I have never transferred visas and never had a problem. Just travelled with my DD new passport and just carried her old one as well. GE is correct in that stapling them together can cause problems. Rubber band or to be honest. not even bother..I just present both.

School fees are high. Mine are not at the most expensive schools but pay over 3k a month for primary and almost 7k a month for secondary. Every year the fees o up, last year 7% and this year 5%. Rents also go up most years and it is increasingly difficult to find 'cheap' accommodation. You need yo cost everything out and thrn factor in another few k a month as costs just seem to spiral. We live very frugally out here but it isn't easy. Medical insurance also very expensive and sometimes although companies state that they provide insurance the reality is that the actual insurance is not of a good standard and could leave you well out of pocket. Good luck but please factor in all costs. Currently things like rent and schools are rising fast but salaries are not.

As well as finding a school which has places you probably need to consider cost of different schools unless your Dh's job comes with school fees paid. Fees vary tremendously within schools in Dubai , for eg Nord Anglia is one of the more expensive schools and the fees are such that many people would find them prohibitive. Until your husband has a visa he can't get your residency visa . Kids need residency visas to gain school places. Before I get shot down in flames, yes it is possible to start school without a visa but you normally require some evidence that the visa process is underway.

KH..no need to pay for visas to Oz. They are free if done through government site. There are some unscrupulous sites about which charge you for getting the visa but def free through the government site.

Simple..either 2 xentertainer voucher gives four meals or 1 x entertainer voucher plus 2 kids meals. If kids meals come with drinks they get them but often choose water. If drinks not inc order one large bottle of sparkling water. Kids appreciate money saved on drinks can be out towards other things. Easily comes in under 150 and often not much over 100.

Two adults and two kids aged 11 and 13, never spend more then AED 150 on a meal for four of us and frequent places like Carlucios. We use Entertainer vouchers etc. often keep it not much above AED100. It can easily be done.

Alismum - I was given so much disinformation when I called the passport office but I was told twice that for the 7 day service I had to present at an office, I was also told that my DD's father had to be there which was why I decided not to use the 7 day service. However, I was told several other things which were wrongs who knows. I do think that you have to present at office for the 7 or 1 day service. The one day service can not be done for child renewal.

JoyceB. Very sad to read this and not sure what to say. My experience ( used to work as a counsellor) is that unless your SIL wants to seek help then the more one attempts to get him to seek help the less he will want to engage. Obviously if you feel he is at risk of harm then it is a different story but sometimes ( difficult as it will be) backing right off will be the way forward for him ie neither you nor your daughter taking any part in attempting to get him to seek help. The requirement for this has to come from and sometimes it is only when people are left with their own thoughts that they realise what they need to do. Letting him know you are there for him but will back off and give him space may be the key to him facing issues. In my experience, some people and often men ( but shouldn't generalise) are very good at just blanking and ignoring issues...by trying to get him to seek help, it can sometimes sidetrack them from the real issue ie all their energy then goes into avoiding doing what you suggest rather than them looking at their real issue. This is coming out garbled. BUT basically if possible I would suggest you and your daughter let him know you are there for him but then let him initiate contact..it won't be easy. You can see how childhood issues MAY be affecting him but he may not be making the link or he may not even feel that is the issue on their marriage difficulties. This isn't coming out right..hope you kind of get the gist. Your poor DD must be a wreck. X

Alton Towers is miles from London. It is a good hour north of Birmingham so prob close to 3 hrs from London. I think you would need to get a train to Uttoxeter and then a bus ...pretty long and expensive journey. Way cheaper and easy to hire a car. Often the hotel package works out much better value as you tend to get day passes for the day of arrival and day of departure included in the ticket price.

But even in another country why would she want one? If you lose wright from using one then it just means you are dehydrated and as soon as you properly rehydrate then back to original weight.

Why would anyone want a sweat suit? 1. Just go exercise outside and I assure you, you will sweat loads. 2. Any weight you lose will just be fluid and as soon as you rehydrate the scales will go back to original weight. 3. Loads of research to suggest that if body isn't sufficiently hydrated then you can't burn fat etc. Very baffled as to why anyone would wish a sweat suit....

Tatters...you may have used it but if you are in an accident then 1. Your insurance will be invalidated and 2. You will be deemed to have driven illegally. It is actually easier to hire a car on a UAE licence as otherwise you need bills to an address in uk dated less than three months before hire date.

Pretty sure it is ok to enter uk..it def is ok on a uk passport. Check with embassy here if any doubt, they are very helpful. You need 3 months on it to to return here with a residency visa or six months if no visa. UAE immigration rarely enforce this if you have residency visa but they can.

Pretty sure the new legislation said that you can get an ETD for a new born. I would just check with British consul and actually even before this mess they gave ETD's out if people forgot to renew passports. Only other thing I would check if doing in UK in person is whether both parents need to be present at the office.

Be careful with maxalon....I suffered major tetanic requiring hospilisation after taking it in my early 20's. I threw up throughout entire pregnancy - morning, noon and night, gained no weight at all but baby was 4kg. I was a healthy weight as an athlete before conceiving...seemed to do neither baby nor I any harm. It is awful to feel so bad. If I had to g through this again I would go the acupuncture route. edited by Buddha on 29/06/2014

If old one doesn't come back in time then don't worry. Get a letter (I don't think you need letter but it makes it easier) from British Embassy and go to UAE immigration and have visa transferred to new passport. It seems to be taking max of a week to return.

I also was told several incorrect things by passport staff but their website does state that one day option is no longer available.

Side tracking from OP but it is not that they don't want to work extra time over their shifts..it is more that they get fined if they are late back. I guess they stop for customers hoping it is a short fare in direction of where they are headed then when they find out it is in the opposite direction they have a dilemma.

Lcfcfem - fingers crossed it arrives this evening. I suggest if it doesn't you call British embassy first thing tomorrow as they told me I would need a letter from them to take to UAE immigration to get visa transferred to new passport. If you have both passports in your hand it is easy to get visa transferred to new passport but they said best to get a letter from them if you don't have the old passport. British embassy not open Fri and I not sure about UAE immigration so prob best to at least set things in motion. If it were me, I would just get visa transferred tomorrow then it doesn't matter whether passport comes back or not. It is a horrid situation that many of us are in.. If you require an ETD then you need to cancel residence visa but as you have new passport you don't need an ETD. edited by Buddha on 18/06/2014

As far as I understand you can get an ETD and if you have old passport with visa you are fine to exit. If you get an ETD and passport is in Liverpool you need a letter from Embassy to take to UAE immigration to cancel visa and get an exit stamp. getting an ETD for a new baby should be easy.

JoyceB - I must admit this refusal to take customers if close to end of shift annoyed me but then talking to a taxi driver one day I discovered that they get fined several hundred dirham if back late for next driver to take over the car. He told me that they have to weigh up risk of being reported ( bigger fine but people don't always report) and getting fined or taking the fine for being late back. Can't be easy...zero days off and 12 hr shifts often hours like 3pm to 3 am. No excuse for the driver OP is talking about but did want to point out reason why some are reluctant to take passengers close to end of their shift.

It is really hard and would be much easier if all parents refused to let their kids wear such shorts and belly tops! Majority of girls my 13 year old DD hangs out with wear short shorts to the mall and many wear belly tops( without vest tops underneath) . It makes it very, very difficult for the rest of the parents and even for the kids themselves.

When I spoke to embassy when my passport had been gone almost 2 months with no sign of it they said that ETD could be granted but if passport already in Liverpool then residency visa would require to be cancelled. I think they have always given them out but not particularly advertised the fact...I know two people who had them in the last two years as they forgot to renew passports.
