There's a gift box shop in Mercato Mall near Costa coffee. Nice boxes and all kinds of paper wrapping accessories too. They have all shapes and sizes and a amazing range of colours and designs. edited by Di@DXB on 26/08/2011

It obviously varies from stylist to another even in the same salon, I went to MD a few years back to tone my blonde hair and came out looking like a sack of grey cement powder had fallen on my head. Better ask which stylist is recommended by the previous poster. (And I emailed them to express my dissapointment but never heard back at all.) edited by Di@DXB on 26/08/2011

You say you" speak text in real life" but don't use it with your mum, so your mother tongue is not text and you are well able to speak English. Just a thought - are you going to give your child "text speak" as a first language? It might put him/her at a disadvantage when reaching school age. I would consider brushing up on your English skills for the sake of your child's future. BTW I don' think anyone has been rude to you, fail to see how stating a preference for correct use of English is rude in your view. And of course you are welcome at the event, hope you and your mum meet lots of new friends, perhaps as a precaution you may want to bring along an interpreter. :D

Are you sure the Filipina maid is not using the iron to cook her dried fish? Don't be ridiculous, the OP was ironing herself, no self respecting madam would be touching the ironing board. As rediculous as the idea may sound my filipina actually used to use the iron as a hot plate!

Just wondering but isn’t text speak meant to be used in sms messages rather than forums? After all there's plenty of time and space to write out words correctly here or am I out of date? Perhaps you younger ladies can advise :)

I was looking for a large one a few months ago, I found them in Gift Village, but not big enough for my needs. Coop Safa also had one medium sized one at that time, the really large ones are available online.

Bumping a thread from a few days ago. Does anyone know if you can close an account over the phone after leaving Dubai? Or must it be in person? As its not looking likely my final salary payment/EOS benefits will be paid into my account before I leave for good on Wednesday. Thanks all for your assistance. When I closed my account, on switching banks, I had to go in person and sign forms, I would think everywhere would require the same. I'd be surprised if you could close over the phone, very much doubt it as that would be risky from the fraud aspect for customers. I would call the bank and ask about the proceedure. You don't have to tell them now you are leaving Dubai, you could be just switching banks. edited by Di@DXB on 21/08/2011

Our friends Realising how much better off we are than so many other people from around the world The winter Our friends Living in a city where our friends from 'home' want to come and visit Our friends Learning about Ramadan and what it means to different people Living in a different land and exploring everything about it Learning as much as we can about our new home Lastly, realising that this is not and never will be your 'home' country, you will always require a visa to live here unless you're an Emirati despite the fact that you may have been born in the UAE. [b'>Conversely, if the child of an Emirati is born in the UK then that child is entitled to a UK Passport.[/b'> Birth in the UK does not entitle Emirati or any non UK national to a British passport, in 1983 this law changed and now nationality is only obtained through descent by parentage or by registration upon permanent settlement. So if neither parent is British or permanently settled there being born there will not provide a passport.

There was a recent thread where someone offered a poster help with a shipping issue, seemed a genuine and reliable company since they offered free assistance to the poster in difficulty. Details are here http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=154961 Its a British company that has been here a long time, I have not used them myself but wish I had last time I sent stuff to Oz, it all went horribly wrong for me too. This is the company that offered to help. The contact name was Nigel (ngrayston-at-straightline.ae) http://www.straightline.ae/about.php

You are absolutely right, fear is driving the market and some are making a tidy profit. Stocks had been hit due to the ban on short selling and some predict a worsening situation post ban, but maybe they are just the ones who are making a profit out of all this. We will all need to hold on to our hats for a while by the looks of it. edited by Di@DXB on 18/08/2011

Might be better off just sticking to fish :( I pretty much live on organic salmon, but you would be ok with chops, T-bones and any meat with the bone in as far as the glue issue is concerned. What really gets me about that meat glue is this has been going on secretly for some time in the meat and food service industry, its not been banned in the US, Canada, Australia or the EU, and you can pay top dollar or dirham for "prime cuts" when in fact it is likely to be scrag end thats been glued up with toxic ****. edited by Di@DXB on 17/08/2011

Yes, I don't buy chicken at all, I occasionally buy turkey portions as its not so mass produced as chicken and relatively safer, anyway its a healthier meat than chicken and just as tasty. Do you eat a lot of red meat? That meat glue thing has shocked me. No I don't especially the boneless types as they can so easilly be meat glued stuff! You are safer with bone in meat than filets, roasts eye of round types cuts.

Bought some chilled chicken breast from Waitrose at the weekend but its very jelly like and slimy and isn't really very firm when cooked. You wouldn't expect that from Waitrose in the UK. I never buy frozen chicken here and have my doubts about even the 'fresh' ones, they are always so watery they seem to have been frozen and then thawed. Aside from that there is the concern over use of hormones and antibiotics etc. none of the major poultry farms here vouch that their products are additive free and one well known supplier has admitted their hens are unhealthy. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/poultrynews/22357/chicken-supplies-down-to-the-bare-bones And there's reason to suspect frozen chicken filets may not even be chicken breasts, here's how http://d.yimg.com/nl/australia/site/player.swf?vid=24472661&repeat=0&browseCarouselUI=hide%22 Thanks for this info. So do you just not buy chicken full stop? ETA - and it's the brand that everyone has been suggesting! Looks like no more chicken for me :( edited by dairylea on 17/08/2011 Yes, I don't buy chicken at all, I occasionally buy turkey portions as its not so mass produced as chicken and relatively safer, anyway its a healthier meat than chicken and just as tasty.

We have been through this, you will need salary letters, and I think a lot depends on the salary, if its decent as you say that's a plus. In the absence of a death certificate they[i'> may [/i'>accept a statutory declaration from you and your husband that you are the sole providers for your mother and she has no other means of support. Ther eare forms to fill which you will obtain there and in the end its all down to the discretion of the Director of immigration, these cases are done on the merits of each individual case. So do have a try and I hope you are successful.

I think if you look back at an old thread on this topic you will see that some people have been getting even bigger bills than 5k a month, and i recall one lady as saying she had such a huge bill she was going to have to buy her food that month on credit and another saying she was going to break lease and leave. Personally I would not take the risk, pity as they are nice big properties.

I don't live there, but read about the horrendous DEWA bills. I think people are thinking twice about moving there in the circumstances, it seems some villas are really bad and others ok so guess it would be hit and miss as far as getting a reasonable bill is concerned and unless you can ask the previous tenant so way to know before its too late.

Thanks Water Baby for the info, was the type you bought at Ace or Shariaf Digi the stick on kind and can you tell me the price? Bracey - I'm sure you were not imagining, esp if the dog was barking it would not have just been the TV. There have been several incidents just this week as far as I see from reading on here, as you say Wild Mint seems its the perfect time for this to happen and it does not seem to be restricted to one particular location as I live in a different place to the other reported cases, we all should install better security I think wherever we are.

Anyone know where I can find a motion sensor type alarm? I had a break in recently and having heard reports of recent intruders around think it wise to install something that will alert me in the night, last time I was asleep when a man jumped in through my window, fortunately I had locked my bedroom door and was safe but unaware of his presence, I think I would prefer to know if anyone is lurking around my house and I would have been able to call the police sooner if an alarm had gone off. Any ideas? TIA

Most of these things are benign. If its soft and can move it around a bit its more than likely a lipoma, not to be confused with a lymphona, a lipoma is basically a harmelss fatty tumor that is completely benign. So if you can answer yes to all these questions- Is it soft? Can you move it around at all? Is it painless? You most likely have nothing to worry about but[b'> do [/b'>see a doctor of course.
