am currently in the UK on holiday, been here nearly 3 weeks, done all the family both sides and can't wait to get back home to Dubai - I do miss my UK family but that flight on Wed can't come soon enough, miss DH and poochie far too much even DS is ready to come home, only thing is that MinL just anounced she is coming for Christmas ........ for 29 days!

Emax have a good selection of all appliances, in Mirdif. I have a Scholtes ceramic hob and electric oven, love it after my horrid fully gas Siemens one, I think it was about 3400 AED from Plug Ins in the sale in March. In my opinion worth it, a plus is that although a little narrower on the inside you can have two shelves in the oven, which for me is a bonus and I can get a full roast and all the trimings in. Thought I wouldn't get on with the ceramic hob but it's great and cleans up a dream. The manual is pretty rubbish but we've worked out how to use it! Hope this helps.

Remembered this thread from last year. Saw something similar in Spinneys today, either an orange carrot tub or also comes in a red tub too, tan enhancer 79dhs .... Any one tried it, quite fancy giving it a go! Sorry can't remember the name!

We got a great sofa and chair from Freedom furniture in Mirdif, it was in the sale and 50% off they had some nice stuff in which was not 'Dubai glitzy'. I seem to recall someone saying something about a place in Al Quoz which was really good ... will have a hunt on the board just now (sure beats doing the ironing!) To be honest even if you did get them out the likelihood is they wouldnt be able to fix your problem anyway. The ones that have been to us are at best just handymen and not particularly good ones. Good to know JF will work without contract..... exactly emlsnre .... hence the plumber coming to fix the gate (although it's quite a Dubai phenomenon getting the right 'tradesman' - term used loosely, to do a job well!), well guess it's time to engage with the LL - that'll be fun! Hi fairycakeyumm - I am still waiting for Mazaya (Tobias) to send someone to finish off the snagging it's getting silly now too here! DH is livid, I can't get Tobias to give me a name/number of anyone to help. I've sent two emails to Mazaya and haven't heard anything back - we love the house, LL it a little distant I have to say, so we are loathe to get stuff fixed and for him not to reimburse. As our property is still under warranty Mazaya should be fixing it for free - grr! We want to stay on The Villa (all those reading this who are contemplating a move, it's a great place to live, but as with all new properties there are always some little things that need fixing) and will need to have a concrete maintenence agreement in place if we renew on this particular property, or we would be happy to move to another Villa property. Thanks again FCY for your tip, I've heard good things about Jim'll Fix It too. Hope all your stuff gets fixed without too much hassle.

I am having difficulty getting Mazaya to come out and sort the few small snagging issues I have with my house, it is a rental but our LL doesn't get things done, and basically happy to take our cheque and then not respond to emails!! I have since March submitted several times a list of the problems, only for them either to send the wrong workman (plumber to fix the gate!) and then empty promises that someone will come and look at the problems. I am now told that my contact (Tobias) is no longer working on this project but I can't seem to get anyone else to respond - any ideas? Tobias says he will pass on my problems but I hear nothing. Thanks in advance, am getting very annoyed!

thanks Kavsmum, I'm looking for why they would do it and what's the value of doing it, is it just to test to see what is a base line and what they could use it for, and what the score would tell the therapist. DS had the test this morning and scored 95%, apparently showing a high score for vocab and understanding of language but wondered to what use it would be put. My understanding was that it showed that he had no language difficulties and his language and understanding was very mature. thanks again for your post.

When I worked in communications we went directly to our internal and external customers to ask how we could improve .... just a thought - any jobs going EW??

