Nice of you to post cymraes so you make more people aware. When ID cards were first introduced (3 odd ago??) I registered my child. All you had to do at that time was fill out a form for them. And it was only about 6 months ago that I found out rules have changed for kids under 15 (I personally do not think there was enough public info available for this particular rule change) I went to register my child last month and it was a very quick and easy process but it did cost 270 AED! Thank you TSmith99 and SEY83 for your posts, it hasn't occurred to me to check the EID website as mine and DH's visas and ID cards are still valid for a while yet, I heard the information for the first time about children under 15 on the radio this morning, and as I'd registered DS two years ago I thought I would only have to do something about his ID card when he reached 15, another year from now. I have called a few friends this morning with under 15's and they are also totally unaware of this requirement - so it appears that the message is just not out there, we all read the papers and listen to the news and I haven't seen any campaigns about it on advertising boards etc. So it seems that not too many people are actually aware. That's the good thing about EW, sharing info we've heard, hence why I posted it - better to share than to keep it to oneself eh?

Thanks all for your advice, how were they going to let us know? DS is registered on their system but we have not been informed by the EIDA that we need to get him a card, so the only way I've heard about it is through word of mouth, not even my DH's company have issued any advice .... Why should I be so surprised. Most of my friends are unaware to this need to get a card for their children, as I've experienced this morning following my telling them!

Personally I was a busy full time working mum when DS was little so just made one meal and then seasoned it for the adults before serving, that's what worked for me, but AK does have some good recipes and they do make food fun for kids, especially if you have fussy eaters.

Thanks BB2, it's the rules on under 15's that have changed, each child now has to have an ID card - just thought I'd bring it to peoples' attention :)

Just heard this on the radio, executive from the EID was being interviewed, so a quick post before the school run. All children holding a passport in the UAE will need a physical EID card by October this year, if their visa runs out in 2012 you can apply for the card at the time of renewal: http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/emirates-id-card-alert-for-children We had registered DS when we got ours, but it now appears that he needs the actual card. <em>edited by cymraes on 29/05/2012</em>

I had a lovely lesson at Bobbi Brown at Mirdif, I learnt a lot ... I think the girl I saw was Noor, she was very good with a mid 40's in a make up rut (ie slick of mascara and lippy!!)

when DS was that age (now a strapping 14) I used to make batches of home made chicken and fish goujons, served with baked wedges and cucumber, carrot sticks. We used to make dip made up of ketchup and mayo which he loved and still does. He used to like macaroni cheese too, put some nutmeg in the sauce instead of salt, with chicken or ham strips (I used to boil this myself with no salt). Baked potato with cheese and beans. He liked toast and home made chicken and sweetcorn soup too. I just used to make grown up stuff and watch the salt and seasoning. Sheperds pie, little individual ones made in a cupcake pan and frozen and popped in the micro once defrosted. Egg and soldiers ... although he wasn't keen. Eggy bread (savoury french toast) quick and easy with home made tomato sauce with (hidden) veg in the sauce! Lots of easy options, he liked a dish I made with chicken and pineapple with tinned tomatoes cooked slowly and a bit of rice too. I just made what we were having and watched the seasoning and froze in small batches. Hope this helps x

I'm of the "clunk click with every trip generation", so there's never been any question of not having proper belts/seats used in our cars. I was just thinking, though, Redlesley, that you really must have pitched your presentation perfectly to have had such a positive effect on Irooni's (and presumably many other) children. I too can't find my beloved Robinsons Lemon Barley in the sort of triangular bottle, DS not bothered and drinks water but my 45 year old body (with two tooth fillings, one caused by brace abrasion!) needs some Robinsons. The Waitrose high juice is quite good (they do sugar free) and they sell that at Spinneys ... my favourite flavour is pink grapefruit. Keep us posted Robinsons fans!

Hi there, I am not sure if you'd be interested or what the salary/opportunities are like but there was a big poster in Ikea this week recruiting staff. I would guess that there would be a lot of visual merchandising there .... I know this is probably not the level of role you are looking for but often it's easier to get a job when you've got a job, so it could be a stepping stone, and it may not mean that you are on the shop floor. I've noticed that the higher end furniture shops in Dubai (well I'm talking Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn) seem to have western staff, maybe worth approaching the companies that run those? I agree with Louisedvs a lot of jobs here are on a knowing someone basis. Come to think of it I think Lime Tree Cafe were looking for marketing people recently, the advert was on the EW jobs page, might be worth trawlling back on that one and making an enquiry? They're quite a dynamic company by all accounts. Good luck, I found my job on EW :-)

Riemann P20, used it on DS who is a pale redhead, since he was 2, he's now 14 and never been burned here or elsewhere. Easy to apply once in the morning, no residue on the skin. You can get it via Amazon, or some pharmacies, and at the airport in the UK - however I haven't seen it for sale here. Incredible stuff! Thanks again Hilsbils, went to the Police Station at the Port - very easy to find - exactly opposite the dry docs yellow crane on the Jumeira Beach Road, lots of parking, in and out in 15 mins and pick up the document in three days 120AED. Much appreciated Hilsbils x

I agree with emlsnre, if I'm going to Ranches/Al Barsha/AD I go through the Al Ain exit on to the 66 then on to the 611 bypass road, very quiet and quick. And then home on the 311 taking the Al Ain entrace back off the 66 (as we live in Centro) it's much quicker. BTW when I went out this morning they were tweeking the barrier on the access onto the 66 and brushing down the road (not from an accident I hasten to add!) so looks like they may be starting work on it ... I also saw an RTA car and another car parked there on Thursday, they were taking pictures, and had one of those measuring thingies, all the guys had RTA high visibility jackets on - fingers crossed work will start soon.

