Mirdif might be a good option, with villas/apartments in your budget. Reasonable commute to Repton and Raffles Hotel ... I'm not sure where DIS is.

Feefmick .... just wanted to say I'm glad you chose the DESS/DESC places over DBS, I am sure you will be pleased with the level of education there and the cost will be worth it. If you decide on Motor City it's less than a 20 min run to DESC, one of DH's colleagues lives there (although with no children) he loves it, he's just renewed for another year. Shakespere Ct I think, lots of shops and food outlets and within good striking distance of MOE and town.

wow OP that's a good price, we paid £3,000 for a full (the smaller sized) container from the UK to Dubai in 2009, that included some of the stuff insured (£250 premium) full pack up and delivery ..... and our cost was by no means the most expensive quote we got.

When DS went to DESC for two years we lived at Al Reem 3 in Ranches, I left the house at 7.15 and had plenty of time to get him there on time (I don't have a car that goes like the wind!), lots of families of DESC/DESS parents live on Ranches. If you want to use the bus service I think they picked up at 0650 from Al Reem 3. I knew lots who did the DESC drop off then down to DESS. We are now up at The Villa and DS is at GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis and it's 8 mins door to door - bliss! I could leave at 7.30 and still get him there for 7.45 registration!

The deal on the Kias is fantastic, let's face it a new car is no investment, and they have come a long way and not the laughable choice they once were. Having been burnt by two second hand cars and their lifespan being very short ... we've decided to trade one of ours in and get a new car. We have a friend who has bought a Sportage and drives to AD daily, he loves it, doesn't have kids so the smaller car works for him. Another friend has the Sorento and again does the AD run, needs the 7 seats for when family come over. DH did the test drive in the CRV today and thought it was a bit wallowy, AC was ok but not brilliant. We are test driving the Sorento next week and will make a point of checking the AC, especially in the back, thanks for that. I really appreciate all your comments. The Sorento appears to be really good value for money and if we get 4-5 years out of it then it will be money well spent, we are tipped towards the Kia at the moment.

thanks AlineJLT, acutally the Sorento is better equipped, DH doesn't like the feel of the RAV4 as he doesn't think it's a solid. Tiguan is a bit smaller again and a lot more money. We've been quoted approx 88K for the Sorento and 114K for the CRV, Sorento deal includes insurance and a really good service deal and more 'bells and whistles' and of course it has the 7 seats, I just want to know if anyone else has made this decision.

quick question, do you want to be near Internet City due to the childrens' school or DH work? I would always live closer to school. I guess Lakes, Meadows and Springs are your best bet for villas near to internet city, there are some villas near Knowlege Vilage I am sure someone can comment on them, as I don't know what they're called or what they're like. ETA - I see you've posted about The Palm, personally I'd avoid it, as I've posted previously when DH first arrived he looked at a Canal Cove villa, very nice, small - but those bumps/humps in and out would have driven us mad, plus they're a fair drive to any school .... and IMHO quite isolated. <em>edited by cymraes on 23/06/2012</em>

.... may not be the quality you're looking for but upstairs at Lulu's in Al Barsha they have lots of little boys' outfits with dickie bows, waitcoats/vets etc, might be worth a look if you're in that area.

Hi Elk1973, in my experience depending on which healthcare company you have this will govern where you can get treatment. Personally we can use The City Hospital, very near to Wafi, we have found them to be fantastic and they have a 24 hour emergency room, our healthcare provider, Daman, cover most things here - although a lot needs pre approval. Each healthcare provider will have a website that lists where you can go, then go to the actual hospital/clinic website to see the services they offer. I spent an afternoon looking at the Daman website and then locating where we could go on the map so that in an emergency I could just get to the right place. As Sanddydogg suggests, it's a good idea to do a dummy run to these places and put them into your satnav. Welcome to Dubai, I've been here for 3 years and the heat and humidity still floor me! Dont' try to be superwoman in the heat x In a big emergency head straight for the Rashid Hospital, on the Oud Metha road, it is very good and equipped for major emergencies. We took DS there 6 weeks after arriving when he suffered a fractured wrist, I can't praise the care we had highly enough. Good luck

.. or perhaps a donation to sponsor a child.. (my daughter bought a goat in an African village for Mother's Day and I thought it was a fabulous present but I know my Mum would have hated that!) It really all depends on the person. I start my new job on Sunday - yippee ..... but on my probationary period all summer so no hols for us - boo. Hopefully have a couple of weekends away with these regional deals, oh no can't do that need to replace DH's gearbox! On the bright side, we like Dubai in the summer, just wish my mum would fly (she's 80 and gets terrible flight anxiety!) and she could come and see us :-) Happy summer to you all :)

The special deals in the supermarkets here are rubbish. I miss the buy two get one free deals and real specials especially on things like washing powder... Muurtje - I don't go often as I don't really like the shop but Hyperpanda in Festival City routinely have good offers on washing powder, I bought a big 7kg of Persil powder last month for I think it was 46AED, I normally buy the 5kg box which is about 50AED, worth swinging by if you're in that vicinity.

