unsettled - and I don't know about anyone else but the housing allowance came down with the recession and that sure as heck hasn't jumped back up This is true for most people i know, i.e. allowances have either come down or stayed the same;yet quite a few agents claims allowances have gone up for most people. I know that rents cannot be increased in a random way 30 or 40%; but what happens when the Rent Committee refuses an increas? Does the tenant manage to stay or does the owner have a way of forcing him out. I know of one owner who boasted that he got his tenant fired from a job and out of the country by using influence , just because the owner did not want to wait 12 months of notice period

Rents in some areas have gone up 20-30%, but that is for new tenants. Dont also forget that prices advertised may not be the prices rented at. A 3 bed advertised for 105 has gone for 85-90. A 2 bed going for 75 in December is being advertised for 100, but will probably go for 80-85 Also it is a bit bizarre when some landlords keep properties empty for 2-3 months to get 10k more.

Not quite sure what you are talking about Arch, there are loads of Odysseys on the roads here. Maybe you just aren't out and about on the roads at school run time? I haven't experienced any lack of courtesy either. I've driven SUVs for years so was wondering if I would feel 'smaller' on the road but it actually feels very similar height wise to my Pajero. With regards to 'commanding respect' no one yet has tried to race me at the lights like happens on occasion when I'm in my husbands Q7 although I don't take that as a bad thing! Very possible; dont get to do school runs, and i was comparing with the USA, where Odysseys are very common. But yes, every person who I know who owned an Odyssey swore by it

The Odyssey is very good but it is rare here, and if you will be driving a lot on highways, I would not take it because of its "image". If you observe carefully, most Toyota Previas are bullied, with everyone flashing them, cutting them off, mainly because it is used as a people carrier . Actual Odyssey owners can tell whether this same lack of courtesy is extended to the Odyssey as well An SUV would command more "respect". If you want van style convenience, maybe a Ford flex would be convenient without looking like a van The GMC Acadia seems to be used a lot by families with 3+ kids as well. Of course if you are a confident driver and can handle Dubai roads, the Odyssey would be fine.

It seems like a viscous circle!! Are people that have issues with renewing their visas/applying for visas just suffering in silence or do they know the "right people" to get it sorted? I don't understand how this works? How are JLT residents dealing with this "75% without title deeds"? JLT is mainly resided by ex-pats? I dont think 75% dont have them; the ones we called mostly did not, either because tower is new or because "you dont need the title deed" But at the minimum, i am sure a fifth of properties dont have them.

There is something that does not fit. On one hand, many owners dont have title deeds. We are checking properties in JLT etc. and roughly 75% of the apts dont have title deeds. Even after assuming my figure is skewed, it is safe to assume at least a fifth dont have then yet. On the other hand, we still hear relatively few people facing problems in renewing visas Yet, we are told Ejari is impossible without title deeds And Ejari is definitely needed for visa renewals So the good thing is there has to be some loophole, either ejari is being done w/o deeds or visas are being renewed w/o ejari basd on individual cases

I'm wondering if they just haven't bothered with getting them and if it's not required for an owner to present the title deeds to the estate agent and the property can just like that be rented out? I will try the land department. Is there just one? But if the owner never paid and applied for them it probably won't work. There are no rules between the owner and agent. As long as they can get a tenant with cheques, that is it, they wont ask for title deeds unless the prospective tenant insists. This applies to maybe 90% of agents

I have been reading/asking on this and it may be true. Is there any "affection plan" or "oqood registration" for the property. Some agents told me that would be a substitute for title deed for doing ejari. And where did you try the ejari? If it was at the Land Dept, you can try going to typing centers which do it, i know theres one at LG in Dubai mall Failing all that, maybe your DH can request at the Immigration ?

I know plenty of "youngsters" who have taken out loans to pay for their flashy cars and the only reason they didn't get something even more expensive is because the banks would not allow them to have loan payments that are more than 50% of their salary. Priorities. I could have sworn i read of some driver claiming he/she could not pay more than 100k in accumulated fines because most of his/her salary went to loan repayments ! I blame media as well because you often read reports glorifying such behavior full with quotes from owners like "your car decides your level", "you are respected based on your car" and so on. And insulting drivers "poor" enough to drive a Pajero or Camry edited by Arch on 27/02/2013

I also look around at the " youngsters" running about in their Porsches etc etc and wonder what they do to fund it all. There seems to be a whole class of them all running about in their designer jeans and handbags and big petrol guzzling 4 x 4s scooping up the really expensive imported yogurts in Spinneys. There is no way in this world that all these young husbands are earning bigtime to that level in the current climate so it must be that people don't save but spend. edited by spongemonkey on 26/02/2013 There are quite a few types that live like that, some on credit, but many on hard cold cash as well. Some acually have the cash to do so, but some coming from some particular countries are simply spending black money earned from bribes, smuggling or other corrupt methods. There is a country whose people are among the poorest in the world. Yet that country has a very rich upper class who mostly got rich by diverting millions of international aid money to their accounts because they were friends or relatives of the President. Some of then owm 20+ properties in Dubai and you can spot them from a mile way; little dress sense, but happily buying 50000 dhs watches using bundles of cash and buying a 300k car every 6 months. Lets see if someone can guess the country :)

Oh my God this thread is making me bite my nails ! We had organized some trips but none as long as 2 weeks, If you are sure you want to see the South, here is what I would do : 1) Spend 2 days in NYC. 2) Drive to DC, DC and northern Virginia (including Shenandoah park) should take ~3-4 days 3) Make a loop from DC to Atlanta via the Carolinas to the Great Smoky Park shuld take ~5-6 days 4) Drive from great Smoky Park to Dallas ~1-2 days This way you get to see some of the South's more "elegant" places in the Carolinas, the wonderful DC area, and also the most popular national park in the US, and also Atlanta, a symbol of the "New South" You can skip Atlanta and go from DC to Carolinas to Great Smoky as well. If you are not that interested in the South, I would do this: Spend the first 2-3 days going north from NY to see New England at its best (or 2nd best afer October) I love Dallas but i think its a bit dull for tourists even more so in July when it will 100+ If you wil be in the USA the 4th of July, you should fix where you would want to be on that day. edited by Arch on 25/02/2013
