The is also afternoon tea at Atlantis in the book - Plato's in the foyer - good views of the palm from there. Friday and Saturday they have a Harpist playing and do a Honey Tea (honey fountain instead of chocolate fountain). There is also a voucher for the Hilton at JBR for a choclate afternoon tea. thanks all, I have both the family and fine dining entertainer. Going to give her the resident's tour of Dubai, she wants to see the big hotels (we used to work on big events together in the UK) so my route will take in Madinat, Palm and the Marina ... thanks for the tea suggestion already. She is staying downtown near the Burj so quite a good location to see everything. Thanks again all for your suggestions :-)

Had labyrinthitis (sp) many years ago similar symptoms, couldn't move at all without feeling dizzy and nauseous, doctor gave me motion sickness tablets, took a few weeks to get over, had to lie down most if the time (Wimbledon was on and I couldn't even watch that!) perhaps ask doctor about it again, I just googled vertigo and thereare some self help suggestions. If you do a search for JVT on here there have been tons of threads on it already :) As the search needs 4 characters search 'JVT DEWA'. Yes lots of threads. I don't live there but had a look with a friend at the 3 storey townhouses (4 bed) thought the living area was tiny to service 4 bedrooms, but those stairs would give you a great work out if you're like me and have a habit of leaving stuff upstairs. Just to add, we live up at The Villa, no community facilities (pools, shops) yet over 12 months in, it will be at least another 9 months, can be frustrating but if you do love your home and can live without them, don't let that put you off too much. Yes it was cinnamon and honey in 'tea' water which I guess was hot water unless anyone can correct me? Off to search it out ... Just copies it so thanks to the OP of that honey and cinnamon did the trick for my DH... CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day, any Chronic cholesterol is cured. As per information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol. Please check with your doctor first just in case... but we looked online when we heard this about honey and cinnamon story and there were so many sites that said the same thing he tried it and it worked! <em>edited by cymraes on 17/02/2012</em>

LOL!! How many women on here do you think clean their own cookers ?? Just kidding :) I usually use jif (cif) cream or Mr Muscle kitchen spray.. I'm too embarrassed to get someone else to do it! I use Oven Mate from Lakeland, brilliant, slap it on leave for a few hours and wipe off believe me it's the only thing to clean the 'black hole'! And I must get some more

Hi OP, Dubai is wonderful but I would be extremely cautious. Search on here for 'move to dubai' etc for lots of useful information. Below I've posted a recent thread that people commented on how much salary you would need to make to cover expenses/living etc - it's not a step to take lightly and I would not make the move without a secure job. From personal experience we had a pot of several thousand UK pounds behind us and we don't have much of it left .... lots of up front costs and schooling is expensive for Western education schools. I have looked at jobs on www.gulftalent.ae may not be in your sector but it's a starting point. thanks all, DS said he wanted to go to Grand Grill for ribs (can't give us a table before 9.30 so non starter!), DH decided then he def wanted a steak so we're booked to go to Prime at The Meydan, of course with Entertainer vouchers ... will let you know how we get on, plus it's only 10 mins from home! yes we had to give a copy for our alc licence and also for renewal of our PO box, they seem to ask for it as another proof of residency - think you may need to speak to RERA Best of luck

Oh thanks Sue62 I'd forgotten how much I loathed the webcams, never a good time as you say it's never convenient no matter how much you miss and love them! Used to dread it ringing during dinner/cooking/homework/a good film or especially when you were knackered from being superwoman! DH was in the forces for over 20 years, he spent periods of 4 months away, then he was away Mon-Fri for 18 months, the reason he left the forces was that we couldn't carry on like that. One of the worst periods was the 3 months he first came to Dubai and I carried on back home sorting the house out, organising the move and still working. We have a very strong marriage of 23 years, a child of 13 and being apart was the hardest thing ever. Think very long and hard about being away from your husband. I am a strong and independent individual but living apart was the hardest thing we ever did. Even with Dubai's stresses and strains, it would be the last thing I did, to be separated again. Believe me it's hard, even if your maternal/paternal family are close by I know from experience that kids need their dads.