DVLA told me last year, and I have commented before about it, that although you still have your UK licence and a home in the UK if you are resident in the UAE (ie resident visa for UAE) you should not use your UK licence, which should be surrendered when you get your UAE one, although we all know we don't do it. Many rental and insurance companies do not understand because as you are a UK citizen and you have a UK passport - apparently you could come a cropper if you have an accident and you have to claim then your resident 'status' will/may be revealed and you will not be covered, personally I am not going to trust that I am covered if I don't know 100% for sure I am. I am only quoting what the DVLA told me last year. We've always hired a prepaid car with our UAE driving licences in the UK with Thrifty, great prices and great cars with regular upgrades. just a word of advice, our container arrived one day and it took nearly 8 days to release it from customs at Jebel Ali and for it to be delivered to us at Ranches, I do hope you don't have to wait for yours - but just thought I'd warn you. :-)

Hi, Le Marche on Ranches should be open as normal 0730-2200 and they also have a hot food counter and do pizzas at the bakery, Pizza Hut, Costas and Burger King will be open I think during the day - only you can't sit in an eat, but Costas do have screens up so you can eat and drink there. Up at Motor City there should be plentyof take away stuff open plus the Spinneys will be open, again with a hot food counter/salad bar etc. Good luck and welcome

call Dubai Kennel and Cattery - http://www.dkc.ae/ they have a wealth of information to make a start.. We used them for the Dubai side of things, our UK vet was very au fait with the process so we were able to just arrange the shipping from that side quite easily, I can only speak with UK experience but there are several companies that can arrange the shipment of animals. @emm9 - the admin team are working out of Gems Wellington International on the SZR, opposite Mall of the Emirates, but I think they're working a short day until 1.00pm, we have secured a place in year 9 for our son and we went there to do all the paperwork and payments etc. Hope this helps

yes, had considered giving this job to DS to do in the school hols for some pocket money ... but I need them doing this holiday and not by 2013! If I were in the UK there would be a laudrette that could cope but can't find one here in Dubai!

we're at The Villa and we have two boxes, one for the water (a clock on a blue pump thingy) and a regular electricity meter (looks like the UK one) in a separate box on the opposite wall in the garden. Don't know if that helps you ....

quick update E101 goes AD bus station to Ibn Battuta - dep AD 0800, 0930 and 1100 then next buses are 1730, 1900 and 2000 E100 goes AD bus station to Al Ghubaiba (near Carefour nr Gold Souk) dep 0800 every 15 mins until 1015 then from 1400 every 15 mins until 2200 (I think!). Fare is 20dhs

Sorry to mislead (it's been a long week!) .. I was being facetious as there was a big thread on CB this week and the rights to claim etc. I believe the rules on CB are being changed and unless you are ordinarily resident (ie not with a residency visa in the UAE) you should not be allowed to claim, again sorry to mislead, and to go off thread!

as the article says most expats won't be affected: "The majority of expats are likely to remain unaffected by the changes unless they spend more than 90 days in the UK a year" I believe that's working days, well that's how I read it .... anyhoo if they are in the UK for 90 days they can then legally claim child benefit ... oops that was a separate thread!

we had a mega one 4,500aed in April, got it down to 1,200 in May and just paid 1,550 for April, we're in 4 bed with pool and garden. The majority of the bill is electric (which surprised me with the pool and garden). We're also keeping an eye on the meter, are disputing the April whopper with Dewa .... ETA trying to switch more things off, we're generally really good, minimal ac during day, 2 units upstairs on at night and trying to switch things off standby, thankfully DS doesn't shower very often so we can't blame him! edited by cymraes on 05/07/2011 <em>edited by cymraes on 05/07/2011</em>

yep I can also confirm candles do not travel well, still scraping mine off the other items that were packed in same box lol:) It's a wonder I didn't get done for obscene items with some of the weird shapes my candles turned into!! Another thing that didn't travel well were lampshades, guess it was all the shifting of stuff and the boxes when on the high seas. I did bring toiletries but not foodstuffs, packers said it wasn't a good idea, plus no corrosive materials (ie oven cleaner etc ... not that I'm big on cleaning the oven!) and they would only pack things that were unopened, so no half used shampoos etc!

The heat in those containers is incredible all my candles melted into one big glob! Plus our container took 4 weeks to ship then stood at jebel ali for nearly two weeks to clear customs.

we've split the tables before to use the vouchers - at Seafire at Atlantis, two tables and two separate bills 5 vouchers per table ie 10 people per table ... they were fine once we explained what we wanted to do. Good luck!