Choithrams is expensive if you do all your shopping there, worth doing a big C4 shop once a month for basics like tins, rice, pasta and household stuff like toilet rolls and washing powder. I do this and supplement with Spinneys as its closer to me and it works out a lot cheaper

Lol and us 50 minutes ago still not here ! Ours took about 45 mins .... salvation, or was it salivation- it wasn't that good but it never is unless you get it straight over the counter. I believe all landlords are responsible for this. When we lived at Ranches LL paid and now we are at The Villa our current LL pays that, we are responsible for paying the rent and bills (DEWA/DU etc). It will say in the tenancy contract of the property you lease out (I hope), it has always done in ours. <em>edited by cymraes on 25/05/2012</em>

Just to say living in Skycourt appartments is quite different to The Villa which are individual villas. I would start a separate thread for info on Skycourt if that's where you are thinking of living. Skycourt have a good supermarket/food outlets/laundry.

Which part Of Dubailand? Arabian Ranches/Falcon City/The Villa//Layan/Al Waha they are all different. We have lived in Ranches and The Villa loved both and only 15 mins drive to the big malls from either if those. Are you new to Dubai? See you say The Villa, we love it - big Spinneys at silicon oasis and 15 mins to Mirdif City Centre and Dubai Mall, best move we made <em>edited by cymraes on 24/05/2012</em>

I had some ironing done this week by Aziz Ullah Laundry from International City - 44 items for 77AED, they picked up 4pm Tuesday and delivered 4pm Wednesday, very happy. 055 151 0062. They do dry cleaning and laundry too. Foodwise, we've had Zafran Curry from Mirdif, they also delivery Carluccios and Mango Tree Bistro. We've had NKD Pizza, Toast and Grill. Friends use KFC, Pizza Hut and Lucky's pizza (from Motor City). I don't know of pharmacies that deliver as there isn't one at Sky Court Towers. Hope this helps

sorry but a 14 year old teen with 2 children under 5 to look after :\: I do have to agree with Mushypeas, whilst she may be responsible and have first aid training it is still very young to be alone in a house especially with two young children. DH and I have only just started leaving DS, who is a sensible 14, for short periods on his own at home, and then only with multiple emergency numbers he can call, and a notified neighbour.

yes I've experienced the Dubai bashing when I visit the UK, so I just remind people that my average water and electricity bill [b'>per month[/b'> is over £300, a glass of mediocre wine out in a bar is £7, and a take away can average £40, that's where our money goes. I tell them the only thing I find cheaper is domestic help and petrol. I could start on the UK bashing while I'm there, but they don't really need to hear that do they?

In three years we have had Daman twice and Green Crescent (not so good!) once, now back with Daman and we can use City Hospital which I highly rate, and EHL clinics at Ranches and Dubai Mall. They have always been ok, sometimes I've had to pay up front for vaccinations etc for DS but they did reimburse, and they approved several expensive tests for DS too at The City. Colleagues of DH have had numerous amounts of great care using them.

I used vision direct.co.uk not so long ago - shipping was free to Dubai. Pretty decent service and lenses were here in a week even though I purchased the lenses on Good Friday during the Easter holidays. Thanks for that Samdhi

Hi all, just wanted up to date info on where is best to get lenses from. I've just bought my first lenses here and realised that I can get them much cheaper on line and to S&S them from the UK. Almost half the price of the ones I've just bought. I have been prescribed Acuvue Oasys for astigmatism lenses and wondered if anyone had a good recommendation of where to purchase. Thanks in advance.

Glasshouse at the Dubai Hilton Creek is nice, not fancy but food is nice and there is a 2-1 voucher in this week's Time Out (with the lobster on the front). Celcius is low key, haven't been for a long time but good value. Friends of ours say the best one is at the Ibn Battuta Hotel, can't remember the name of the restaurant but it's excellent value and they have entertainment for the kids. Hope this helps.

I swear the next time I have one of these calls I will say: caller: hello me: hello caller: hello ma'am how are you today me: well I'm glad you called because I'm terrible actually, I've had a sh&t day and I am now on my second bottle of wine, and you know I have no money, my kids are so naughty and I am feeling like ending it all caller: good ma'am ...... Guess they will have heard it all before or not be listening, which is probably the truth .... worth a try. An old work colleague of mine used to get lots of new kitchen/double glazing people calling her all the time, in the end she told them her husband was in prison and she had no money! Bless him, he worked for BA and was as happy as larry!

If you fly DXB to Manchester there is a convenient train from Manchester International train station to Liverpool. If you fly into Heathrow it's a long way into London with luggage to transfer to the train (at least an hour) Personally I would fly DXB to Amsterdam then fly AMS to Liverpool. Otherwise fly into Manchester or Birmingham (about an hour by train) which are convenient for rail travel. Heathrow is a long way out of central London for train connections.
