Sounds like RuthM does not have experience of the senior schools here in Dubai, several comments are completely unsubstantiated. In my experience my kids who were at a good independent, selective day school in the UK and moved here in years 7 & 10 have achieved exactly the results I would have expected had they stayed in the UK and are now at the same universities and on the same courses as their UK contempories. The biggest difference is that they have gained a non judgmental view of people and find it much easier to socialise across the board than those who went to 'Clarendon' schools. Just do your research on the schools here, you need to visit them to see which suits your children best. I think it is a fantatastic place to be educated. HTH

Thank you for your answers everyone, I located the golf house superstore on SZR and they had a great selection of kit and just looking at bag prices they were better than at other shops, however they had limited golf shoes and clothing. Decathlon had a reasonable range of both found some nice very well priced clothing the bags were a little more the GH. Also found a golf department in the upstairs Sun and Sand at MCC where they had a better range of 'plainer' clothing - Nike etc and the best value golf shoes. Hope this is helpful for anyone else on a similar mission! BTW Dragon I think you mean the golf dept at Studio R outlet mall has relocated to GH SZR as they are part of the same group. Sports direct upstairs in the outlet mall still has a small golf section.

Looking for equipment and clothing but not keen on selection or price of golf house. Have you tried the huge Golf House in Al Quoz? You won't find anywhere else in Dubai with a bigger selection than that. No, can you give me directions?

Ibn Battuta and Oasis do - also the one by Magrudys Jumeirah used to but haven't been there in ages. no oasis and the old sports market no longer do golf nor does studio R at the outlet mall. Looking for equipment and clothing but not keen on selection or price of golf house. Decathlon is a great idea, I'll try there. Many thanks. edited by daffers on 20/11/2012

thanks for the info. Nowhere as convenient as launching from the fishing villages. If they do enforce this it is going to be a complete nightmare for many people, locals included.

As close to Jumeirah as possible. Which ones are a quarter full and likely to negotiate? We do not need all the extras or cost that come with the likes of DIMC and dubai marina. TIA Oh and trailer parking would be a bonus ;) edited by daffers on 02/10/2012

There are plenty of available berths in marinas in Dubai. Some marinas aren't even a quarter full. Amelia, can you let me know which ones have spaces. Many thanks.

not majority, but if you have a wet berth then you do not need a trailer, and if you can afford wet berthing, then you can afford to buy a trailer on the rare occasion that your boat might want to come out...... A buy new trailer twice a year or more :( not in this house.

sorry Daffers, I cannot find the links, but the Gulf News ran various stories on this when it broke a few years ago. As a boat owner, I can say that it is on the registration paper work, berthing must be in a legally allocated place (sailing club or other such place). And the trailer?

Abu DHabi - http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/owners-of-illegally-parked-boats-given-ultimatum Saw this but relates to commercial trailers, even with a mooring you have to park the trailer somewhere. They are putting notices on boats and trailers in Umm suqeim notifying owners they have one week to move offending boat and/or trailer or the RTA will impound them! Another well thought out move!

Has anyone heard about the new rule outlawing the parking of boats and trailers outside of villas. RTA have referred me to the parking department in Rashidya who apparently have no phone number. Just wondering if anyone knows the actual ruling and whether or not one can park on random sand patches or whether they have built some boat parks I am unaware of ;). TIA

Out of interest, were they able to claim home status or were they regarded as expats? Yes we got home status, as again did many of his contempories, in our experience each university has different criteria, some did not ask for supporting documentation, others did. We have a property in the UK (rented) which we used for correspondence. HTH edited by daffers on 17/09/2012

I went to Fafa Salon in Sunset Mall Jumeirah Beach Road and they have promotion of like AED 69 of Gellish for both mani and pedi. and I finished in less than 1 hour. Good value and I like the salon. But i think their next booking is next week. I don't think they do Gelish as in the Harmony brand they have shellac or the Opi version of gel which I found went on very thick coats?

Ditto simpelasabc re your son settling in, there is alot of change at sixth form out here as some schools offer IB after GCSEs and others A levels. You need to act very quickly as our school for one is making 6th form offers to external sudents at the end of next week. To narrow it down a little for you, some of the schools offering IB include JESS AR, Repton, Wellington International School and Deira International School. Some of those offering A levels include Dubai College, English College, DESC, Jumeirah College (and DBS I think). I'm sure others will be able to add to both lists. The year groups here tend to have a wider range of ages due to kids moving or coming from schools in a different hemisphere, so he shouldn't worry about that. HTH

The home plugs run through your electrical circuit so a weak signal from the router does not matter since one home plug is wired to the router. Best way IMHO to increase network coverage. We had a similar problem our walls have metal mesh inside it is very bad for wireless. The home plug goes into your wall electrical socket (you must plug it in directly not via an extension lead). So in effect you have the router sending wireless signals through the room and into the home plug it is wired to (using cat5). The second home plug is where ever you need internet access. Again it must be plugged directly into an electrical socket. The home plug is either wireless or wired i.e you can attach a cat5 cable between the home plug and your PC et voila! (if wireless home plug- see instruction in my first post). One potential problem with this system is that many villas here have 2 or more electrical cicuits (ie one for ground, one for 1st floor) in which case you would only be able to extend the signal on the ground or the first floor not between the two.

Are you sure it's not thrush! In the UK I was prescribed Canestan HC cream when my babies had the type of rash you describe. It maybe worth checking back with your doctor and treating yourself for thrush too.

Most of the sbs are grammars which are highly selective and competitive to get into, which might not suit your child's needs. 10 out of 38 not the majority by any means. ;)

Mmm! Doesnt fill me with confidence. Have a consultant from a regular 'expat' hospital who also consults there and tells me the equipment required for a procedure is available at IH not the one we see her at. I'm feeling uncomfortable with the prospect unless anyone can convince me otherwise?
