Not acceptable at all, I'd be livid. It's up to the airline to decide how much recline you get, not the passenger sitting behind you. Fly business or put up with the discomforts of cattle class, reclined seats and all.

It sounds so much nicer now In my day it was sandwiches with [b'>Shipam Paste[/b'> ( Usually beef or salmon) Egg and cress Peanut putter A packet of crisps, a wagon wheel or club and a yoghurt Todays lunches are far nicer. I wonder if that is what my husband refers to as potted dog? He's from oop north. Children's lunchboxes now are flasher than adult's dinner parties used to be when I was a child! Crudites and dip, the height of sophistication back in the day.

Guns *can* misfire or the safety can disengage in even the most trained hands, true. Guns *can* recoil in an unexpected fashion as we saw here, in dubious hands. But statistically speaking, intentional harm via guns (people killing people) accounts for far more deaths than accidents. In fact, both poison and motor vehicle accidents kill more people--and children--than firearm deaths (accidental and intentional). Not trying to stir the pot, it's just the facts. Via CDC in case anyone is wondering if this is just propaganda I am regurgitating. It's easy to break it down to statistics but if I had a loved one die due to a firearm accident I don't think I'd take much comfort from the fact that more people die from poison or motor accidents, it's a moot point. Putting an automatic weapon in the arms of a nine year old is an utterly ludicrous thing to do and as a result another child(ren) have lost their father. It is just so needless and preventable.

Absolutely horrific. I also have no idea why gun ranges outside of law enforcement and military training use human silhouette targets, it's just so wrong. There are failings on so many levels, obviously starting with the parents but why on earth would it even be legal for a nine year old to pop in to a place called 'Burgers and Bullets' and be allowed to shoot any weapon, let alone an Uzi.

One has to think that in order for another human to run they must have been in a pretty poor mental frame of mind and rather unhappy. To the OP i would text your maid and ask her to come and sit and talk the whole thing through. One has to consider that poor communication as a major factor that could possibly lead to such events? edited by Lolacat on 27/08/2014 Not always LC. I know two maids with fair employers who seemed perfectly happy in their jobs until they unexpectedly ran off with a boyfriend in some grand romantic gesture. It's not an uncommon scenario and certainly not exclusive to maids and Dubai, woman do it the world over. Brits and Turkish waiters whom they met on holiday spring to mind. Heat of the moment, thinking with their heart, not their head, life derailed.

Mesho, you will be fine! You did well the first time around to only be out of this world for four months, baby number two will be even easier (hopefully ;) ). Of course you'll have days when you are so tired you could sleep on your feet and you'll wonder if you will ever get to sleep through the night again but you'll get through it and it's so worth it. <em>edited by Daza on 25/08/2014</em>

That's really interesting. When I was new here I didn't know anywhere else to go, not near any hospital, etc. so I brought my kid in to the govt clinic a couple times without charge as well. I thought they were going to bill me later, but they never did. Yep, they seem to be really good like that. My first visit to the government clinic she suggested I didn't register until later but gave me a long appointment, including scan and didn't charge me a single fils.

Oh gosh no way FairyDust H&P are just awful, I agree with the below! Too young for the audience I think listening to Dubai 92. I am now listening to Daisy & Kenny Show on Radio 2 - they kick the bum out of anyone on Dubai 92, except maybe Natalie. Natalie is fabulous! Really like listening to her, she's obviously in to music, she has a lovely voice and a really nice friendly style. She's my fav on 92.

Just to mention, it's also worth considering the cost if things don't go to plan and you need extra care. I was with Latifa in case of early delivery due to complications. The doctor at the government clinic did a few extra things not normally included in the package that she didn't charge for, I can't imagine a private hospital doing that.

The ante natal package at Latifa may not include as many scans and appointments as at private hospitals but it is certainly sufficient. Unless there are problems there really isn't the need for all the scans that are done in the private system. Nice if you like looking at pictures of your baby but certainly not worth breaking a strict budget for. My last baby I did both the Latifa ante natal package and with my private OB. The government clinic care was excellent. I found the waiting times for appointments frustrating but can't fault the medical care I received - and that is what counts.

