thank you all for your top tips, it's very much appreciated! DH has instructed: the large suitcase with coolie bag in, wine and snacks in that! Were you able to use the fridge to keep the vino cool or did you need to bring plenty of coolie blocks? DH wondering if the restaurants are really posh and need to bring shoes and trousers! He's a shorts and birkies kinda guy generally - planning on going to Saffron one night. We are really looking forward to a weekend of chillaxing, it's been an eventful year for us! We've booked the Al Rimal villa.

Does anyone have any tips on the Banyan Tree Al Wadi, we are heading there this weekend and DH says there is a bar in the room, does this mean there's a filled fridge of drinkies? And are they charged like a mini bar is normally? Any other insider info would be welcomed, or things you wish you'd taken or done whilst there. Thanks in advance!

many moons ago I worked for a pharmaceutical company and we made Pyralvex, it was great for mouth ulcers, as you painted it on (looks like a nail varnish bottle) it doesn't slip off like Bonjela etc. It really was good and numbed the pain, I don't have shares in the company - but I can recommend it personally :-) (we also made Klean Prep too, but thankfully have never had to use that one!!) http://www.nhs.uk/medicine-guides/pages/MedicineOverview.aspx?medicine=Pyralvex I'n not sure if it's available here, but thought you might be interested - good luck! <em>edited by cymraes on 08/08/2012</em>

thanks Dxbinthecity a colleague told me that there is no grace period ..... (head is pounding now!) ETA rang the AD helplilne 800 555 who confirmed there is a 30 day grace period - phew! and have registered a 'suggestion' that they give out the correct information!

You don't need the titre test every year just the booster - call the Polo Club vets, 04 4309 797 We only had the titre test to come out here for the pet passport. As long as you have the booster it is ok, and that the date doesn't run out. But please check with the vets.

Honestly, she's not had a heartbeat wrong since, has your DH been under stress? They did all the tests on her in the UK, and nothing showed up ... we've just put it down to one of those things. xx Thoughts are with you, my sister said it was really weird, but mum didn't know anything about it ....and has no recollection, if you prefer to talk off line I can leave my email, but honestly we've had no repercussions x

Hi there, yes my mother had one earlier this year. It was during the funeral of her brother in law (my dad's brother), where she was quite lucid but kept repeating herself and introducing my sister (who people knew) over and over to people. It lasted about 8 hours and after that she had no recollection, and no side effects. She has been fine ever since and no repercussions - she was under a lot of stress at the time, watching out for my dad who had lost his very close and dear brother - they had been my uncle's rock for about 3 years since his wife and daughter passed away - the doctor/GP said it was stress related and may never occur again. She is in great health, very active and completely on the ball, and she's 81.... but as I said the doctor said the stress of it all brought it on. Hope this helps

we've been to the On Time typing centre in building 13 in Knowledge Village twice this Ramadan, no problem in and out in minutes. Can't remember the timings but it was very quiet the two times we went, and the parking was good!

where are you looking? All the villas we've seen have pools either in the back or at the side of the house - Ranches, The Villa, Springs, Meadows, Al Barsha. I think some older properties, which we haven't looked at, sometimes have a large drive front garden area where a pool has been put in as an afterthought, but they were in older properties.

this is a sad situation OP, sadly like the thread on the old lady in need, the UAE is not a place for welfare, help and sometimes fairness. Sadly us trailing wives have little on our side if we split with our husband and sponsor, and also if our DH's lose their jobs. Unless we can support ourselves and transfer to our own visa. It is one heck of a big thing to worry about for all of us. Sending you positive thoughts

Just wanted to say that technically, driving licenses are not 'exchanged'. I still have both UK and UAE in my possession. The UK license just allows us to obtain a UAE one without the need for any additional driving test. I'm mentioning this to be informative to the OP because she may have seen the word 'exchange' and thought she will have to give up her UK license. but your UK licence is no longer valid in the UK - the DVLA told me this in person, although car hire companies accept it they should not. There are lots of threads on here about it. ETA here are a couple of threads, there are lots more search "DVLA driving" http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=179710 http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=182502 many use their UK licences still but personally I don't want to be the one prosecuted .... you've taken up residency in the UAE so you are no longer resident in the UK even if you have property, pay tax etc etc .... them's the rules whether we like it or not oh and unless in an emergency you should not be using the NHS if you're a British Citizen living as a resident in the UAE. <em>edited by cymraes on 02/08/2012</em>

sorry no great news for you either - we've booked several taxis in advance to collect us from The Villa and they've not turned up .. apparently the job only gets offered to the drivers about 2 hours in advance of the time you want it, I was told by the RTA taxi switchboard that booking in advance was no guarantee that you would get a taxi, what a terrible service and then they charge your for the privilidge of pre booking! How about trying the Marhaba service at the airport I've seen their cars around. Safe travels ....

Just dont go at iftar time. thanks Appletiser, he thought it was all the photo shops - said something about maybe not allowed to take pictures .... then all I heard was white noise!!! ours for a 4 bed at The Villa was a nicely surprising 1,800aed - I thought it'd be over the 2K as we've had it on a lot more, last month it was 1,700aed - this time last year it was 3K-4K as we had grass, which has since been replaced by stone.

