I would give KDHA a call. If the fees are going up in September then I know you can def get refund but not sure otherwise but KDHA will advise. It's KHDA, in case you want to google it :-)

At our school it states on the paperwork that the deposit is not refundable. I know one family who got a refund as they moved out of the UAE. I guess lots look at it as people holding too many potential places, and if they refunded people would just hold multiple places everywhere as they would know they'd get the deposits back

Hi the souvenir shop in MOE opposite Crate and Barrel, I got some there, and a lovely silver camel one and they were cheap! the little shopping carts downstairs in Dubai Mall also have them in the corridor between Hallmark and Waitrose

In our sch Gems WSO there are intervention groups for gifted and talented in FS2 classes in maths for sure - I'd suggest speaking to schools directly to find out what they offer

We're in an A1 averaging about 1,300 last few months - expect 2,000 or so from June-Sept - 3 of us and we're pretty frugal with the AC etc

Hi we are in The Villa, ours is the smallest type (A1 Mazaya) which are currently going for 160-180,000 - we have 4 beds, with maids and study/driver downstairs. I know of someone in a B2 who paid 220,000 which seems to be average, I think they have 4/5 bedrooms, but it's not in a developed area and I don't think the garden was done either. Personally I don't think any of the gardens are large - well not like similar sized properties in Arabian Ranches. There aren't many being advertised on the properties themselves, but it may be worth a look around. Dubizzle is a good place to start. A lot of the larger properties don't have pools as standard unless the LL has put one in. The Mazaya As, Bs and Cs (the blocky square ones I think) have pools as standard. There are a lot of new C types (I think they're called) in Centro, but his is the most undeveloped, and I don't know who is renting/selling them. Why not call into the Management Office which is in Centro (it's sign posted) I think it's in Courtyard 7. Good luck!

You may want to contact DESC in Academic City who do A levels, I don't know if they do AS levels. Wellington Academy is very close to that for your son but I heard that they are now on wait list for each year group. For AS you may also try to enquire at Dubai college. DBS is quite a trek from The Villa. Getting a place at any school now for September will be a challenge, that unfortunately is Dubai. Good luck with your move

I've got lots of recipes that I've saved in 'word' over years. Now I'dlike to compile my own recipe book, I don't need recipe ideas just somewhere to store them in an organised manner - even better if it's an app I can keep on the iCloud ... Any ideas? Are you planning to publish the book or is it just for our own ease of use? I've got loads of recipes in word but most often use the relies I've stuck in clear plastic sleeves- how old fashioned is that:-) Oh that's me too! I'd like somewhere electronically to store them, plus if I can put on the cloud I can access here, in the UK when visiting and share easily. Pish posh will look up your programme but don't have an iMac ....

drop your cv into school receptions and say you want to do supply .... Some schools pay more than 400 which are not JESS.... What's your speciality are you OP, PE or do you teach any other subject/KS?

Hi A1984 ... if you don't have insurance in Dubai do you have insurance to cover you in the UK for the delivery, or going private? I could be completely wrong and you are non resident in Dubai (ie don't have a residency visa here) ... just worried about your situation. I knew someone who had a friend who delivered early on an aircraft (I seem to recall 30 weeks) and the plane was diverted to another country where she delivered - but her insurance did cover it. GEMS schools all the way - DS in year 10, wish we'd known in 2009 when we arrived he's had such a better education! He wasted 2 years at a non profit premium school who couldn't (ie wouldn't) help? Did you pay for 1 on 1 support at the non profit premium school too, yet get no support? No it wasn't an option for us, and we didn't pay - but would have!

Cymraes I did not mean to make an issue of it purely to point out you now pay for extra help which could not previously be achieved so you cannot really compare the schools. One question, if you do not mind me asking, did previous school know of the diagnosis when you enrolled and if so how did they propose you went forward? To clarify, yes they knew of his diagnosis and we gave them all the reports (there is a caveat in the application pack that if you don't disclose your place can be withdrawn) and they happily accepted him saying they would help ..... this school has had a new head since (2 years) and things I hear are better there now. Only one year in did the previous school said once he'd been there a year they could not offer additional support at all (no free help or no paid help).

Yes we do pay an additional 45,000aed for learning support and I have never made a secret of it - I had not put it on this post but will always add this caveat now going forward. Just to clarify I believe GEMS schools only ask you to pay when your child needs continuous 1-1 support, if a child needs minimal support or a boost then there is no cost involved. My DS does need 1-1 support and without it would not be able to attend school in Dubai, and we would have to return to our home country when support for his difficulties (which are not severe - high functioning autism) would not be supported as he wouldn't qualify as he's not classic 'special needs'. The non-profit school he attended in Dubai previously made it quite clear they could/would not support. I am a happy and grateful parent, whose child's needs are being met and he is doing well and achieving, something we could not have dreamed of 4 years ago. As it is now I pay 650 per week for 3 one hour lessons for an external special teacher to come into school so 45,000 for full time one to one care seems reasonable. I don't think he will need much more than what he is getting now, but who knows....that's a few years away. my son has I think 80% support fulltime 1-1 is I think 65,000 at our school - he doesn't have support for some lessons that he seems to cope well with - he's 15 so has built up some coping strategies