Hi Mesho I know it can be daunting when you are expecting your second baby but to be totally honest, two children are not as difficult as you might fear and you certainly don't need a nanny. My first child was nearly two when my second was born and it took a couple of months to find my feet and get used to the new dynamic but it really wasn't that bad. In many ways it's easier when you have your second baby, you know what you are doing more and have more confidence. I made a book for my toddler called 'The New Baby'. It had a story and pictures of the hospital I was going to have the baby, what would happen there, what my toddler would do when I was there and what would happen when we got home, where the baby would sleep etc. I found it really helped. I found the biggest challenge was remaining patient with my toddler when I was exhausted. I've always found that toddler jealousy kicks in a few weeks after the birth and they realise that the new baby is here to stay. As you spend a lot of time with your new baby in your arms try to give your toddler cuddles whenever you get the chance. If you put your newborn in a sling your arms will be free for cuddles, puzzles, whatever with your toddler. Read to your toddler while you are feeding your newborn, it's good for both of them. I certainly wouldn't send my toddler off to full time nursery just because a new baby has arrived. It is a very long day for a toddler and if you work you do what you have to do but if you are home it makes absolutely no sense to send your toddler off all day. Watching the sibling bond grow is a wonderful thing and interaction between your children is good thing and should be encouraged. Give it time and they will be entertaining each other while you put your feet up :) Tell your husband how you are feeling and have him help where you can get him too. Encourage him to take your baby in the evening so you can get some rest. If you can afford to have a cleaner in once a week or send out the ironing then do that. Otherwise tell your husband that he will need to help out and if he won't then not to complain if things are not done like they used to be. I'm really glad I didn't have a maid when my first two children were little. It meant I had to learn how to cope on my own and it was so empowering when I realised that I could do it. <em>edited by Daza on 25/08/2014</em>

The easiset option might be to get a full time live in agency maid. They are sponsored by the agency but live with you. It means you won't need to go through the hassle of sponsoring a maid. There was a thread on here with details of an agency that does it but I can't find it - hopefully one of the other ladies knows. Alternatively you could just sponsor a maid for a year and let her go early.

xN, it's not a problem choosing to have a c-section here, people do it all the time and are able to get covered by insurance. When you are choosing your obstetrician you can talk through the options with them and decide if you agree on the best approach :)

I had one baby on the NHS in London and 3 babies in the American Hospital here. I far preferred the experience here, I felt much more in control and my wishes were listened to. Which is to be expected when you are paying for it rather than getting it for free :) If you want a natural birth there are many pro natural birth doctors in Dubai, just do a search on here. You can also elect to have a c-section far easier here than on the NHS. Regardless of what the system is like in my home country, I would never choose to fly home to have a baby unless I absolutely had to for citizenship reasons. Travelling when pregnant can be difficult, babies can be unpredictable which could mean my husband could miss it, I'd much rather be in my own home post birth than someone else's and I'd rather not take a very young baby on a plane. It really does depend on your personal circumstances. By all means going home to have a baby because you'd like to have family around etc is a good reason but if you are thinking of going simply because you are nervous of the health system here then stop worrying, it's very good.

Sadly I think tupperware consultants and parties went out in the early '90's. As you can buy them all from supermarkets now. Maybe you want to consider becoming an Avon Lady instead? Tupperware parties are still going strong in Australia and NZ! Mullets and soft rock are still pretty big too, we're good at holding on to classics.

I wonder if anyone on here will fess up leaving totally inappropriate things for their maid to see? My most embarrassing maid moment was shortly after our first full time maid started. She brought my ringing phone upstairs to give to me just as I walked out of my bathroom starkers after having a shower. She didn't bat an eyelid while I screamed in horror and bolted back in to bathroom.

Thanks all! I will definitely check out Arabian Ranches, sounds lovely! As for the health insurance, on double checking it's actually more like 800AED per month (amounts are all listed in USD and my mental currency conversion is shocking), I don't know what other people receive/pay but to me, paying that amount for full coverage including vision and dental doesn't seem like a lot at all? Especially seeing as everything else is paid anyway. The only thing to consider that if for some reason you make a lot of claims on you health insurance then the cost of it might shoot up the following year. Has your husband asked about his company covering the whole family? It seems a little odd that they aren't, he is clearly on a family package and the norm (as far as I am aware) would be for coverage for the whole family.

