if you go to the main gate they can give you a map ... they do it with some taxi drivers so they should have plenty of copies. Cordobas are a type of villa (like Marbella, Granadas etc at the Villa), the RK will denote the sub sector it's in, the sectors are grouped into: Ponderosa, Aldea, Hacienda, Centro, I think that's all of them - just in case you didn't know. I asked my dentist, Dr Evan at Dubai London Clinic, about adult braces and he suggested the Emirates/Dubai University Dental/Orthodontic School (not sure if that's the right combo of names, as I've misplaced the piece of paper) all the trainees are qualified dentists moving on to orthodontics, the professors are all western trained apparently, and he would highly recommend them at about half the cost of regular braces for adults, I seem to recall that he said it would be in the region of 12-15,000AED if done there. Someone on here may have the correct details! Sorry to be vague!!

Have to agree with the majority, since DS came along always had friends over for a slap up BBQ, few bubbles (maybe pass on this if your pregnant!) and own fireworks (when in the UK) always had a lovely evening. If you don't fancy cooking how about ordering a lovely dinner for delivery. Personally on the few occasions we've been out on NYE it's been a bit if an anti climax, but we've always had a food evening at home. we also have a PO box at Ranches, although we've moved up to The Villa since March. Wish I just could renew there it would be a lot less hassle. Am going tomorrow hopefully to Jumeira post office to see what my options are about swapping to another PO box near to The Villa - will try to update on progress. Now all I need to do is find the PO box paperwork!!!! I've put it somewhere safe!

I've paid cheques in before at the four letter bank via the ATM, it gives you the option of a printed receipt which is actually a facsimile of the cheque you've paid in - we had a cheque bounce after paying in and the bank asked us for this receipt to help sort it out.

no can't find vanilla extract, the real thing, anywhere, have to bring supplies back from the UK when I go. I am going to check out Lakeland as they used to sell it there in the UK, but I seem to recall like another poster has said it's something to do with alcohol content. Dessicated coconut - I got some a while back in Lulu in a bag, Gyma brand. But this week I needed more and have only been able to get Gyma coconut powder, although it's quite coarse. I use it for biscuits and putting into curry etc. It's so frustrating, one minute you can get something the other, then poof it's gone forever! Good luck :-)

I am at The Villa, and really I should be recycling but don't want to have to schlep stuff halfway across town to recycle it. I am at The Villa (Centro), where is the nearest place with recycling bins, I've seen the clothing ones in Ponderosa near the main gate, but nothing else as I usually use the Al Ain entrance in and out. I know there are some at Ranches, but it's a 40 min round trip! Anything up at Silicon that I can access? edited for poor spelling! <em>edited by cymraes on 02/12/2011</em>

Eli we too are at The Villa, we're due to renew/renegotiate at the end of the month. Our LL will want top whack, he was bargained down 10k last year (but upped the deposit!) I have dropped RERA a note in advance to find out what the going rate is for our property so I am forearmed (the rent calculator web page is down). He is not a helpful LL so the only comfort I can take is that he has a whacking great mortgage which I dont think the rent by no means covers, we've only seen him twice and all he says us how expensive the house was! Oh and it's steadily falling apart, another reason why I'd never buy here. Good luck all in you upcoming rentals edited by cymraes on 01/12/2011 Hi cymraes..I remember we were bothn house hounting at the sare time last year and unfortunatelly it almost sounds like we have the same landlord! Just like everybody else we had issues with our ac and the pool and the only thing I ever heard from him is : " POOR ME, i paid so much for the villa and this is what I get!!" I have contacted RERA and the 2012 index is not out yet. However, the price they had for 2011 for The Villa was 170. I pay 140 so according to this index, he cannot increase the rent. I also called few agents today and they all said the pices will only increase from now on at the villa so maybe we should stay put and fight it with RERA..what are you going to do if he asks for an increase? I think, but not sure, if they want to they can only charge 5% more for the rent next period, or not sure if they can't up it after the first year, I need to get written conf from RERA. We paid 135 last March in one cheque and if pushed would go to 140 (which is about 5%) but don't want to pay more. We'd have to pay for all the removals/deposit again and I really can't face moving just after 12 months. I know he's going to be sticky about repaying the deposit which he upped from 5K to 10K, there is no damage etc but the grass is looking very sad (because of 5k DEWA bills we're watering at a minimum), I feel your pain .... if he asks for an increase I will tell him I need to speak to RERA and hopefully that will sort it out, I don't think he can throw us out unless he is moving in. But it's not a nice LL/tennant situation is is?

CP, Shella and Assisi, thoughts are with you - would be/will be devastated when poochie's time comes ... he is like our baby. Again I have no regrets about bringing him over to Dubai, he's our boy and we love him, he loves being at home with us and really does believe he's DS number two. It would break my heart to leave him back in the UK and I would be the one to pine. He's adjusted so well here (collie/retreiver cross) we have him cut short now, and is loving this time of year just in and out of the garden. My parents miss him so much, he has to 'talk' to them on the webcam each time they call! Again my deepest thoughts are with you on your sad loss. Thanks. Affected us more so because our friends little bratty 5 year old thought it would be fun to let our dog run out onto the main road!!! First day of his holiday and we had 2 weeks of them. Gave him the benifit of the doubt that it was an accident (despite 2 locks on the gate), however he proved himself to be a little terror the whole time winding my DD's up and denying it! According to my husband I was basically pushing them out the door the day they were leaving! Taking comfort in the fact it was instant but still can't get the moment out of my head! Needless to say my friend is not welcome again!! Gosh that's terrible! I have a friend with a 'difficult' child, I have put up with him for 13 years .... he does everything to wind up DS and always doing things to get him into trouble (and of course his parents side with him), I make sure he's never alone with Poochie - he's just got a bad streak in him. I end up taking mu frustration out on DS (13 and who is no angel) and I know it's not fair, thankfully I've only seen him once in nearly 3 years here in Dubai, I love his parents dearly but he's just a bad egg. My deepest sympathy to you Shella x