DH's company paid or a 33cu meter container we stuffed to to the gills glad we did, feels like home - we're a bit beyond the Ikea thing at our age and nicer (John Lewis type furniture) is hard to find. Would bring lots of clothes and everything you use regularity especially kitchen stuff. Sock up on M&S staples - pants, underwear, swimwear etc. In my experience most things are more expensive - but getting a few Arabic/Dubai things can make a home x <em>edited by cymraes on 04/05/2013</em>

Unless you are officially resident (ie permanently resident in the UK) you will have to pay ... Hence why NHS is stretched to the limits ... And my tax paying parents get the rough end of the stick .... if You're not resident and paying NI and paying tax you're not entitled! sorry to hijack, read the link for the FAQ - has anyone got any experience on changing a child passport to and adult one? DS' passport runs out next year and he will then need to switch to an adult one. Just wondered if I have to go back to the UK to do this as I understand there could be an interview - if so will need to think about when to do the trip before his passport runs out. Any experiences?

We have just discovered that DH's father has come to us with no medical insurance!!!! DH is apopleptic to say the least, what do we do if something happens? He's just told us he's got bad toothache and is not generally in the best of health. He told DH he had it all sorted, DH is livid to say the very least ..... Afternoon all, have booked a table at The Vault this evening, taking FinL ... anyone been? Wondered what it was really like - is it a bit swish (not sure if we want too swish!) we were going to go to The Observatory at the Marina but fancied a change. All feedback welcomed. Any ideas what the food's like, bar food or full blown dinner .... nothing much on Time Out or on the hotel website.

Normally your company will give you a budget, then you have something to work with when choosing an area, and the type of acconmmodation - within areas budgets fluctuate massively depending on the actual location, quality of accommodation and facilities within the building eg you could pay 100k for one 2 bed apartment and 180k for a 2 bed apartment which are very close to each other ... Do you have a rough budget? We can then advise on what you can get for your budget in each area - people are very open about their housing budget

That's a shame about spectrum on one ... We had a private room the last time and the food was excellent! We have very special friends coming for a special birthday in May ... Where would you suggest? We have 3 teenagers so need to figure that in cost wise! We liked Imperium too, but prefer having a bit if everything rather than ordering off the menu. Sorry Dxbrun for hijacking your thread!

First couple of times was much better it was a carvery style you could have a bit of everything but the format has recently changed to ordering the mains off a menu, portions were really small and took a LONG time to arrive (an hour!) we were disappointed after having such a fab time the two previous times before, however the drink selection is fab and free flowing - we're gong back to Spectrum on One next time edited by cymraes on 30/03/2013 Oh that's such a shame as we went before Christmas and it was lovely, food was great and a really nice atmosphere. Hubby and I went to Spectrum recently and we were really disappointed, food not great and it was a meat market full of very drunk desperate singles.

Even prices vary from agent to agent! So if I know what people are actually paying its a better indication of what we can negotiate. Also, if the estate agents are anything like estate agents in the rest of the world they will tell you wonderful things about an area- only to find its dead and nobody wants to live there! (You can tell I'm not a big fan right!) which area do you live in? We're up at The Villa, and we love it, although rents are rising fast and we've just renewed for another year (this will be our third at The Villa) prior to that we were in a town house at Arabian Ranches for two years, much smaller and not much cheaper there the one we lived in at Ranches is now up for 140,000, but the community is lovely. My child goes to GEMS Wellington DSO - he's 15 and in Year 10 - 64,000 a year - this is the school website for the prices, if you wanted to check, I think they have places (not FS and I think there is a wait for Year 1) http://www.gemswellingtonacademy-dso.com/contents.php?pageid=337&parentid=87 If your DH's company can pay all your school fees you're very lucky, my DH's only pay 30,000 and we have to fund the rest. My son was diagnosed as high functioning autistic, we have him in his second year (year 10) at GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis and he is currently studying for his GCSEs. He has additional support from the Achievement Centre team (about 70% if I remember rightly) and we pay an additional 45,000AED for this on top of the regular school fees - he has achieved well beyond our expectations. I understand most GEMS schools can offer additional paid support, but this depends on whether they can get a suitable shadow for them - Try contacting GEMS schools. They are very inclusive for special needs children, and I know that his school support many children in this way, and allow them into mainstream school. There is a lot of bashing of GEMS schools, but in our experience this is the best education that our son has ever received.

as I posted on a previous thread - we have used and about 8 of our friends have used them with no issues, totally happy to recommend Supreme Way 04 320 5195, Alex. Very good service at a reasonable price. We did a short move Ranches to The Villa, and our friends moved within The Villa. A friend used them recently and they were excellent, they even put her birthday cards back up!