there's been lots of amazing kale recently at ripe's food & craft market at dubai garden centre. saturdays 9.30 - 13.00. you can order online too and have their boxes of organic, local and seasonal fresh veg delivered to you. becky who started the company brought kale over from oz and has had it all grown on a farm here in the uae. tastes delish!! oooh do you have an email contact for Ripe Food and Crafts? DH and DS loooove, poor DH hasn't had it for nearly 2 years and is salivating at the idea!

I posted earlier about an old work colleague coming to town for the weekend, thank you all who suggested places to take her. Thought I might take her to tea (nothing wallet busting!) had a quick scan through the Entertainer last night but didn't spot any vouchers (maybe because I'd had a couple of glasses of bubbly!). Anywhere in the Entertainer for tea ... pref with a nice Dubai view. Thanks as always :-)

got some nice things for DS aged nearly 14 at Aeropostale - he's got short legs but they do long legs and they have good offers buy 2 get 3rd free or reduced. Also if you have time the Gap/Banana Republic outlet in Outlet Mall has some great bargains, but it can be a bit hit and miss so don't go especially for that! I find Gap at full price a bit over the top as he's not a fashion conscious soul ... H&M also good value

Thank you for your suggestions .. Great :-) DH suggested the Madinat, and we went to Jum Saray the other week for brunch, yum! Nice terrace so will put that in the short list. Any nice places for afternoon tea with a view? Oh and not a too hefty price tag, anywhere that takes entertainer vouchers for tea?

We had DS vaccinated for Heps/Tetanus booster/BGC done on Daman last year ... I had to pay, but we claimed it back via Daman. I thought they were particularly rubbish but they came up trumps that time. My current gripe is that our Silver cover doesn't seem to cover gynae - need to do PAP next year and probably need to think about a mamogram too, that's also what I consider preventative care. <em>edited by cymraes on 12/02/2012</em>

Just to clarify a point: if you are going into your, say, third year in the property with no rent increase between years 1 and 2 as per the RERA regulations, is the landlord still capped to raising your rent by only 5%? That's the one thing I can't figure out as as people have said rental raises are capped at only 5% per year and yet other people have paid more than a 5% increase. As far as I read they can the increase can be within 25% of the rental index. Excuse my naivety but does that mean I could expect a hike of up to 25% going into my third year? Or I could pay up to the max in my rental bracket - thanks again :-)

Thanks ps we're going into our second year ... as previously posted we paid 135k 2001-2012, LL said he'd had offers for 150-155K but would we be able to pay 145K, or pay 135K like last year, I think he was just trying it on - we said that we'd pay the same as last year as per the RERA guidelines and he just said ok!, thank Crunchie for EW! <em>edited by cymraes on 12/02/2012</em>

Sadly no market here in the villa, there is a supermarket Thomsun at Skycourt towers adjacent to the Al Ain road, I go to Spinneys Silicon Oasis 7 min drive (big fab one at Cedre villas or smaller by Semmer villas) or for a big shop c4 at Mirdif. isn't a spinneys due to open in the villa soon though? those were the rumors last year... No work started although more positive chatter, even if they started today could be this time next year!

Do you mean Quouz (sp) park next to Dubai Little League base ball fields, if so from the Al Khail road (44) take the Nad al Sheba/safa/wasl exit go for for Nad al Shiba/Meydan, just after the clover leaf it's on your right next to the baseball fields (they have advertising boards for Subway/Pepsi/Chevrolet). You can also get to it from the 66 come off for Meydan/Nad al Sheba/wasl/safa follow road all the way to the al Khail then double back over the clover leaf ... Then on your right.

Love The Villa, still have a leaking pool but you'd have to drag me out kicking and screaming - we're in an A1 love the space just renewed for next year @ 135 (no increase, no argument) we're in Centro the most unfinished. So convenient location wise, just need a rec for good Chinese and curry delivery!