I live in Arabian Ranches and love it. It is handy to both Nord Anglia and Al Quoz. It has great community pools, tennis courts, skate ramp, two licensed restaurants at the Golf Club and a shopping center with supermarket, restaurants, Costa, fast food, book shop etc. It's an established community with a really nice feel and there are a lot of families here. You might be able to get a three bed + study in Al Reem for your budget. http://www.househuntersdubai.com/index.php?m=search&web=1&act=details_property&id=5099

Cherpie, just wondering why you would worry about sensitivity from coconut oil? It's completely natural with nothing added. I much prefer putting plain oil on my baby's skin than a product with an ingredients list a mile long. Obviously in your baby's case he had a problem diagnosed so specialist products may have been needed but unless there is a professionally diagnosed problem then I don't understand why people load their baby's delicate skin with so many products. Skin is a living organ, why unnecessarily use soaps, powders and creams on it when it's really not needed? My general rule when my babies are young is if I wouldn't eat it I wouldn't put it on their skin. Don't get me started on baby wipes....... :D

I thought that was taking it a bit too far as well. I would rather go without bronzer (which I do almost always anyway). It is the plastic waste that is annoying me most. At The Change Initiative you can refill Ecover bottles. They have clothes washing liquid and dish washing liquid. One of my friends had a water filter system installed in her home. It means they can drink the tap water which saves a lot of wastage on plastic bottles. She is really happy with it, I think this is the one she got: http://www.aquapureuae.com/index.html

Aveeno's US facebook page gives this number for the region: 00971 4 4297377 Alternatively, have you tried just using coconut oil? I find coconut oil the best as it is one of the closest oils to the skin's natural sebum. Massage it in all over or just where needed. Jojoba oil is also very good but coconut oil is much easier to find here. Are you using any soaps, foams or cleansers on your baby in the bath? If so, stop using them as they can be very drying on delicate young skin. At nine weeks all your baby needs to be washed with is water. Getting a water filter may also help, I use H20 Pure Blue filters in our bathrooms and find they make a big difference. If you are bathing your baby everyday bathing less frequently may help.

As far as I know the only fresh organic milk available here is organilicious which at around AED 20 a bottle is probably out of most families' price range... edited by Tattie Bogle on 17/08/2014 It's not necessarily the 'best' option either. I'm normally a big advocate of supporting local produce but milk from cows on a predominantly grass based diet is far better nutritionally (and for other reasons) than a from a predominantly grain based diet. So I buy imported organic milk from grass fed cows (Yeo Valley). Very much a personal choice thing and there are also good reasons for supporting local initiatives. Sorry to digress OP :)

UHT is fine nutritionally so if it works better for you there is no reason not to use it. You are right to switch back to full fat, at 18 months it's the best option.

Second vote for Greenheart. They grow most of their produce locally so they don't have a great range at present, obviously growing conditions aren't great. I'm still managing to get most of my fruit/vegetable shop there though, it's just a bit more limited. They have a partner farm in Lebanon which they have some things in from - the peaches and nectarines are delicious. When the weather cools down a bit and the growing season starts you won't find fresher more delicious vegetables for sale anywhere. I get practically giddy with joy walking in to their shop some days :)

Can anyone give any shop names which sell children's shoes? Just bought school uniform (ouch!), next it's the school shoes! Pablosky and Clarkes are both shop names, not just a brand. Ecco is also good. Department stores like M&S and Debenhams sell children's shoes. There are a few shops like Shoe Citi and Payless that sell a wide range of different brands.

We normally get Adidas trainers.

That's interesting, Apricot. Glad you have had success using this route. But different families have different requirements. Some (esp westerners) would rather employ someone with Dubai experience. This is because she would know her way around and would already have a support network here. Personally, I would favour an older woman who has worked for a European expat family and has friends based locally. This type of helper may have higher demands salary-wise but would be less likely to be dependent on her employer for social interaction. She would *probably* also understand our culture and be less inclined to keep testing boundaries (e.g. by constantly asking for things). I'm no expert on maid issues but once I do hire someone full time (e.g. when I return to work) I will most likely go down that route. Maybe I'm just a softie (!!) but I would find it hard emotionally to have someone totally dependent on me. I'm with Apricot. Sorry WhiteOrchid, chances are an older experienced maid will know every trick in the book and eat a softie new employer for breakfast. You won't even know you are being manipulated until one day you find yourself slicing mangos while she puts her feet up :D