Hi all, DH went over to the little photo place in Ranches this afternoon with DS to get some pics for his ID renewal, it was closed. He wondered if it was Dubai wide because of Ramadan ..... don't know how men's brains work sometimes! Anyway, should the photo places be open tomorrow, he needs to go to Al Barsha ID place and Knowledge Village so somewhere those vicinities would be good, thanks in advance

We had our first visit to Gaucho this week, fantastic would highly recommend, prior to that our favourite was Center Cut at the Ritz Carlton DIFC and Seafire. Service and food at Gaucho was faultless. We will be going back.

Thanks Pinks, I did as you said and have a thickish pulp, and still mashing it through the sieve! Have popped it in the pan with some meat, onions, potatoes, stock and daal, with a dollop of rogan josh paste, ground cumin and a sprinkling of kashmir chili powder - smells lovely, going to slow cook for a couple of hours. The tamarind is reminiscent of how a dhansak (ETA it's not pasanda!) smells, will let you know how I get on. DH quite intrigued (however I have the delivery menu at the ready!) I've bought a bagful of pens from either the Camel Company or Al Jaber .... they do ones that look like Emiratis, ladies and men and they do camel ones too, kids and adults love them. In fact the Camel Company do lots of little things that you can just put in the bottom of your case, magnets, pencils, little pads of paper and lovely little camels dressed in kandoras or abayas - my friends love them.

For me the build quality is so poor compared to what I am used to coming from the UK, not sure the villa we live in will still be standing in 15 years! Hence I couldn't invest in property here. You asked if someone was interested in teaching and I am. If you are referring to Msc as an abbreviation, then it is not! It is how it is written, Msc ( master of science is not usually written). I am sure you know that, as you are a teacher:) I guess it is just a misunderstanding. edited by Proudmama012 on 24/07/2012 I think she was referring to the OP I was indeed, sorry ...... oh and I'm not a teacher either ..... too thick when I was younger! But was a proof reader .... congrats on your MSc, if you have a degree then I understand you can do a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) and from that gain Qualified Teacher Status, I know lots who have got into teaching via that route. you could ask your Gifted and Talented co-ordinator at school, if your children are on the G&T programme, the co-ordinators are usually really good at suggesting things. Hope this helps.

I think Hunters at the Westin is great and there are vouchers in the Entertainer, Ruth's Chis seem to be doing lots of deals at the moment both in the Marina and the one at the Monarch (or is that called something else now ... the H?). Asado is lovely and on a cool evening great view of the fountains. Meat Co - very mediocre, but I would rate the Madinat one over the one in Souk al Bahar. Oh and Seafire at Atlantis ... vouchers in fine dining - love it there and the kids get to see the aquarium on the way through (go through the main door and walk to Seafire). For a less fancy atmosphere we've also been to the Grand Grill at the Habtoor, also vouchers in Fine Dining. ETA you can only use a max of 3 or 4 vouchers for each party - check the book, sorry can't put my hand on it at the moment. <em>edited by cymraes on 24/07/2012</em>

Hi DohaHW - I'm up at The Villa, there are lots of threads on here about The Villa, you can do a search. A friend of ours is helping another friend find an A1, 2 or 3 and they're proving to be thin on the ground. They are now going for 145-150,000 A1. You could be lucky and get one that's had it's pool rectified. I see you've joined The Villa forum too, do a search on there for IML and you will see the sorts of problems and the difficulties dealing with getting the pools fixed. Having said that don't let that put you off living up here, we are in our second year here and we absolutely love it. We are going through some major air con issues at the moment, we are dealing with a company called Home Safe who have British managers, who came out today and explained the whole problem and we were able to ask questions that we've never had answers to from other companies. Whilst their workers are not British, we were able to get a straight story from the manager. Our LL doesn't think our AC needs servicing but only annually, it appears that up here in The Villa, Falcon City and Ranches, all of which border onto the desert should have twice a year servicing, as the vents and fans get clocked up with all the dust. Hence why 2 compressors have gone, a coil thingy whatsit and need regassing, the AC units are just being worked at 100% all the time and are just at breaking point. As I tried to explain to the LL, prevention is better than cure, but he's not singing the same tune as me. The Villa is spit into phases, Phase 1 (Ponderosa and most of Aldea) are the most 'finished' with their common areas planted etc, Phase 2 Hacienda and some of Aldea I believe are less developed and we are in Centro, Phase 3 which still has a lot of landscaping to do. I don't know how the prices vary within the Phases as when we first came all A1 were within 125-140 price range and not subject to area. I would go for one with no grass as this is very expensive to maintain (think 5,000aed water bills!) now we have stone our last bill for June was 1300 which is brilliant! My advice would be to glean as much info off EW and The Villa website and then grab a villa as it comes up negotiating a service/maintenance contract and something written into your contract that if the pool is not leak free that you can get sojmething off or your LL will pay to have it fixed (most are now out of the 1 year warranty that Mazaya gave them and to be honest IML who have to contract with Mazaya to fix are rubbish - I could use many other words but I'd get banned for that!) I am lead to believe a full refurbish on the pool could be 12,000AED + depending on the problem. The villas go really fast up here and it appears LLs are sticking to their guns on price. Great list Nyranee - our absolute favourite is to take our guests on a 30 min abra ride up the creek, just hire one for yourselves it's very cheap 50aed if I recall, lovely and it's the thing my parents enjoyed the most ... then a wander up to souk ....

I see you know Suzanne of Reachout, we were briefly involved with Suzanne at Reachout who promised to help, she went on holiday,missed our appointments and she never got back to us, despite us being so eager for her to help, thankfully with hindsight I am glad we did not enter into therapy with her - how can you drop a client who needs help .....