Can you hire an indoor skip, think I may need one for all DH's cr@p! ETA his favourite saying is "well I left it on the dining table/side in the kitchen" even if it was 3 weeks ago he still expects things to be where he left them .... But not his clothes! Had the same 'discussion' with DH this week, I sounded like my mother (g0d bless her) by saying "this isnt a hotel you know, and if you think it is, I will prepare your bill!"

NN - just a word of caution, you may get cheap insurance but please be careful reading the small print, you may find that they will not cover pre existing conditions or the amount of cover is not enough. There was a recent thread, which many including myself commented on, yes it can cost a lot of money but what would the costs be if they were not correctly covered? It can run in to tens of thousands of dirhams. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=171249 My parents took out insurance with Lloyds Bank travel insurance, paid the high price but were covered for everything - repatriation if sick, and even if the worst happened. Things are cheap for a reason, I just would hate for you not to be informed. Good luck and do let us all know if you get a great price that includes pre existing conditions and repatriation.

Lulu or Co-op... much fresher fruit & veg. I can get a weeks shop for the price of 4 carrier bags in Spinneys :\: Absolutely agree, DH did a quick calculation of the finances last month and said that my bits and pieces shopping on my card at Spinneys was shocking - he's not one to cut corners at all but he was horrified on how much I was spending on just popping in for a few bits every couple of days. I now no longer use my card at Spinneys and only spend cash so I can see where it's going .... and now only buy bread, p0rk and very few emergency items. It has dramatically reduced our spending. I go to Lulu's once a month for a big household shop (toiletries, household stuff and cupboard groceries) and pick up veg and milk normally at C4 or rarely Spinneys. C4 have some good meat on bulk buy and I buy frozen p0rk at Park and Shop when I'm passing which I think is a better price and quality than Spinneys.

I think it's only doable if your housing allowance is on top of this amount. You would need to negotiate at least 130,000K for housing in my opinion, plus you will need 5% deposit up front on all properties, in cash or available money. And as others have also mentioned there are lots of set up costs/deposits to pay when you get here. We came here with everything clear and a lump sum that we just shot through with deposits etc in the first few months. As someone has mentioned some companies say they will pay x% towards school fees but some do cap it - in our case we have a figure which they will contribute to every year for up to 3 children, however it is just under half what our school fees actually are. School also require you to pay a deposit/registration fee and all fees for the next term are payable in advance, no monthly payments - well not that I've experienced. Good luck with your decision, Dubai is a wonderful place to live but it is very expensive and one should never borrow to be able to live here, far too dangerous! My parents (80s good health) my grandmother in law (nearly 90) and father in law (65 but has had a stroke) have all paid via the UK. Parents and FinL got it through Lloyds bank, it was about £200 each, grandmother in law via Saga about £300,.... try Helped the Aged they also advise on insurance. In my own opinion you really should not let them leave home without it, I just think of the worst case scenario ... it could cost you absolutely thousands. HTH

we got a lovely huge sofa and huge chair from Freedom Furniture in Mirdif, in last year's sale. Nice quality and great prices .... in the sale! It's an Australian (I think!) store so not too many gaudy things in there ... if that's what you like?

Am always disappointed when you go out for Valentines .... hiked up prices, great expectations etc I'm either going to have a nice dinner cooked by one of us (hopefully DH!) although in the previous two years DS has cooked (now aged 13) and served it all for us all posh and had his in the kitchen, bless. Or I will order a nice take away and get a bottle of bubbly. Can't be too much wrong with my plan as we've been married 23 years :-)

I used to work with a paediatric dentist and he always said to wean babies off the bottle asap as the way in which the liquid stays and pools in the mouth and squirts all over the inside of the mouth is much worse than drinking it out of a cup. He used to wince when he saw anything but milk or water in a babies bottle. But I guess that's down to good oral health education .....