Another expat dog here at The Villa, not for one moment have we regretted bringing Poochie from the UK, ok it's hot in the summer but he's our dog, we love him and he loves us. We have a Poochie fund for when (or if) we go back to the UK. Our family at home really miss him but he's having a wonderful life, don't give it another thought bring them over!

you could try the hotels for a big ham lots of threads on here for places that do cooked meat, or Park and Shop on the Al Wasl Road you can get one to cook there, ours was delicious last year - you order whichever size you want. Not sure if they do cooked ones too. Have you tried to google the Delia recipe, sorry I don't have that book to help you out.

if this applies to Dubai as well, then now I know where all that money is going from my grossly inflated DEWA bill and minimal service! Sadly DH's expat package has been altered, same money ... but readjusted benefits which means we will lose out in the long run .... hey guess I shouldn't complain ... could be in the UK!!! One thing to think about is that some expats (DH and his colleagues) are actually doing a good days work helping keep the UAE infrastructure going! <em>edited by cymraes on 30/11/2011</em>

ooh good call Yorky, did I hear someone had vouchers or there was a deal, that would be fab! There was a thread on here last week I think. If I remember correctly starters are 70 Dhs, mains 100 Dhs and deserts 55 Dhs? There are vouchers in next years entertainer books. Best get new book and go for our wedding anniversary in Jan! But will look into the prices you quote that sounds really good!

I second Table 9, but also really rate Assado, outside seating full view on Burj Khalifa! Amazing, one condition, should like meat! will look into Table 9, yes Assado is fab and we love meat ... was a bit pricey though!

um yes! Just fixed it ..... I removed the water in pipes checked and there was sandy stony debris in the filter (v small filter) in the inlet - flushed the stones/sand out and bingo working! I tell you DH doesn't realise the magnitude of my talents .....!

Fantastic, thanks a lot to all of you!!! I love to see what everyone cook, it gives me a lot of ideas. Cymraes, would you mind sharing your recipe for prawn cocktail and sauce? Hydepark, can I have the one for the pudding pear tartlets? Kaussie, your steamed white fish seems lovely, can u share the recipe? Bnbh, how do you do the Eton mess? And yes, the foolproof Nasi goreng recipe would be nice. Thanks again so much!!! My prawn cocktail sauce is not an exact science, my mother didn't cook that way LOL! I take about 2 well heaped serving spoons of good quality mayo, good squirt of ketchup, same of tomato puree, dash of worcestershire sauce, 1/2 capfull of sherry, splash of tabasco, end of a teaspoon of sugar - beat up and just taste. DH and DS love it quite spicy so I then adjust to our taste - mayo to make it milder, sauce to make it deeper, tabasco/worcester to make it more spicy! A friend of mine puts horseraddish cream in hers and they call it Vegas sauce. DH and I have it on prawns, layered with iceberg, about 3 layers (prawns, sauce, lettuce, sauce, prawns, sauce, lettuce) and served with a wedge of lemon and nice brown bread, DS has it with sliced gammon h@m .... it's a bit of a throw together but very yummy! My mum has been making it this way for 55 years, and my dad's still lapping it up. Hope that helps x

Just got mine form the US and my CC bill says 2668aed. Better buying abroad. Its unlocked and had to get a micro sim here for 25aed. DH seriously thinking about ordering one from the US, where is the best place? He's only checked out Amazon (we are Brits so not sure where might sell them unlocked from the UK) Thanks for your help

Beef paste, sandwich spread or luncheon meat sandwich on White bread (crusts cut off!), flask of warm orange squash, home made cake or blue ribband biscuit and a piece of fruit that travelled back and forwards all week!

Sorry to hear you've not had a good day Cymrae :( Funnily enough, its our 10th wedding anniversary today - yay for us! We are Scottish and got married in a beautiful castle - very romantic! Pretty chilly though in November so we had mulled wine, followed by champagne and then when everyone was suitably 'warmed up, we had smoked salmon, haggis, roast beef with all the trimmings and cranachan! Very yummy :) Congrats or as we say in Welsh llongyfarchiadau!

Someone posted the butterball.com website here yesterday ... It says there that apparently you can defrost a small one about 6 lb in 8 hours via the water defrost method (pls check) not sure if that gives you enough time for dinner though!

I seem to recall that GEMS schools run these ... maybe just for parents, but worth a phone call to any of the schools - I got something at the start of term but sadly I've deleted it. They do all kinds of computer courses for parents ... just a thought ETA a friend learnt to touch type with a Mavis Beacon course, she was really successful with it. http://www.mavisbeacon.com/ they sell the courses on Amazon too. Another thumbs up for the Kenwood, my little Kenwood hand minimix (nice early 80s brown and beige) is going strong, use it all the time .... as I have for the past 30 years plus! My dad bought it for me for my 11th birthday :-) Hoping to upgrade this Christmas to a stand mixer ... but the minimix does the job for everyday cakes and whipping etc.

How about The Observatory (52nd floor?) at Marriott harbour in the Marina, great view and a good deal if you have the Time Out city card, think it's 15% off food and drinks with the card. Ok not in the same league as Burj al Arab but still a good night out.