It's a while since I've been but The Glasshouse at the Hilton Dubai Creek is really nice, choice of buffet starters then order from the menu ..... and the cheapest (or one of the cheapest) bubbly brunches in Dubai - we had a lovely time and the food was good, not one of these sprawling brunches, so nice if you want a civilised brunch. Hi we moved over in 2009, the container (small one) which I think was 30 sqm(?) was £3,300 from Southampton docks to Dubai, we had the address of our villa already. On top of that there was the insurance costs of about £250, we only insured items that we felt we could not afford to replace, we have some lovely oak furniture which was quite expensive so we insured that, some pictures and a few other pricey items. The company we used were: Excess International Movers 4 Hannah Close Great Central Way London NW10 0UX Tel : +44 (0)20 8324 2057 Fax : +44 (0)20 8324 2048 E-mail : [email protected] Internet:http://www.excess-international.com Pickfords and the other big name companies were a lot more and I don't think they would have done a better job. The co we used were brilliant, not one thing broken. DH's company asked us to get three quotes and we were allowed to choose who we wanted as DH had an allowance for shipping. It took about 5 weeks door to door, depends on which ship it's put on and if it stops on the way, and we had a bit of a delay as it arrived during Ramadan. Hope this helps and gives you an idea.

This practice appears to be common practice, I've had it happen in Spinneys, C4, Lulu etc etc. If I buy a bulk of anything I work out the per item price and compare it to the shelves ... invariably it's more expensive to buy in bulk, I think it's just a way to make a cheap buck. Routinely the tuna is packed into 4's at Spinneys and the price if you divide it is always less for the same individual can. My other gripe is 'special offer' they don't tell you what the price was originally only that it's a 'special offer', grrr - the only way forward it to be savvier than them!

Ive got an email from DVLA too telling me its illegal too I guess i'll try another hire company in the UK Thanks ladies:) We've used our UAE licenses with no problems in the UK with lots of hire car companies, it shouldn't be a problem - Thrifty are good in our experience

has the law changed since last year then?? I am really confused.... I am from the UK and when we go back and hire a car we use our UK driving licence, its even still the old paper one, :) You may still have the licence and use it (lots of hire companies don't actually know the law, which I have checked with the DVLA so know for sure) but it IS illegal ... personally I'm not willing to risk it - here's a really interesting recent thread: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=179710

oh yes and my DH's service number .... although he's been out of the military for 4 years, and every car registration number plates I've had since 1987, oh and all of the car registration number platess my dad had since I was a kid .... but ask me what we had for supper last night - no chance!

Thanks for your swift response Minimax17, gosh it's going to be expensive, I was being conservative and thinking in the region of 6K - hey never rains but it pours! Thanks also for that great piece of advice, we will definitely double check with DEXOL, as the car is a 2006 I am sure if we need a full gearbox, a refub should do the trick, we were thinking we'd hang on to it another year then look for a replacement, not if we've got to fork out 22K though, we'll be driving it for the next 10 years! Much appreciated

Hi all, looks as though DH's beloved Durango has quite a gearbox problem, he can't find on line how much a new one would be - which is worst case scenario .... it's a 2006 model 5.7 Limited. Could anyone give any indication on how much a complete unit might be. The beast is at Dodge at the moment still being checked but they have indicated this is the problem, but holding everything else very close to their chests and said they might not be able to get the parts if they need any! Any idea?

When we stated at DSO we were told that all children should have the DSO backpack only, although some (including DS) take another style - BTW DS' is very plain and black and nothing has been said.

In the UK I can just set it up on my internet banking to pay anyone with the sort code and account number ... thought it would be too easy to actually do - thank you for taking the time to reply :) Guess I'll need to get a cheque from him then and pay in the old fashioned way

thanks, Hatim has given me a number of a guy (Jazer?) who is going to pop round to have a look, thanks for the offer of your DH coming round that's really appreciated, mine's at work (not that he's very technical, he has other talents he tells me!!). We've been having a few problems with the pumps but nothing major until now guess it just needs looking at ... like everything else in the Mazayas, and of course the warranty on the house is up! Still loving living here though :) ETA it's the pressure drum - it's full of water and it should be full of gas, had Al Dammam out, contact given by Hatim of Mazaya, apparently they only last 18 months to 2 years, sadly villa out of warranty, just waiting for LL to give go ahead for replacement. <em>edited by cymraes on 16/06/2012</em>
